I feel you're being too hard on yourself. Comparing yourself to a group of men who didn't bother with much of the daily care and maintenance of their family and home (if any) is unrealistic. You're also assuming they (or whoever reported those statistics) were being honest about the EVERY day part. Which I just don't believe. At least not until it's become a routine over YEARS (more than 3). I really don't believe Hemingway methodically counted how many words he put down daily or consistently wrote the same every day. Even if he did - it didn't end well. It's not a sustainable goal to put this goal of yours over the other priorities in your life right now. Choose the extra minutes of baby cuddles while you can. Please give yourself a break.

In Steven King's autobiography (which I heartily recommend) he discusses how for several years he wrote under the influence of drugs, amphetamines I think.

Amphetamines would be really similar to the beat poets, but it's kind of eerie because he came from being a teacher as well.

Writing isn't for everyone. But folks with a social presence think they have something to say... But writing is a skill, and is hard!! We aren't born with it. In any case the 1000 words a day is analogous to YOUR goal, and the truth of productivity is you can easily be doing 'the thing', but are actually getting nowhere. So again is a mindful activity, you are cheating yourself if you just phone it in. The second truth is you need to be aiming towards something, and that applies to clutter as much as writing a master work. It's just that clutter is fighting back, like a leaky bucket. All that said, Mia probably IS one of those people who can write a successful book...

I find ridiculously small goals, and the willingness to write badly manages to get me over my overwhelm and perfection, and gets me on track. Sure, I initially feel like I am phoning it in, but most of my writing happens in the back of my brain between sessions, so once I start to show up regularly (I use NaNoWriMo a lot) actual writing starts to happen. Sometimes just opening a document and listing bullet points is enough to get things simmering. I would love to write in all -night frenzied spurts like I did in my youth, but slow and steady works for me now. I managed to empty a 5x15 storage locker (halving my possessions) in the same way this year, and it was very much the same thing...clear one box, and then let the mental tetris kick in in the back of my brain. YMMV.

I’m thinking that you might enjoy actually reading one of his books. He started out with one desk at the end of a hallway so there was really no clutter at all to distract him from those 1,000 words. Shutting off distractions and doing some deep work is how he succeeds.

@MiaDanielle Some productivity advice for cis men (particularly the do x the same every day) is not going to be as directly effective for someone who is not a cis man, such as a cis woman who has a MONTHLY hormone cycle instead of a cis male DAILY hormone cycle. It’s okay for people’s productivity to look different.

Ha ha. I prob write thousands of words daily just pondering, journaling, writing on abuse recovery realizations, getting in touch with my feelings and so on. I don’t think I would be sane at all if I couldn’t write many things down every single day. The habit started in the throes of recovering from narcissistic abuse (which was about a decade ago) and has by now just become a daily part of my life and habits. It’s a good thing Imo Bcuz it’s like a brain dump but for deep thoughts, intense feelings, etc. And also things like giving poison and toxicity and emotional pain and injury (past or present or both) an exit. Debunking deep seeded lies we believe. Etc. It helps me to “dump” such things onto paper (or the screen). It also helps me to sort them all out instead of being all jumbled up inside of my psyche. Anyone who has mental/emotional issues (big or small) Imo would benefit from such a practice. I highly recommend lol. I think a lot of people would be truly surprised at just how much goes on in our hearts and heads on a daily basis. And Bcuz such things tend to accumulate and get heavier and heavier to keep carrying around all the time. And can also eventually affect your physical health and ability to function. I love Stephen King. Gobbled up so many of his books back in the day. Ha ha. I would also think if anyone struggles to write, start with what you know, yourself/self discovery, or working through your own feelings. I would seriously doubt that there would be any shortage of words for such things. I talk/write to my screen like I’m sharing with my best friend. Lol. I often free write or just follow my stream of consciousness. I don’t have a “plan” per se. Writing is often like a winding trail. You just start where you are and follow where it leads. Then after you’re done, you then see where it took you. So the next time you just pick up where you left off or start a new path. No rules. No filters. No limits.

Habits….those are a nightmare struggle for me. I always try to make something a habit, but with my health issues I never know what my day will look like. There are days that I can’t do anything and there are days that I feel I can concur my whole house (just a figure of speaking because my energy is still rather low). So I keep a kind of to-do list with everything on it that needs to be done including decluttering certain areas and whatever is possible with my energy I will do things from this long list. If I have a very bad day not much is done or even nothing is done, but there are small tasks and bigger tasks on my to-do list so most of the time at least something is done. But still impossible to make something a habit.

I so understand where you’re coming from. I have a chronic illness which includes pain and lethargy daily. Like you some days I have energy but even those days it’s very little. Habits are great for those with predictable lives but all I can do is try. There are days where I’m pretty much in bed. I really push myself to get up and at least get some small tasks done on the other days. I think it was Jonathan Becker who said just make a list with three chores each day. Sometimes when you see so much to do you’re exhausted before you start. I’ve tried that but very rarely would I even accomplish those. I do have a running list but each task is small. I also will take breaks after each chore. I’m sorry that we have these health issues but at least we do what we can.

I don't know if you have any control over or are interested, but the ad KZfaq played before your video (that couldn't skip) was a horror film showing on Disney that had some graphic shots and doesn't align with your brand history at all. Possibly because you've mentioned Stephen King in this video, so the algirithms took over. I'm a bit disturbed that Disney think that's an ok ad to run to an unrestricted audience
