So... I tried zero waste grocery shopping at Trader Joe's. It was... terrible. I definitely had a better time when I tried zero waste grocery shopping at Walmart (which I never thought I would say).
Do you have access to a dedicated zero waste grocery store? Or just bulk bins in general? Or are you someone who has to do their best at place like Target, Walmart, or even Aldi?
I'm thinking I'll do Whole Foods or Sprouts next, would love to hear what you would like to see (:

Kin's market in canada 2 years ago started to wrap up to 50% of their loose produce in plastic bags. Needless to say the brand slowly started losing properties because of the waste. @@rocsiali4092 Trader joe's will lose money in the long term if they don't change how they manage their produce section.

Really? Where do you live if you don’t mind me asking? I live in Southern California and the Trader Joe’s near me sucks for vegans! Their selection is SO small. But they have a TON of fish, poultry, and meat products. Clark’s Nutrition, which is a small nutrition store with only 3 locations, is literal heaven for vegans and health food fanatics. It’s expensive but has everything you could wish for and more, I love it but I have to drive about 30 minutes to get to the closest one, without traffic, which is rare, so I don’t go much. I end up at Trader Joe’s or Sprouts, which are both down the street from my house. Sprouts is similar to Clark’s but a fraction of the size of Clark’s. Clark’s is bigger with WAY more products to choose from and an enormous selection of herbs and whole food vitamins and supplements. Their vegan foods selection is great too.

I honestly shopped there one time in like the last 5-10 years because I saw that literally all of their stuff was packaged including the produce and this was prior to my low waste journey. It was just completely unnecessary! If they do go package free I will happily give them my business.

I'm invested in this because it's literally the only store on the way from work to my house...so I do think they're aware this is a problem and they have stated a plan to do something about it. Trader Joe's is taking steps to improve things. They're replacing their plastic produce bags with compostable ones, phasing out some of their packaged produce items (like bags of apples), eliminating plastic grocery bags (reusable or paper only), and replacing the packaging on their greeting cards and FLOWERS with renewable/compostable packaging. They also donate or compost all food/flowers that cannot be sold. I'd love to see an update in 6 months to a year where you go back and see what you can get after some of these changes have been implemented.

I have one for you! 2 Eggplant, 1 red bell pepper, 1 onion, 1 large tomato, 6 cloves of garlic. Cut everything up into inch pieces, drizzle olive oil salt pepper oregano dried parsley paprika and roast in the oven. Let cool slightly and in SMALL batches pulse in a food processor just until chopped with a little texture to it (not too long so it doesn’t get gummy) add in fresh chopped parsley and any other spices to taste and you have an AWESOME roasted eggplant dip, a condiment for roasted potatoes, tossed into Vegan eggs, put into a sauce for lasagna, a salad topper... the possibilities are endless.

Jacqueline Layer a way to Kind of get around that is using the plastic containers they provide as long as you can. Bring it with you every time you go to stock up! They usually last pretty long. It’s not perfect but if it’s your only option than it’s the best you can do. And it’s even better than buying big portions in plastic bags.

Jacqueline Layer I’ve found that it depends on the store. One store near me has no problem letting me use my own containers/bags, another store basically refuses me. Before going to a new Whole Foods, I like to call and speak to the manager (get their name so if you have any issues once you get there you have a name to call out) and see what they say

I was just there a few hours ago. Needed to get arugula and it's the only store near me right now (it was so disappointing to get greens in plastic, but I knew what I was getting myself into). I was honestly surprised to see some things, like the apples and peppers, not in plastic. It had been a while since I'd been to a TJ. (I did choose to impulse buy the giant tub of peanut butter cups instead of the smaller bag of individually wrapped ones. Told myself it was okay because the bigger tub is less waste generating.)

I think the way that Trader Joe’s (and Aldi) keeps their costs low is because more plastic = less labor. It’s so much easier to throw 20 bags of lettuce on the shelf than to receive boxes of loose lettuce, crisp it, and hand place it on the shelf. I work at a grocery store where a lot of the produce is loose and it’s so much more labor. Traders doesn’t have a “produce team,” every employee does everything (stocking shelves, cashier, etc.) because there’s nothing too special they have to do other than put it on the shelves.

Right and it makes checkout faster because they just scan the barcode on the packaging instead of having to weigh the produce and enter a code.

That does make sense, although a lot of aldi and lidl items (where I am) just go straight on the shelf in the box they came in, so I'm sure they could just put a cardboard lid on the box that can be taken off when put on the shelf.

The Trader Joe’s in my area have almost everything in large wooden containers and you have to pick them yourself. Nothing is pre-packaged except the berries, pre-cut veggies (which I don’t buy), and of course the salads and that’s pretty much it. Everything else is out in the open for you to pick.

I do this too! If I forget my small reusable bags for little things like snap peas or green beans, I steal paper bags from the sandwich roll bin or the coffee department and get what I need. I leave them open for the cashier and write any corresponding sku codes on the bags. I always try to bring my own, so this is in a pinch. I rinse larger produce at home prior to use, it BAFFLES ME that people need an f-ing plastic holder for citrus, large washable produce, etc. I mean, you need a bag for a banana? It had its own damned packaging!!

Here in Italy, many supermarkets sell things in either glass bottles (Juices, Passata...) also the pasta produced by Barilla doesn't have plastic in it's packaging for most products. Many fruit and vegetables are sold in big baskets and usually, most supermarkets use local sources for their selection. Esselunga is a great place but also there are many small farmer markets especially in small towns where people sell oil made by them and homegrown vegetables.

You can bring your own containers to Sprouts here in Salt Lake City (love Sprouts but wish they had a bigger bulk section). Our Trader Joe's is also bad. I walked in, looked around and walked right back out.

Brand new Follower! I don't know if anyone mentioned this already but with the ingredients you already have there you could have a Ratatouille which is a veggie dish you can either bake or, Ive made it as a stew or even a DIY pasta sauce. Eggplant Onion Tomato and yellow squash typically but I have been known to use bell peppers also. Look up some recipes. Its VERY delish! Loving your content!

You could make Lasagna soup instead maybe. Its a one pot meal where you first sauteed the onion, eggplants and add the tomato and tomato paste. Then add lasagna and cook it all together with spices. That’s what I would do.

Hey Shelbi! Thanks for giving this a go I think you did great! Pastas and rice can be really hard to find plastic free. I noticed when you were looking at the the sauce aisle that there were lots of different sauces other than marinara like harissa (couldn’t tell if it was glass or plastic though 😕). It got me thinking maybe that would be yummy with eggplant and peppers with a side of lemon herb potatoes 🥰🍋🥔🌶🍆

You can cook the potatoes with the tomatoes ,the onion and the canned tomatoes with water ,olive oil and salt and roast the eggplant in the oven with olive oil and spices and that's a great meal( my opinion)

I wish I lived closer to a Whole Foods but I have to go to TJs sometimes pick up certain items for my husband bc he has specific dietary needs. I also started questioning their plastic practices recently. I really would be all for them to have open bins of food that I can select myself. They could totally sell reuseable produce bags and encourage that type of model. I would totally shop there more often and would support a business like that.
@alexc632

If there was flour and oats or nuts to make mylk in paper , you could make a bechamel sauce with it for the lasagna maybe with olive oil (in glass). You can also use potatoes to do that. Its just not as nice without nutritional yeast but maybe if you used lemon juice, salt and spices it would make up for that.

I know, it's sooo hard to find unpackaged items. I try to refrain from getting produce there. I do want to point out that the last time I checked, the lasagna sheets had eggs in them. I also love the sound of both eggplant and glass jars in grocery stores. I probably would have picked up the onion and potato then try to find a jar of curry paste. And maybe canned lentils or chickpeas (not sure if you checked for those?). It's weird there was no rice in cardboard, though.

I use to buy all my grocery’s from Trader Joe’s but when I decided to consumer less plastic, my trip to TJ’s went down. I do love shopping there because it’s small, prices are fair and as a single person, I can live off them. Some things I’m able to buy are tahini and sun dried tomatoes- they are in glass! Also their couscous is packaged in a cardboard box (I sadly can’t eat it due to FODMAPs). I kinda want to send you a photo of the things I’m able to find without at Trader Joe’s. Hopefully it’ll add a little more hope and joy to you 🤞

I rarely go to trader joe's because the one near me is always crowded and it's very small. If I do go there I usually pick up wine for a party. I honestly didn't realize they had so many items wrapped in plastic, that's crazy! I would suggest Sprouts, I remember the ones in AZ had huge bulk sections.
