I turned my OLD CONTROLLER into the ULTIMATE KEYPAD!

This Joystick Keypad gives you all the benefits of a controller's analog stick over the horrible WASD on keyboard! Plus we placed all the keys in easy to reach areas...basically eliminating the need to spend days upon months trying to master the muscle memory required when using a keyboard. This keypad is more like using a controller over a complicated keyboard. We basically combined everything we liked from all of our other custom gaming peripherals and made the ultimate device.

Good job u came a long way. My advice to u would b to have something like a Patreon where people can have a monthly membership and u could use that money to send out prototypes and get feedback from more people and speed up your project. Good luck my friend

Fantastic video and super product you have produced. Trying myself to find a keyboard that are actually playable for my standards, silent as possible, keys that is not to far away nor positioned with no space at all from each other. Awesome video! I grew up a keyboard and mouse player and when I got the 360 I did the exact opposite than you I programmed a PIC to take keyboard and mouse inputs to control an xbox controller. It was ugly but worked and I climb the ranked ladder of Halo 3 like a rocket. I wish I had more time to do projects like this. I showed my son who is getting into Fortnite and is a keyboard and mouse player and he was blown away with what you made. If I ever get a 3d printer I'll probably give making one of these a shot. yeah, this is likely the best path now and I expect T.Y. to use this in his next build. it's also a lot more compact than the PS3 circuit board. and you can do all kinds of customizations by reflashing it later when you have more ideas (e.g. chorded commands built-in to hardware -- no software needed!)

Something that isn't as good as this but could be worth trying out for some people who don't want to DIY would be the old PS3 Navigation controller. It had a joystick, X and O buttons, a D-Pad, L1, L2 and a Playstation button. They're nowhere near as accessible as a custom build like in the video, but you can pick them up cheap and then use software to make your computer recognise it as an X-input device

great to see you! insanely good stuff as always. extremely inspiring. given the shape, i wonder if it would be ergonomic and useful to integrate a mouse into the bottom as well, for one handed playing. apparently sony showed off an accessibility accessory for the PS5 at CES again this year so its a topic that continues to be of some genuine interest and importance. your solution is fantastic and with that addition it would serve that market incredibly well. being 3d printed, its also really easy to mirror for left/right handed use. very excited to see what other ideas you've had and very much looking forward to trying it out.

I have a keypad right now and the main problem is remembering which keys do what. A keypad where you can put icons on the buttons depending on what game your playing would be magical. My dream keypad would allow this but then would add haptics, analog triggers, and adaptuve resistance to allow you to for example push one button halfway down, the haptics and resistance would tell the finger youve hit halfway, and by pressing through the adaptive barrier allows you to perform the second action. The mac keypads already do this. When you think you're clicking, that's actually haptics causing the sensation a normal clickpad would cause. I think it would be possible to make work on a keypad as well. could be used to adjusting dps on the fly at different levels cooking and firing grenades jump and double jump etc etc etc.

Very to cool to see more videos from you! I've been closely following your progress since your first video on the subject, and it's super impressive how far you've come. I do wonder how well this works sitting on a couch though? It seems like you would still need some kind of desk/flat surface to put it on to use it, which wouldn't be idea for couch gaming. Also this doesn't seem to really fix the aiming precision that you were trying to achieve with mouse controller does it? Keep up the awesome work, can't wait to see where this goes!

I've looked for something almost exactly like this, and come up empty, time and time again. Either it's single inventor such as yourself or a small company who has since gone under with all their products now unavailable for sale. Anything that I CAN find is either extremely expensive boutique hardware or has a 4-way rocker switch where the analog stick should clearly be. Actually, thinking about it this is probably the best implementation of this idea I've seen. Basing the device on a controller allows for something I haven't heard you touch on yet: Steam Input. Since this presents as a controller, you could use Steam Input to remap and modify the keys in a surprising amount of ways, up to and including remapping those controller buttons to keyboard inputs, bringing the idea full circle.
@MichaelButlerC
@MichaelButlerC Жыл бұрын
That's one of the biggest strengths of this thing. If the keys were just pure keyboard keys, you couldn't do the fancy stuff like HOLD button or DOUBLE TAP for more actions. But being a PS3 controller, like you said Steam Input is possible, and other programs too.

I feel the same way about using a controller with fortnite. I recently bought a keyboard joystick and within a couple of days saw an improvement in my mechanics. However, I quickly realised there are way to many binds to remember on keyboard and I don't have the time to grind the game to improve. The best thing about controller is how easy it is to just pick it up and play the game, and the binds are so much simpler in a way as they are all accessible without having to do some crazy finger gymnastics!! The downside is how quickly you can reach a skill ceiling, and having tried different sensitivities, controllers and settings its really difficult to improve. Would love to see a video of how you set the keypad binds up with some gameplay. Keep up the good work. P.s would definitely buy one if you put it into production.

With the second unused joystick you cold turn that into binary buttons with some electronic logic or just attach it to a 4-way hat switch and put above the thumb joystick. When the hat reaches its max position, then let the analog signal through, essentially turning it into a binary button click.

I love your ingenuity with these things. Keyboards are indeed an adjustment for longtime console players. I know because I've had the same problem. All those keys being next to each other and feeling the same makes it really easy to fumble over them all and press the wrong thing if you didn't start out that way. On the flipside, aiming with an analog stick is just awful after you get used to a mouse. Damn near any other genre is fine with a controller but, it's always the shooters that require something better tailored to the gameplay. You keep doing what you do. The answer is definitely there and even you don't find it, I'm sure you'll inspire the person who will.

Btw...I also use controllers for movement with a mouse for aiming on some games, too. If it's a game with little inputs, it definitely works. If you're playing something with more inputs, however, it definitely does not.

I've been using these things for years. Belkin nostromo n52, razer orweaver, tartarus, logitech g13 etc etc for over 10years. Theyre all good. But each had problems, like heavy keys, or heavy thumbstick. people don't realise how much of a gamechanger controlling movement with your thumb is, not just in FPS games, but especially in MMOs. Good god, the advantage you have in mmos is insane when you move with your thumb, and not WASD. I even use thumb to move in Lost ark. (razer tartarus, theres a thumb button and a thumbstuck. binded thumb button to mouse click) Your hardware has the potential to be awesome, like you could use cherry speed, or mx silent keys etc, or even have a super smooth and responsive thumbstick, hell your thumbstick is already better than the junk razer gives us. But selling point for many, is also the key bind software. Razer has, by far, the best key bind tech. While Logitech's keybinding can be awkward, Razer's is intuitive, flexible and extremely powerful, you can bind key combinations and timings like no other software can. sidenote: while razer's keybinding is best on the market in my oppinion, Razer Synapse 3 is utter dogshit of a program. so yeah ... on hardware alone, what you're doing can be a massive boon to gamers, expecially if you allow hot-swappable keys, (keyboard enthusiasts would love that) and if you can get a binding software to come close to what razer's can do, you're in the money.

I love this ideia of something more organic for actions in game, my only problem would be the jump action, normally the button for jump on this design is the button in the side of the joystick , so u have to stop moving to jump. How u solve this problem other than changing the jump button?
