I've purchased antique Japanese "geta skates (下駄スケート)"! These skate sandals were invented in Japan to make skating more affordable. Follow along my research about geta skates and how I try to skate in them for the first time.

Good job Billy! Way to do something scary and put yourself out there! It’s really cool to see kimono in recreational use. It’s a reminder that kimono were and are everyday clothes, not just something for special occasions

You're so brave, trying the geta skates! They looked like there's almost no support at all! I also loved your skating outfit. You brought spring to the ice. 🌸🌸🌸

You mentioned sharpening the blades, and I was about to suggest that! I remember using the sometimes terribly blunt rental skates at ice skating rinks, and they were just impossible to move in, but if you got them sharpened up, it made it a hundred times better. Thanks for another fascinating video!

In Holland we have friese doorlopers, skates from Friesland. You can bind them under your shoes.

When I was 5 in the Netherlands in the 50s I had wooden skates with a metal blade that strapped over my shoes like sandals. I still have my father's skates that were the same except that they have a cute curl up the front. You can see these if you look at Dutch paintings of the 18th and 19th century. But those geta skates look terrifying. You are very brave.

My dad had what was called snow skates something like that. Kind of like a small ski, curling in front, and strapped onto your regular shoes.

i absolutely love all the patterns and colours in your first outfit, when you went outside and tied the kimono up and we could see all the layers. and the way you could see a glimpse of the colourful lining on the sleeves on that first kimono is absolutely glorious.

Thank you for sharing. It's very interesting to know. I didn't know about the japanese way but in northern Belgium and The Nederlands kids had skating wooden clog 😃😃😃 My grandfather used to skate like this as a kid in the 20's. 😊 your oufits are all very beautiful and I looove your magenta haori. See you soon😘♥️

That was so interesting :-) For trying them on for the first time, I would count not getting hurt as a success! I hope you can find a way to get them to work for you. Did you have any additional padding in your tabi or something? It looks like it would be quite painful and cold in winter 🥶

I was surprised that Japan did not develop ice skates independent of the West (assuming I am understanding correctly). Clearly there are bodies of water which froze which one could skate on.

It's a really cool video, it's fascinating to see these historical objects in use! Also i really liked the way the kimono you were wearing from 13-17 min of the video looked like a dragon fruit. It's the deep pink and green triangles, and dotted nagajuban colar looking like the insides of the fruit! So pretty!

Yes, i even had the chance to buy some of the gets ice skates at the 2017 Denver cherry blossom festival! I didn't but maybe i should have! Lol I also tried ice skateing in kimono this weekend and it was scary, probably because it was fake ice, everyone pretty much agreed it's easier to skate on real ice.

The second pair the blades look like speed skates. Since speed skates have an upper more like a shoe than a boot it kinda makes sense. Find an amateur speed skater and see what they can do.

Even if the results were quite what you were hoping for, I still really enjoyed the video! I also thought it was cute when your husband appeared and asked how it was going ♥️ ♥️ I wonder if any of this older relatives ever got to use geta skates. Was it difficult finding geta skates in general, or just ones that were in your size? I know here in the US, it's not uncommon to find tie-on metal roller skates in antique shops.

Wow, when you first put them on I was terrified, thinking you are going to break an ankle😂 But at the end 😮👏🏽 Just awsome. Btw… Hi, my name is Alicia and I‘m from Munich. I started to watch your videos last year and you inspired me to get my own Kimono (Furisode to be exact). In July there will be a Japan Festival in Englischer Garten and I would love to put on my Furisode for that occasion. That‘s where I ask you 😅 Could you maybe make a video where you show how to tie the tateya musubi? I remember the video where you explained the different types of obi and when I saw that obi arrangement I imediatly fell in love with it❤ With best regards and looking foward for future videos😍👋🏽

The blades look more like Nordic skates, which aren't ground in a U-shape (or my grandpa's skates from the 1920s, which also aren't hollow-ground). I'm told that's better for natural (rough) ice than how hockey skates are ground, but I don't know. (I WANT a pair of Nordic skates, but I don't skate often enough to justify them. I fall down enough on the rink.)

You can sand blast the rust off. Take them to a professional skate sharpener. The next time you go. try to keep the blades under your feet parallel to each other. I see that you have the skate out like a V shape and not || under your feet. To know that you are skating correctly, is that you should feel the skate glide on the ice and not scrape. Hang on to the wall. Stand up straight in a marching position. Place the blades close to each other and parallel to each other and under your body. Then take one foot forward so that you can feel the blade glide over the ice. Return to the parallel position. Then repeat the same for the other foot. Repeat this over and over again until you feel that the blades are gliding over the ice. When you are comfortable with this then proceed to push off with one foot. glide with both feet on the ice until you stop. then push off with the other foot glide then repeat. I wish I was there to help you out. Try again with this knowledge and instruction.
@ragnkja
@ragnkja Жыл бұрын
If you’ve ever tried skating on anything other than figure skates, you know that you need to angle the rear foot to get any traction to kick. You can’t keep the feet parallel while skating, so the appropriate foot position is more like |/ or \|, and while gliding on just one skate you obviously keep that skate straight.
