Love these recipes, Abbey! You are really helping me balance my favorite foods with more nutritional-dense ones. On that note, do you think you could try this type of video again but with a vegetarian addition? I find that as a vegetarian my hardest goal is getting in enough protein that isn't eggs, tofu, or yogurt. You can only eat so much to get enough protein! Or just some fun high protein vegetarian/vegan recipes - naturally with that hunger crushing combo.

I know you didn’t ask lol but here’s a recipe for protein pancakes: 150g cottage cheese 40g oats 1 egg 2 tbsp honey / sweetener (I usually add in flavour drops) 1/2 tbsp baking powder Blend, then fry in butter/oil (bcs they might stick) Obviously these aren’t a substitute for the real deal but if ur feeling creative and want to give it a go I’d definitely recommend 😂

Beans, lentils, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, Tempe, nut butters, protein powder! I tend to use the nut butters and protein powder for sweeter dishes (pancakes, smoothies, etc), I throw cottage cheese/greek yogurt in with veggies, to make sauces, or other meals, and I use beans as the base for a lot of my meals (tacos, burritos, mashed as a sandwich filling, chili, soups, hummus, quesadillas, etc). I also find Tempe has a great flavour for adding into sandwiches or using generally as a meat substitute.

Hearing Abbey stir the Kraft Mac n Cheese was like the best childhood ASMR 😂 I always had to have tons of salt n pep on it. Also one of my favorite childhood treats was those Carnation breakfast bars. You can still find the breakfast drink powder but not the bars. Such powdery, chalky bars that were somehow appealing. Thanks for the great HCC and the memories.

You should be thankful that you don't have access to all the American junk foods. It pays to have LESS access to certain things. My secret to healthy eating is to have plenty of healthy foods at home but no junk food. Healthy eating is the path of least resistance. This is one of the few times in life when it pays to be busy, lazy, or distracted.

@@jasonhsu4711 So true! That’s also how I grew up, lots of healthy food, vegetables and fruits every day, nuts, not too much sugar, almost always freshly cooked… I never even had the chance to get used to eating junk food daily so I don’t crave that now like some others do. Sure, I had ice cream, candy, or fries from time to time but not in masses so I still see it as a little treat to enjoy from time to time, but it never was something “normal” to eat. So no or little access to junk food is indeed the best that can happen to you. I, for one, am thankful to my parents for having mostly fresh and healthy food at home. I’ve seen enough people who didn’t grow up like that and think that healthy, high quality food is boring because they are so used to junk food…

And let's be honest, who isn't touched by diet culture? We recently realized our dad hides food and binge eats. Very cool tips for using nutritional yeast. I still love it on popcorn (a holdover from my being a vegan as a cover for dieting phase), but would never think to put it in something like mac n cheese or soup.

Your grilled cheese story reminds me of a story I have about Kraft singles cheese. Once when I was about 5 years old, I decided that the cup of milk on the Kraft single package was a serving suggestion rather than telling you that it's made with real milk. So, I insisted that my mom make me a bowl of Kraft singles with milk poured on it - like, Sliced cheese cereal. 🤢 Because I insisted, she obliged and tried to make me at least eat a few bites before giving up after I realized that was not a good idea. 😅

Isn't spaghetti and meatballs already a hunger crushing combo? Carbs, protein, fat in the meat and parmesan and fibre in the tomato... Maybe you can use chickpea pasta for added protein and fibre, or swap out some of the noodles for zoodles. You can also enrich the tomato sauce with celery and carrots (finely chopped) - that's how the Italians do bolognese i think and it adds sweetness as well as fibre and nutrients!

re jar opening: dish gloves are great for helping with grip. Also running a metal or plastic lidded glass jar under really hot water helps loosen it to turn because a) the metal and plastic expand faster than the glass and b) just barely enough hot water gets into the threads to loosen anything helping it stick together. just remember to wipe down the threads. I use both tricks often as joint issues make jar opening troublesome. that grilled cheese looks fantastic. Ever tried peanut butter and honey sandwiches? quite tasty.

I’m team Poptarts myself. The way I’ve tried to balance it as an adult is to eat it with fruit and peanut butter. For mac&cheese, I’ve never heard of adding ketchup to it. That just seems wrong to me, and I’m a ketchup-lover! Dad likes canned tuna added to his, but I can’t stand fish. I ate it plain as a kid, but then I got to a point where I couldn’t stand any cheese sauce (I’ve never been a big cheese person anyways). Grilled cheese to me is white bread and Kraft American cheese. I’m not a fan of sourdough, and any other cheese just doesn’t melt right and most are too strong for me (see above about not being a big cheese person lol). The way I make grilled cheese is by buttering both sides, then I toast one side of the bread, and THEN assemble it with the side I toasted in the center before toasting the outside and letting the cheese melt. Also to me I’m a purist-adding non-cheese fillings to the sandwich automatically makes it a melt, not a grilled cheese. I also can’t stand tomato soup, so I usually eat my grilled cheese by itself. Though one unique thing that started when I was in college was dipping it in guacamole. Surprisingly tasty! Cinnamon toast was a snack for me, rather than a meal.

I LEGIT can’t choose between Toaster Strudels and the Pop Tarts. They’re just SO GOOD! Both are such a throwback to simpler times. Thank you for another video of HCCs, they really help. Some foods I would love to see are: Nutella (my literal weakness 🤤) PB&J sandwiches 🥜 (or just PB in general), Sour Patch Kids and sweets, fries 🍟, Cadbury mini eggs, cake, donuts and pretzels 🥨. Lots of love and support! 🤍🤍🤍

I saw cinnamon sugar toast and I’ve never clicked faster in my life. I ate this RELIGIOUSLY as a kid (birth defects = major food/digestion issues, especially as a child) and it’s one of the only foods I ate as a kid that I’m not completely sick of now 😂

My Mom was a horrible cook so she made KD all the time only she never got the powder really mixed in. I would get little nuggets of salty goodness in there an I have to say I loved it. I never make it now since my husband hates it and I can't really sit down and eat a whole box but last year when I had my colonoscopy I was supposed to eat mushy foods so I made a box and ate on it all day. It was really comforting.

Thank you so much for this video!!! As someone in ED recovery who also never gained their taste and smell back after Covid (over a year ago!!) I have the hardest time with so any aspects with food and deciding what to eat. I am someone with a big sweet tooth and not a lot of funds for food I rely so much on specific fruit and veggies but it’s even more difficult when I get these urges for the more processed and cheap foods and I feel so guilty about the idea of choosing “bad” food items. I’ve been doing so well with not letting my ED take the reigns and this video has made me feel more as ease and I guess normal in a way 😊 you’re the best Abbey!!!

idk if she's done a PB&J in another video yet, but my thought process would be: wholegrain bread (fiber), peanut butter (healthy fat), your fave jelly, and either a thinly sliced apple or banana to layer on top of the PB before closing up the sandwich if you want the extra fruit/fiber. And for more protein you could maybe do a hard boiled egg or some salami sticks on the side?
@paulabailey9791

Or maybe the sandwich made the way you like it with either a bowl of yogurt or glass of milk for more protein and some fruit for fiber.

I'm sorry, but... what psycho opts for water and not milk with making canned tomato soup?! LOL! (teasing) Though, honestly, I just had something similar the other day. It was more like a grilled capresse sandwich with fresh basil. I'm definitely team cream of tomato soup, but my husband hates cream based soups. I love the idea of yogurt, fruit, and nuts with the pop-tart croutons. LOL! I might have to try that since my kids are fiends for pop-tarts and toaster strudels. Could you change out chickpeas for the white beans?

The first time I had macaroni and cheese I was 28. My mom said “you were lactose intolerant from birth why would I give you a literal bowl of cheese” when I asked her why I never had it. It’s okay, but it holds no nostalgia for me so I don’t ever want or crave it.

This may be my favorite of your fear foods series so far! As a kid I preferred pop parts (especially brown sugar cinnamon) then as I got older switched to toaster strudel. But I definitely need to try that pop tart parfait! And I already love mixing veggies in with my mac and cheese, so I'll have to try your version too. Thanks again for the yummy meal/snack ideas and inspiration!

What direction are we heading here? We have now turned a 200 calorie pop tart into an 800 calorie STILL unsatisfying “gotta eat again in two hours” breakfast. You cannot simply add proteins and fats and fiber to otherwise calorie dense nutritionally deficient foods and expect that all problems are resolved. Yes, you may be satisfied… but who wouldn’t when you’re significantly overeating your calorie needs?

I didn’t know my go to dinner in college was a HCC, thought I was the only one who added cottage cheese!…and I didn’t add the yeast or ketchup😵‍💫….I HAVE GOT to try the pop tart hack, but brown sugar pop tarts were my ❤️‼️We always make sourdough grilled cheese with turkey ❣️‼️❤️ Pro Tip= we keep the bread in the freezer, take out your slices and spread softened butter on frozen bread…you don’t use as much butter and it goes on smooth cause your bread is hard. Bread thaws and toasts nicely💖 Mom learned on the farm to use a drip of coffee mixed in to melt butter, sugar and cinnamon together…spread on toast and briefly broil to get bubbly….it’s the most insane cinnamon toast you’ll ever have…even if you’re not a coffee fan (what?!) it just ands a nice homey touch ❤️‼️

My grandma always made cinnamon sugar toast aka "kaneltoast" in danish, with 2-3 day old bread. She would butter it up, mix sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle it on top then put it in the oven for 10 minutes 😋 The sugar gets caramelized and it is so good!
