I Unlocked a Used Metro by T-Mobile Phone for Free (Without a Metro Account)

You just bought a used phone, but it's locked to a carrier that you don't use. What can you do to unlock the phone to use with your carrier?
I bought a used Samsung Galaxy phone that was locked to Metro by T-Mobile to figure this out. If you have been struggling with unlocking your device (particularly a device you bought used) I think this video can help you out. I go over issues like: buying a used locked device and not having an account with the original carrier, the cost and concerns with using an online unlock service, and the thrilling conclusion where I do in fact unlock the device from Metro by T-Mobile.
A few tips for unlocking:
Start with the original carrier's customer service department, if that fails--check out some unlock services online or from local smartphone repair shops, and if that fails . . . try reaching out to customer service through different means: chat functionality through their website, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc., find a good number to call them that will get you to an actual customer service rep and not an automated system.

Hi I've went to my neighborhood Metro and bought a moto stylus 5. And still buying monthly time. It's been about five months since buying the cell. Can we have the phone unlocked with, or without metro getting involved.

Hello! If it's been 180 days since it was activated, and the device is paid off you should be able to unlock by the device unlock app. Otherwise, you'll need to reach out to Metro.

Thats so helpful, I actually have a big domain of looked devices as a brogramer outside the USA specially in the middle east (Yemen), do you think the carrier company (any of them) would collaborate to unlock the devices for a price ? I really need help in that.

Hello Saleh! Glad it was helpful. For bulk unlocking, I would suggest reaching out to a third party unlocking company for something like that--my guess is the major carriers will not be willing to work with anyone for bulk unlocks (I could be wrong though).

Thanks for the video. I have a paid off iPhone and it was actived in 4/2022. I Should be able to unlock it in October :-). From the language written in their policy, I should be able to, but if not I'll try your method:-)

My issue is the phone was Metro SEALED brand new. After many calls a human at Metro said the phone was already unlocked but still showing locked because is was never activated. They said any store could finish the process. I’m not believing that yet.

Hello FPChris! Locks are annoying, I don't buy phones from carrier's or locked devices anymore just avoid the headache (unless I make a video about it!). I'd be surprised if they would unlock an unactivated device since their terms say "One hundred eighty (180) days must have passed since the device's activation date" as of 5/19/23. But who knows? Worth a shot I'd say. Please let me know if a store will unlock it, that would be interesting.

Have a one plus nord 200 5, owned it since aug 21. Went to unlock it to use with q link, says it can not be unlocked? Been well over time limit?? Help here

Hello Brian! I would reach out to the carrier that the Nord is locked to. If you're having a hard time with customer service reps over the phone, I would try Twitter. Or if your carrier has a store near you, in-person might be best.

@@benjmiester Good luck! I've had sellers that were willing to help me out, but not many. I recently tried to pay to have a Pixel 6 unlocked from Verizon, and a local shop couldn't do it. Unlocking is such a headache sometimes.

Hello Chima! I Unfortunately no, I'm pretty sure that will not work. I've heard of T-Mobile sims working in Metro devices, but that's about it. I'm sorry! You could definitely try, especially if the Simple Mobile hasn't been activated yet.

Hello Subway! Yes, after 180 days you can either unlock your device through the app or request the unlock from Metro. Just as long as your account is in good standing. As long as the carrier you switch to using similar frequency bands you are good to go (AT&T and T-Mobile plus the smaller carriers that use their networks).

Hey bro I got a question. My mom bought new iPhone 14 pro in us from metro pcs carrier. Now I live in India and she have visited me here . She wants to give it to me. The phone is locked . She had paid full amount while buying. It has esim only feature which metro has already activated with their own esim . Now the problem is I can’t add any new esim until it is unlocked. But the problem is that the metro sim doesn’t work here. So how would I contact the metro pcs from India to know the process. And finally she had bought this phone in October. Do you have any suggestions

Hello Swedeepadhikari! I'm thinking Metro will refuse to unlock the device until 180 days have passed since it was activated. You can certainly try to reach out to their support through social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram), but unfortunately I doubt they will be willing to unlock it early, even though it is paid off.

Hi I had the same issue but mine was the Nokia X100. My mom travelled for a short visit in the US. I called the customer care from Nigeria they actually answered spoke to the guy on the phone & explained the issue. He said he unlocked for me that all I had to do was put. A new sim that didn't still work it was showing me cannot reach server at this time try again. I have complained to there Twitter they raised a ticket for me I'm waiting to hear from them. My thing is can they actually unlock the phone from there servers. Because I saw somewhere that someone day they can't

@@obaJerome-le9qo bro my phone is now unlocked . Actually after 180 days also the metro pcc did not do anything then I tried to add new sim but it did not work. I contacted them with their online chat option. Their they explained it to me that I have to reset the network settings then it would work. I tried every solution that they had provided to me but after 200 days or so from the purchase day my phone was unlocked remotely without notifying me . I had just tried to add esim again and this time it worked. Hope yours problem would also be resolved soon..

@@swedeepadhikari951 bro hi thanks for the feedback but my phone was actually unlocked weeks Ago. I had to call the metro customer care on the phone I spoke to the Agent he was actually very nice. I explained the situation & he unlocked it for Me remotely. But that didn't work. I had to factory reset the phone before it accepted my SIM. Thank you bro I actually appreciate I'm Glad it all worked out man. I've even met other people with the same issue I gave them the same advice & it worked out for them too thanks

Hmm, Metro will only unlock a phone if 180 days have passed and if it had been 180 days the device unlock app should have worked? Any idea why it didn't work?

I bought a phone from metro and I bought a plan....I don't like they service and left to another company with the phone number. But refuse to unlock the phone I bought telling I have to use they service. They said I have 80 more days to go. Hello Tameeka, unfortunately yes that's the policy. I would suggest trying to pick up a used phone real cheap (ebay or Mercari) and/or sell your Metro locked phone-as long as it's paid off. I'm sorry I don't have better news! You can try an unlocking service, but it might not be worth the money and time (and there's no guarantee it will work).

Hello Raymond! I'd be surprised if it gave you trouble. Since the REVVL series is T-Mobile's own line (rebranded TCL phones) they should be just fine on T-Mobile or Metro.

Hello James! It can be a huge headache for sure. I actually just went through this again with a used Pixel 6 I bought from a seller on Mercari. They said the phone was unlocked and it was not, but I kept it anyway since I was able to figure out from the seller (before they stopped responding) the date it was activated-and Verizon customer service verified that the account it was last activated under was in good standing. All I had to do was wait 20 days for the automatic remote unlock from Verizon. Lots of hoops, but for some people it's worth it for a bargain!

Hello Emissary! I'm not an unlocking service, but if you've already tried to unlock the phone for free through your carrier--and could not, I would suggest trying a local phone repair shop if you have any close by. Many repair shops also unlock phones.

Hello Kane! Sorry, for some reason your other comments keep disappearing for me. Unfortunately, yes, the carriers are pretty firm on their unlocking policies. Trying a store could work, since (you are totally right) it often depends on who you talk to. Yes, reselling might be the best bet sadly. Or you could try an online unlocking service?

Hey David! Did you try a factory reset on the phone? It wipes all your data then reinstalls the original apps that shipped with the device.

Hello David! Sorry to hear you've had a rough time with Metro. I've never been a Metro customer, but I have had great and terrible experiences with carriers--sometimes you get bad customer service reps or salespeople, other times they can be exceptional. I've also noticed a difference between franchise and corporate stores. I'm currently with Mint for my main wireless account and I'm very happy. Who are you with now, if you don't mind sharing?

Hey I just bought a Samsung galaxy A12. The carrier was metro by T-Mobile. I currently have a account with Assurance Wireless which uses the T-Mobile network. I put my Assurance Sim card in the Samsung I just bought and it said network locked. I hit the permanent unlock request button on the metro unlock app and it denied with a #37 code. Do I just do what u did and get ahold of metro custo.er service so.e how and explain my situation and hopefully they unlock it for me?

Hello Timothy! Yep-that's exactly what I would do. If the first rep you speak with on the phone or on Twitter (wherever) can't help, I would try again using a different method and see if another rep can help. Hopefully the previous owner had a Metro account in good standing and the device is paid off! Good luck Timothy!

Unfortunately, that is what most carrier customer service reps say now. They don't want to unlock a phone if it was stolen. You can try reaching out through social media or an email where you can attach your receipt for the phone.

@@hafizrehman1992 You certainly can! I'm sorry I can't help more. Carriers should be more receptive to an unlocking policy based on meeting a specific date, regardless of whoever is using the phone.
