today I tried to shop zero waste at a normal supermarket, and show you what and wasn't possible. zero waste and low waste living are still quite inaccessible for the average person, but there are at least some helpful choices at today's supermarket.

I'm concerned that you conflate 'plastic free' with sustainable, they're different. Plastic is so prevalent because it does amazing things. The issue is that we now have a huge volume of it that has nowhere to go, and we are not responsible in how we handle materials, or even how we consume things! I'm in admiration of what you do but I would like to see more clarity in understanding product life cycles, supply chains, and a more holistic approach to the impact of our lives on the planet.

Thanks for another great video. Just so that people know, the plain Quaker oats (not the sachets) are loose in a box, and Lidl sell paper bags of oats too. I also buy loose bananas, and only ever buy the single ones for the same reason. I shop at Sainsbury's, and I usually end up having a limited range of vegetables and fruit, because a lot of them are plastic wrapped. The ketchup in the glass bottles works out much more expensive, but at least it has a paper label. The spices are all in glass jars with metal lids, but they have those awful plastic labels like the tomatoes. I have no idea why they started doing those - what is the point in making recyclable packaging, then sticking a plastic label on it?! It's very difficult to do a zero waste shop in a standard supermarket, but more power to you for going for it. Much love. Xx

These type of videos are really helpful for people who don't have bulk stores/eco-friendly shops in their countries/city. It's really hard to go zero waste/reduce waste for me because i live in a country that's not developped enough to have/sell eco-friendly products like bees wax wrappers, bamboo toothbrushes, solid shampoos...etc. So yeah, it is even harder for me to go less waste but i'm trying my best✌🏼️

I love your channel and this is a really great video!! Feel like something like this could have a genuine impact on supermarkets. The mylk thing especially drives me crazy!! It’s all tetra packs which arent recyclable in my area. And isn’t it frustrating that supermarkets here don’t do bulk items!! ??I feel like this is something I remember supermarkets doing when I was a kid, but now it’s only ever in super high end or specific zero waste shops that aren’t as widely available. UGH! Keep up the great work. ☺️🙏🏻

That would be very interesting! Most Lidls sell a small range of loose nuts, so last week I went to my local Lidl supermarket, and instead of using the plastic bags that they provide for the nuts, I took a (preweighd) jar and filled it up with the nuts. Once I got to the till, I asked the worker if he could just take the weight of the jar ( as labelled on it ) away from the overall weight on the scanner, but he said that the Lidl machines don't allow for that, to make it worse, he said he'd just put them in a plastic bag for me- which obviously defeats the entire purpose!😭 So Instead I had to put them all back. I was so annoyed- supermarkets aren't even doing the most basic of things for our environment!!💔🌱

Thank you for this video. I was watching Shelbizleee's one the other day and thinking to myself it would be nice to see sth like that in some British supermarkets cause I do think it is quite a challenge to do such shopping, especially if you don't have any zero-waste shops nearby. Would be cool to see other main supermarkets, e.g. tesco, asda or lidl. Btw, if someone's not a vegetarian, but still wants to limit the plastic consumption, Morrisons introduced this thing that you can bring your own container to their meat/fish corner and they'll pack your food there.

I’ve tried doing zero waste shopping and something that helped me in this journey is just changing the way I purchase food and finally growing my own food. In the past, folks would shop with a basket and pick up fruits/veggies, Proteins and specialty items. Rice beans porridge and pantry items are always bought in bulk to fill up the meal. Herbs and etc were grown in house to helped fill in the rest. I’ve found that shopping more at farmers market+ canning/growing your own food is the closest to this lifestyle and reduces a lot of waste.

Just a quick FYI - All bananas we eat in the UK come in by boat (at least, the ones from the Caribbean, which is where most of them come from) these boats are called reefers, and mostly arrive to portsmouth - they are then transported by lorry.

Ooooh, I like this series already! I shop at Waitrose, because I really find that with the loose veg that I buy I have more choice, and that there isn't a gigantic price difference between there and ASDA (which is the other shop in my town). I do have a wholefoods about half an hour away, that does pasta etc bulk without plastic, but I realised recently that Waitrose have started doing their red lentil pasta fully in recycled cardboard, without the annoying plastic window! YAY! And ASDA do the same with jasmine rice. So there are ways around it, if you are able to buy from different shops which lol takes time.

Only local produce there were English coxes apples so I bought some and a coconut obviously not local. Whilst I was washing the apples I found a sticker, from New Zealand, I was furious. To top it all when I opened my coconut it was bad!!! I may have well shopped at the supermarket. I’m growing quite a bit of my own veg at the moment only lettuce ready at the moment but soooooo fresh and tasty. Wish I could be self sufficient as it’s the only way to know what is fresh and organic. Thanks for all the great footage. Peace

The problem with the recycling labelling is that it's still not mandatory (in UK anyway), and they can choose whatever symbol style they like. The OPRL (on most supermarket branded stuff) is a good one to trust, but look out for the 'green dot' (often black) as this only means the company has paid an amount towards waste management (not necessarily recyclable)

SO HAPPY that i found your channel through Shelbizleee. Im from America, living in the UK now, and surprisingly have been finding it very hard to find package free/recyclable packaged goods. Back home my favorite afforable Grocery store was Foods Co. They had a bakery, deli, loose produce and Bulk dry goods in dispensers/barrels, My hometown often hosted a farmers Market every weekend. Now i live in a small village here (Barnsley). my nearest food shops are Aldi and Co-op which are a big disappointment when im trying to create less waste while also trying to maintain a balanced diet (currently pescatarian)! I enjoyed this video and curious to see how "zero-waste" food shopping could be achieved at ASDA or Tesco? Speaking of tesco, I just did an online food shop to trial buying low waste goods and was notified that they are trialing not using ANY plastic bags for online deliveries. Not a major fix, but a nice step in the right direction!

There is also a real problem where sometimes plastic is more sustainable, because it's lighter tot transport and keeps food fresh (and food is sooo resource intensively!). I would love to go zero waste but am really struggling time and money wise, because zero waste shops aren't very close to where I live/work and opening times are quite limited. I also struggle with carrying all the glass on my bike and driving there seems to defeat the purpose. Going to Sainsbury's is quite exhausting. So I just try and limit waste...

Funny to see Flahavan's Irish oats...they're grown and packaged just a few miles from me in County Waterford and what I have nearly every morning for breakfast :)

in sainsburys now you can take your own tubs in for meat and fish, and they sell a brand of sliced bread that is packaged in paper. i know its not zero waste but its better than before :)

Thanks so much for doing this video. I kept making excuses for myself for not trying zero waste when grocery shopping! This has inspired me to try a little harder. :)

Thank you for the video Immy, it made me more aware of how I can reduce my waste when grocery shopping. I work at Sainsbury's and the thing that bothers me that even the stuff that is unpackaged on the shelves will still come in some kind of plastic for shipping. For example, I don't know if you noticed but those bananas (which I buy myself regularly) come in a box that is lined with a massive plastic bag so although we're avoiding the individual plastic bags there's still quite a lot of plastic involved (which hopefully will get reused/recycled, I should find out more about what they do with it). But thanks for the tip on choosing the single bananas, I'll be using it in the future! :)

I shop in Morrisons, if I buy anything in plastic, including things like rice, pasta, veg, I can take the packaging back next shopping trip snd put it in the big container just inside the foyer for them to recycle. Any plastic from any shop. Its not ideal but better than going in the bin

Great video, could you try Morrison’s? I personally think it’s the best supermarket, in my area anyway, for lowering waste. It’s been great for getting rice and lentils in cardboard without the bloody cardboard window, great veg selection, lots of loose bread etc and also own brand vegan frozen options in cardboard. Might be worth a shot 👍🏼

Thanks for this video and for drawing attention to how difficult it is to reduce plastic waste for the 'average' consumer. I shop at Sainsbury's and am constantly frustrated by how much stuff is unnecessarily packed in two layers of plastic (such as cherry tomatoes). If you aren't vegan I also recommend taking your own tupperware along and getting stuff like cheese and fish from the deli counters. They also stock Whole Earth nut and seed butters, which are good. But yes, to make sustainable choices you always have to pay significantly more, which means that it will only ever be a minority of people who have the time, money and inclination to do it. Hopefully things will change over the next year, as there is more demand for environmentally friendly options. Really great video, would love more from places like Iceland and Lidl.

where I live in small-town US we have only one store that sells unpackaged. But for example rice is 3 times as expensive unpackaged as in plastic bags and it is one of the same companies so you can compare apples to apples or rice brand to rice brand. I noticed this for several things.

I'm definitely noticing how hard this is as I travel Scotland with my dad. We had to go to a second store just to find oats in paper, and most of the produce is all bundled up in plastic. I saw apples in cardboard rather than plastic (which was exciting cuz I've never seen it before) but they had a little pointless pleastic seal on them which I do not understand. We bought them unpackaged for about the same as in package which was nice though! I'm looking at going to school in St. Andrews, Scotland, but I'm not sure just because plastic-free vegan groceries will be so dang hard (and, of course, it's far from home :) )

Hey , about you saying the tomato’s where expensive , your actually meant to put all fruit , veg and stuff like that on the scales to print a paper label , and it’s much cheaper , that’s how they say to do it xD

Haha, your experience in the oats aisle exactly mirrored mine when I went to Sainsburys the other day. Aldi and Lidl have affordable oats that are wrapped in paper, so I tend to just go there, but those shops are more out of my way. Sainsburys need to do way better with their packaging, and companies in general need to be made to put clear and exhaustive information about how their packaging needs to be disposed of on the product. I bought some maple syrup from Sainsburys that clearly showed that the glass container and metal lid were recyclable, but it didn't mention anything about the plastic stopper thing inside the container. Anyway, rant over XD

Great video! I’ve watched most of Shelbizzle’s videos like this and it’s really interesting to see what things are similar or different in the UK. It’s neat that Sainsbury’s puts all the recycling info on the packagaging. In the US, it’s rare for packaging info to be that detailed. Also, I’m jealous of the Linda McCartney brand; it’s SO difficult to find prepared vegan foods that aren’t in any plastic packaging! Even the stuff in boxes has the actual food items individually wrapped in plastic. 😭 Thanks for this video!

I really like this! I’ve just started my zero waste journey which has come at the same time as changes in my diet - not vegan but no chicken, eggs (unless from a farm ive been to), lamb, pork, organic beef every few weeks - I tried to stop this and felt ill, and still eating fish. These two lifestyle changes had to come together 😂 For years I saw the issues but they didn’t concern me enough and now, it’s great that it’s happening but it’s hard! Even tonight, wanted to buy my favourite sainsburys cake but it’s wrapped in plastic so no more 👍

At the large Sainsbury's near me there is a delicatessen counter selling things like cold meat, cheese, some antipasti like olives and sun-dried tomatoes. I imagine zero waste might be easier at the counter. For the same reason Morrisons might be an interesting supermarket to go through the same test.

I love the banana tip! I've been doing this for months now ever since Shelbi mentioned that you suggest this. Plus I've found that I never throw away bad bananas anymore since this makes me think of exactly how many I need instead of just grabbing a bunch and creating food waste.

Though I limit my trips to the supermarket, I still need some products from there and all the plastic around fruits and vegetables (and everything else in general) drives me crazy! It makes me love my usual bulk stores, market and market hall all the more! Anyhow, I just subscribed to your channel (though I have already watched many of your other videos!), you're so kind and encouraging, it's a really cool attitude!

My local grosser put all the single lonely fruit and vegetables (single bananas, peppers, tomatoes...) aside in a corner and charge less for them so people will choose them before the "regular" produce. Sometimes it comes in non recycle plastic but it's not a lot. So i always go to that corner first (most of the time I get 1,5kg of potatoes for just 1€! It's different varieties put together but who cares, it's just potatoes) that way there is less waste. 😬

Loved this video Immy! It is the same in Australia... worse probably because so much imported food comes from so far away (because we are so far away). I have the best low waste luck going to the farmers market, bakery, butcher (I have lowered my meat days to 4 days/week - something I have been working on), fruit and vege shop, then supermarket in that order. It is definitely a time (and expense) commitment but I find myself being more concious of my diet and using less. It took me such a long time to buy the more expensive small item I can get through rather than the 'deal'. I have built it into my Sunday schedule and found that little treats (coffee at the farmers market) make it a long term option 😶 because I am still bribing myself to be an adult...

Hi :-) Tesco vegetarian burgers are also in a simple cardboard box. And for the recycling instructions at the back of containers, I think it's a UK thing... so may be that's why they were not on the Quacker oats pack. So glad I can see a video of someone as conscious about these things as I am! Thank you so much xx

Sainsbury's own brand frozen vegan burgers etc come just in cardboard, as do Cauldron's Mediterranean vegan sausages. But watch out for the GoodLife frozen range - that stuff looks like it's just cardboard (and if you shake the box sounds like it is) but the food inside is in a plastic bag :( I got caught out there… Also for people on a budget, the bags that Sainsbury's own brand frozen veg come in, can be put in the carrier bag recycling bins - not ideal, but good to know. Thanks for a great video! x

So I know you brought up the distance the tomatoes had to travel earlier in the vid, but one criticism I know of regarding eating locally is that carbon emissions from transportation are minor compared to the total amount, and that sometimes it's more efficient to import from a place that specializes and might be better suited because of the weather. What are your thoughts on this?

About plant based milk. When I started looking for a more zero waste alternative to the tetra brik I actually found a almond milk concentrate in a glass jar. So you just disolve a teaspoon in a glass of water and voilà here you have your almond milk. And I just reuse the glass jar. But that's in Spain, I don't know if in UK you have something similar.

You should do Asda as its horrendous. I went there today as it's close to me and they didn't even have tomatoes which were loose! Also there are flies all over the non packaged stuff on the deli counters! Since they have the US connection with Walmart I think it would be an interesting comparison.

I’d love to see a video about different materials and if they can be recycled as I’m really unaware when I do my food shop despite trying to avoid waste 😰 I get so frustrated with Lidl, I once tried to buy a single onion because there was loads loose in the box but they told me they didn’t sell single onions so couldn’t sell me it!!! It was so annoying how much will have gone to waste because they fell out packaging

I would love to see a video that further explores the trade-off between purchasing items in plastic packaging produced in the UK versus loose products (vegetables, exotic fruits like bananas) that come from far away. In the case of loose avocados imported from Mexico, for example, I hazard to argue that buying these encourages more waste than purchasing a local chicken packaged in a plastic tray and film. I am haunted by the ethics of this trade-off every time I enter a supermarket.

How do you, or anyone reading, deal with that section at the supermarket with discounted (packaged) food that's going to be thrown away if no one buys it because it's coming to its expiration date? I never shop at the supermarket, I hate it and don't want to supporto it with my money. However, sometimes I go with my room mate and seeing all that food that's going to be thrown away even tho it's in perfect conditions breaks my heart. Should I buy some of it, if I need it, to avoid food waste (and recycle the packaging) or should I stay away from it, not giving my money to the corporations that are perpetrating this system of explotation? It's a moral dilemma for me :/
