Don't get off the backroads in Alabama! Or maybe, you should!
So in March of 2023, I took a major road trip throughout the deep south and a big part of the trip was criss-crossing throughout the great state of Alabama.
The goal was to get an up close look at how folks in Alabama live their lives. And the rule was - no highways. Cause you don’t get to know the real Alabama going 85, do you?
I’m gonna take you on a little journey. Together, we’re going to explore all kinds of Alabama. I think you’re going to learn a lot more about this state. I know I did.

My fiancee was going to move to Pollard and a friend lives in Wetumpka. I saw those areas and I really thought it was beautiful. Montgomery has nice old areas and Birmingham has a great remodeled downtown. I was ready to move there and excited about it. He ended up going to Nashville but I loved Alabama.

I've traveled all across this country so much I should've been a trucker. You can't find more a more down-to-earth willing to help you out spirit than the people in Alabama. I ended up there for a while by accident and I'm glad I did. The people there taught me a lot about what it means to be a human being. I wish I could be more specific online, but you can't talk bad to me about Alabama. I just won't hear it, one side or another. YMMV, but they all showed me acceptance and kindness, didn't matter what shape I was in (and I wasn't in a good situation at the time). I'll take that with me for life.

There's something about your videos that lightens my mood. You listen and intuitively encourage people to share their core values. Many of the people you talk with feel like a friend from my past when folks were down to earth and just themselves. Particularly in Arkansas and Alabama. Reassuring to see that the church is still important in the life of these small communities. Mappy's takes are on the mark and always make me smile ( and he always made me laugh out loud when he shot his gun out west). Anyway, thanks for making it possible for me to go along on this ride.

@NickJohnson it played a role. We lived in Hawai'i for six years, up until a certain event involving useless masks came along. We would watch your videos constantly. It reminded us, especially during that time, that there are places back on the mainland that weren't so restrictive of one's freedom the way Hawai'i was at the time. Ultimately, we moved here in 2022. We thoroughly enjoy your videos. Thank you for your excellent work.

I am in my late seventies raised on a farm outside Gadsden Ala. We plowed with a mule until I was in the 1st grade and upgraded to a Sears Bradly Davis walk behind, followed by a Ford 9n. I retired in East Oklahoma, and still garden every year. Container mostly now. LOL Loved the folks in Alabame, but had to leave for the draft back in 1966, and only return for weddigs and funerals. Still love to visit.

I've lived on both coasts and the Midwest. I've been to 5 continents and a dozen or so countries. I drove 3,500 miles west, with 3 cats and my wife in the car and 4 cats, plus wife, heading 3,500 miles back east. I'm "sub-rural". I mean, it's full of farms but also town shopping areas. Quiet and peaceful. Beautiful and full of wildlife. Sometimes deer scratch themselves on my house, and when the owls chat, the coyotes yip, because they can't reach the owls. Turkeys, beaver, bear, and all types of critters. Farm stores with milk from cows that I wave to on my commute. It is really wonderful. My house was named "Slice of Heaven" by a friend from the city, he's like a brother. I've known him since 1986. The joy on his face, from walking around my woods was heart warming. He is in the city, but he was raised in the suburbs. Everyone needs to get out and into nature. It's good for you.

Yesterday I heard “Sweet Home Alabama” on the radio and thought to myself, “Nick Johnson is the only reason I know what he means when he talks about Muscle Shoals.” From the Cowboy Church (do they dress like cowboys for church there?) to the fried apple pie (looks kinda like an apple fritter), you show us things in America that no one else does, and from convenience store workers to managers of tractor supply companies, you seek out people whose opinions are rarely shared elsewhere. I hope that people everywhere can get to understand each other better through your videos and grow as people. You’re truly doing God’s work here, Nick. Keep up the great work!

Next trip, visit Cheaha and Desoto State parks. Ft. Paine is nice too. Alabama is the end of the Appalachian Mountain chain and has some pretty waterfalls and mountain views!

Northern Alabama is gorgeous. Nice weather. Friendly people. We'd be living there right now if my wife's family wasn't in Wisconsin (we live in Iowa though).
