2 years ago I tried to clear JLPT N4 with only 5 months of Japanese learning experience, I ended up filming and editing this whole video of me doing the test but ended up with over 3 hours of footage. As a result, I wasn't very happy with the way the video turned out and never uploaded it.
This video exposes my skills back when I only had 5 months of experience and it shows how a little bit of luck and knowledge in the RIGHT areas of Japanese can allow you to pass the JLPT N4 despite not knowing what 80% of the questions actually mean.
Ever since then, the channel has just kinda moved on and I've gotten better at Japanese, uploading other more useful videos and not really ever recording myself doing JLPT ever again. I figured it's actually kinda hard to make an entertaining video out of someone sitting down and answering questions he doesn't understand...
HOWEVER, last week I went back to Australia for the first time in 2 years and found that this video was still sitting on my computer. I watched the whole thing back and... y'know what, I actually find it kinda entertaining! So I hope you guys enjoy it too and get to see the stark contrast in my Japanese abilities 5 months in compared to my Japanese abilities now! :D

I'm really glad you enjoyed it! . Honestly the main reason I didn't upload this 2 years ago was because I was really doubting whether I could turn "me sitting down answering questions I hardly understand for 2 hours" into an entertaining video. I bet watching yourself from back then now is pretty motivating. Progress seems slow day to day, but a couple years can be a big difference.

Yea, the whole point of making this channel and logging these things is to look back and see how I've improved. It's pretty crazy that I can basically answer all of these questions now, but I think what's even crazier is the questions that make me go "?" even today. . There were definitely a few on this test that I believe aren't appropriate for N4... like that question that expects you to know 初める is pronounced そめる not はじめる despite はじめまして being written as 初めまして.

hi Cheif, new subscriber here.. i just started to learn japanese from your video and cure dolly sensei may she rest in peace. right now im studying kana but i dont know what to do next, so do you have any sort of rough guideline of things to do in order? for example 1st step study kana, 2nd 2k vocab/kanji, 3rd textbook and so on. since im following cure dolly sensei lesson, which textbook for grammar, kanji, etc is best to use? is genki books suitable or do you have a recommendation?

Hi there! This video is your next move: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/esmJZban2JnMaIE.html . Avoid textbooks at all costs. There isn't a single one out there aimed for Japanese beginners that actually teaches you real Japanese structure like Cure Dolly does. Everything you see in a textbook will clash with Dolly and make things that are simple sound confusing. This is true for Tae Kim as well (specifically in regards to the fundamentals). . Oh and about "studying Kanji". I don't think anybody needs to study Kanji past knowing what radicals are. You don't even need to go learn a list of them. Just understand that that's how Kanji is built up. . The only reason anybody would want to study lists of kanji is if you plan on speedrunning the JLPT.

@@JouzuJuls i see thanks for clarifying, and also i have a few more question if you dont mind. 1st should i watch cure dolly video in order of oldest to newest or can i just watch her her "Lesson 1-90" videos and would that be enough? 2nd one of my goal is JLPT N3 within 3 years actually so i do want to study a fair bit of kanji, can i use Remembering the Kanji as a supplementary? since i heard that books are pretty well regarded

@@hilmanmaulana1565 You can watch the Dolly videos in order if you want, some people do that and they're fine. But I prefer just watching what I need to know. Like say I come across something I don't understand, I'll look up everything relevant to that thing. . N3 in 3 years is totally doable with a bit of kanji study. I speedran the N1 in basically 2 years and I did RTK. . Instead of using the RTK book, I just used the RTK anki deck. It took be about 1.5 years to go through and was probably the hardest thing to do. Most people that I've heard from say that they quit studying Japanese entirely because RTK is so tedious. . That being said, RTK is probably the most efficient way to get it done. You don't get much faster than 1.5 years for every single jouyou kanji. You just gotta really make sure you have it in your to get through the whole thing.

It has been 2 month since I started learning japanese, seeing you clear N4 in 5 month (back then) is very encouraging ! Also I am using your core deck with migaku from your link and I am making lots of progress... quick question, how many new cards should I see on the Core deck and on my personal mined deck per day to be the most efficient?

Wow! Congratulations on starting your journey, getting cracking with that core deck, AND getting Migaku! Very glad to have been able to provide those for you 😁 . As to your question of how many new cards you should see, there's no straight answer 🤔... . I remember being in your position, not really sure if I was doing too many cards or too few cards, but here's what I've worked out... there are basically 3 things to note: 1. Consistency is more important than motivation. Burnout is the no.1 enemy, this old video talks about how to preemptively combat burnout in language learning: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ptdjZLWo2d3Uk4E.html 2. Nobody says you have to do the same number of new cards every day. 3. The more cards you do, the more time it takes. So your max number is really based on how much time you have for basically the next few weeks. . If you have a busy schedule and find it hard to allocate time for study sometimes, watch this this video as it talks about "shouganai" factors (things you can't do anything about), and how you can do your best while working with them: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gKx7jKZi1bunaX0.html . I really believe that as a beginner, there are SO MANY different things to learn (grammar, vocab, kanji, etc.)... . It's really not worth trying to be ultra-efficient with the exact number of new cards you're doing. Some days you'll come across a certain grammar point that will drive you nuts, you might spend a whole day scratching your head over it. So on that day, maybe don't do so many new cards cuz you're already stressed and confused! . Other days you'll feel unstoppable, so why not do a few more (just know you'll have to review them the day after and you won't feel so unstoppable so... know your limits 😂)

@@JouzuJuls wow thank you, i just finished watching those vidéo and it had answers for lots of questions I had 😁 Yeah like you said, I am never sure if I am seeing too much or not enough new cards.. since consitency is the way, I'll try to vary the number each day depending on how I feel, keeping a minimum of 5 new words (10 cards hearing + reading) for now Every japanese learner speak about burning out at some point ... well I'll try not to ahah 😂 again, thanks for the advices!

The sentence 'このうえの3がいめです。' is obviously incorrect in Japanese. 'このうえの3かいです。' is the correct version.

Yea, it's really crazy to see the difference 2 years later. Rewatching this edit I constantly thought to myself like... "Man how did you pass without knowing this???" 😂 . I don't think I had even started RTK at that point...? . The exact day I started RTK was May 12 2021. Metadata for this video says it was recorded April 21 2021, so there ya go 😁 . Do you know if any of these is applicable for studying Chinese?

You mean the words and their meanings? Most of them probably not. . When you get to a higher level in Japanese and you're mainly learning 2 kanji nouns, then it starts to become more interchangeable since you're basically learning Chinese at that point. That being said, the same word can still have different meanings in both languages (like 老婆), and some words that are common in Japanese are not common in Chinese.

It's really a matter of priority, dedication, and working with available resources IMO. (Of course, method matters too but that's elementary) . I explain more about how I clock in 12 hours of immersion a day in this video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gKx7jKZi1bunaX0.html . But the gist of it is like... First of all you should never judge yourself based on how well you're performing compared to someone else. Everybody learns at a different pace and errbody got different shit to deal with 😂. No matter how good you are, there's always someone better- and no matter how shit you are, there's always someone shittier, that's the mindset I like to be on to remind myself to just focus on competing against myself 😁 . But second of all, I have the luxury of being able to basically dedicate 80% of those 5 months to studying Japanese. Even if you had a whole year, if you had to worry about school, work, and other life things- there's not really much you can do about that. So again, don't compare yourself like this, focus on what you can do given your current conditions! .
