I Used an Endoscopic Camera to Peek Into an Ant Nest in My Giant Ecosystem Vivarium

I created my dream rainforest vivarium, named Pantdora, but it has completely been taken over by invasive black crazy ants, who occupy one of the most coveted spots in the terrarium: the Hallelujah Tree Stump, a giant piece of driftwood hallowed out by termites that many of the inhabitants of the rainforest call home. In this episode, we use an endoscopic probe camera to look into the stump and learn about the nesting behaviours of the invasive ants in hopes to stop them from dominating the ecosystem. The worm in the video: Terrestrial planarians, relatives of the well-known regenerative flatworms, are fascinating creatures. Known for their remarkable ability to regenerate, these land-dwelling planarians can reproduce through fragmentation, where each part has the potential to grow into a new worm. Even more intriguing is their predatory nature, especially evident during wet weather when they actively hunt. They utilize viscous slime trails to trap small prey like slaters and millipedes. The planarian then engulfs its victim in slime and feeds through its belly-located mouth. Interestingly, their digestive system has only one opening, serving both for ingestion and excretion. This unique biological feature, along with their regenerative abilities, makes terrestrial planarians an intriguing subject of study.

Its movement looks extremely similar to a leech, but looking it up leeches are segmented flatworms and this worm doesn’t look to have segments, so you are probably correct.

I have to say, my favorite part of this series so far is the running storyline of the acrobat ant (and for the purposes of the story, it’s definitely just one individual acrobat ant) constantly talking trash to much larger creatures and threatening to spray them with formic acid while they either completely disregard him or fail to notice him entirely.

You should put blind snakes in the ecosystem. They eat up ant brood, and since black crazy ants can't defend themselves against the blindsnakes and the marauders can, they might be able to reduce the population of the black crazy ants

I think they would likely prey on marauders as well as they live in the ground and can't move their eggs away as fast

@@AntsCanada Maybe in the soils of your backyard, I've found them in pots or under bricks very often, so they wouldn't really be a hassle to find. They might prey on the marauders and the termite(they could be an easier target, but seing how hidden they are in this state, they would mst likely bump into the black crazy ants and their brood pile before meeting the termites), but the black crazy ants are the easiest to hunt as they are fragile, and most they could do.is Spray acid on their scales. The marauders could still defend themselves using their large majors to bite onto the snake, hopefully scaring it away. Also, keep the series going as long as you can. It's really is helping me learn how ecosystems work, so maybe soon, I could make my own.

@@duploman1000 ye, these snakes are pretty much like earthworms, with their main defence mechanisms is their point tail. They also have super small mouths, being able to only eat the larvae of the smaller majors and the minors in the marauder colony. Plus, the marauders could scare the snake off by biting down on its tail, making it flail around. The black crazy ants can't do anything like that. The only thing they could do is spray acid on the scales of the snake, which to the ants seems extremely tough. The termites are the easiest target, but they are hidden deep inside the stump, so it would likely bump into a huge brood patch of the black crazy ants.

I can confirm the green reapers exact species because i have her in my collection:its a green morph of the Philippine marbled mantis,i can tell due to the leg stripes, also the “male” mantis is actually a female and both mantids are stil not fully grown

I did some research for you, sulawesain toads feast on crazy ants. Im not quite sure what kind of impact they may have on your ecosystem. But it may they help with put some control over the invasive species.

I like the vacuum idea. Even if you don't get rid of the entire hoarde, you are the best and most effective predator possible. You can be specifically targeting them alone. You can take as many as necessary without having to completely eliminate them. You can do it without harming anything else in the environment. Gradually, your vacuuming will become less and less necessary as the balance of life reaches homeostasis. Eventually, even the crazy ants will be brought into check. I look forward to watching the journey!!!

Ugh. Same here. I love watching the dynamics of a thriving ecosystem, and I really wish it were feasible to manage one that wasn't 90% arthropods. But it's not feasible, and the real world is like 99.9% arthropods, so I'm just amazed to see what AC here is able to pull off. This environment is amazingly natural, its progressive changes are really logical, and this is really well documented, so in spite of it all I can't look away... "ew... oh cool... ugh, c'mon... oh hey, neat... ick, why... oh wow..."

7:13 - the worm represented here is resembling a soil-dwelling nematode. They eat pretty much everything that their environment has: soil, plants and roots, living or dead animals, fungi or even bacteria. Some of their species can be pests if they happen to be in farming fields, but some are important in maintaining the nutrient cycle in soil and for pest control. And they don't have eyes at all, these are specs of dirt stuck on its head.

As others have said, if the dark horde is getting too out of control either introduce a predator like blindsnakes or Draco volans to the ecosystem or vacuum up some of them when they migrate. You can treat the vacuuming as an ecological event. "This vacuum simulates how an anteater or echidna would feed upon a colony in the wild!"

As I commented a few episodes ago, some kind of dedicated ant predator needs to be added to the vivarium. The explosive growth of the Dark Horde means that without some kind of biological control, they will soon destroy the ecosystem and hunt out all prey species.

Careful mating the Green Reaper! Approximately 150-180 young mantises can emerge from each egg case. My family learned this the hard way once... a Christmas tree had a few egg cases, and many hundreds of mantis hatched in our house.

What about adding a blind snake/worm snake? They’re a species of snake that feeds mainly on earthworms, but will also feed on slugs, snails, spiders, caterpillars, and yes ants. I remember that you’ve previously had an experience with one of these snakes way back in 2017 when one found its way into one of your terrariums. Back then you were scared it would eat your eats, but perhaps in a massive vivarium like Pandora, it’d be nice to have an apex ant predator to help control the ant population. Just a thought, you’re doing great with this documentary on Pandora by the way! Ant Love Forever! 🐜❤️

Yes, the Green Reaper still has at least 2 more molts before she reaches maturity. Fun fact about mantises is that they don’t grow their wings until their final molt, and the previous molt will have 4 little sacs on her back which she currently does not have. These sacs are her developing wings. That will be your clue in as to when she’s near fully grown. You should also be very careful about introducing the other mantis even if it is male. Most mantises will happily cannibalize their own species, so you might want to wait until they are both sexually mature (they’ll both have their wings) that way they might have a chance at mating before one devours the other.

I know some mantis keepers also feed their mantises before introducing them for mating so it’s less likely they will turn on and eat each other before they can get to reproducing

Great information! Can Mantises mate easily with other breeds or is it common for them to be too genetically different to mate? Like with dogs and cats we know it's easy but spiders and ants never mate outside their genome. Come to think of it, I don't even know if there _are_ insects that can mate outside their genome, I assume they must be able up to a certain point for evolution to work, right?

That really was neat to see. I felt so bad for them as I think Jimmy was eaten and the video footage was simply of other nymphs or babies popping up trying to escape the onslaught too. Following one w a camera would be an epic feat I'm not sure could have happened. Great editing though. It's funny he gives worm and spider or arachnid warnings, hahaha, but hey, crickets with names, babies no less, being kidnapped and eaten *_alive_* in the seemingly most painful way ever - while still conscious? I love watching these series, I built a pill bug terrarium for my son 2 years ago. He loves animals and insects, he enjoyed watching them crawl around and would add more whenever he found one outside. Eventually he decided to free them back into our yard, I too enjoyed watching them grow and finding new hatchlings in the terrarium.

Placing the pitcher plants close to the dark hoard's trails but away from other animals will be a good start. Personally my bigger fear is that the prey needs of the predators in the environment, including the ants, will at some point outpace the ability for the prey animals to keep up. Pantdora is pretty large for a vivarium but it is only so big. For example, I don't think we saw a single sign of those really colorful roaches this episode, when we have seen them every episode prior at least once. A natural environment also has more parasites and fungi, because those organisms are naturally harder to introduce by accident than the animals that you have introduced by accident. Some sort of parasite that goes after the black crazy ants specifically would emulate the natural world too. If it were a parasitic fungus, mite, wasp, or something else very visual, that could even create good content. The last possibility is to give the marauders or acrobats a boost or advantage. Both ants have proven to hold up in a fight and perhaps they can limit the dark hoard if they are boosted somehow.

As soon as I saw the black crazy ant and fire ant colonies I was immediately like “GET THOSE OUT OF THEIR WHILE THEY’RE STILL SMALL!!” But he said he was afraid of disrupting the ecosystem by interfering with nature. However invasive species who are displaced out of the natural environment are not a part of the natural balance so I really don’t think that counts since there is nothing to control them besides AC himself. I feel like he should’ve intervened while they were still small, now I’m not sure how he’s gonna get rid of them.

I think you have to specifically avoid parasites and fungi because it always has a chance to infect all of his other colonies and vivariums, especially the fungi with their naturally difficult to contain spores.

True. Pitcher Plants are not gonna be enough and will likely just kill other insects for then the ants themselves. As soon as I saw the black crazy ant and fire ant colonies I was immediately like “GET THOSE OUT OF THEIR WHILE THEY’RE STILL SMALL!!” But AC said he was afraid of disrupting the ecosystem by interfering with nature. However invasive species who are displaced placed into an environment which they are not native to are ultimately NOT apart of the natural environment in the wild let alone an inclosed vivarium. There is nothing fast enough to balance or control the, so I really don’t think AC interfering by removing them would’ve counted since there is nothing to control them besides AC himself. There’s nothing he can really do to “balance” them as they are constantly multiplying themselves. I feel like he should’ve intervened while they were still small, now I’m not sure how he’s gonna get rid of them. The only other thing I can think of is adding a top ant predator like a blind worm snake or something but even that is not guaranteed to be enough.

If nothing else, this microcosm is a great demonstrator of just how destructive an invasive species can be when they have a chance to get a foothold in an area. Those black crazy ants pushed out the locals in an extremely short period of time and don't seem to be slowing down

apparently when they started that closed dome experiment in the desert for space research, there were a bunch of different insects that had found their way in. but only a couple years later the black crazy ants had completely replaced every other ant and wiped out most of the other arthropods too

Yeah he's a little too optimistic I think. Like when he celebrated finding the Marauders in the soil because black crazy ants don't maneuver on soil as well. That's fine and dandy until the numbers overwhelm the hard surfaces and they inevitably move into the soil with the sheer numbers to overcome their venerability on soft surfaces. Same with the crickets. Sure, some of them survived this time but that feast is going to fuel the ant numbers and there is no way the crickets will be able to reproduce fast enough to survive the next round. Eventually they will run out of small food and turn their sights on to larger prey like lizards and then it's game over for the vivarium. Personally, I'm disappointed the pitcher plants won because I don't think they have a chance at making a dent versus predatory frogs.

Honestly, I think you shouldn't give up on the idea of maybe vaccuuming the horde at some point so soon. The goal wouldn't be to erradicate them, but just keep them from overwhelming the entire ecosystem. The problem is I can't think of any predators that could cull their numbers without also threatening the marauders. The crazy ants will be fine if you take out 50% of their swarm, they will just take time to rebuild and meanwhile wouldn't be as big a threat. Think of it as another ecological event

I think you're right, more so than others suggesting more predators, more, more! lol when in these shoes yes. Just reduce their numbers. More predators will cause a severe imbalance. They'll prey on each other instead of the ants. Bigger meal, bigger reward. Vacuum and removal.. OR.. a "natural" event (volcanic eruption happens where scalding hot water splashes a very large area) like pouring boiling water down the queens chambers. They don't need hundreds of queens so just knock them down. Anyone saying "the poor ants!" too bad, they'll be fine. Think of how many Mikey killed with the cheap amazon endoscope that could have been 4k video quality but _wasn't_ somehow? You know he squished hundreds or more. It's how it is.

Yes I was also thinking of combining vaccuuming the horde and introducing new predators to at least cull the crazy ant colony a bit. Once the rest of the ecosystem has reached a decent balance, they can probably be left alone for a while, but they're getting too big too fast now.

But this is artificial environment which imitates a natural one, and all the living things there were supposed to be carefully picked to suit Pantdora's ecosystem - except the Ants. BC ants could mean more harm to it later than it seems now. But that's my opinion before watching the episode so lemme get back to it.

Or you can be realistic and realize that nature has no concept of invasive, and that balance operates at a time scale much larger than any human can comprehend or calculate.

That small worm is for sure a nematode by the looks and behavior. Hard to tell which one but it looked that one immediately to me. Plus they’re adapted to literally every eco system so there’s definitely nematodes in cloud forests. Overall, additional proof of the already immense biodiversity in the vivarium. It’s amazing to watch. Likely was introduced with the blackwater

I think it will be necessary. I question just how much of the "resilience" is due to nature "fighting back" versus human replenishment of the tank. Sure, the sheer number of crickets overwhelmed the ants this time but I highly doubt enough survived to produce such large numbers again and even if they did, the previous feast means the number of ants will have quadrupled by then.

If this truly is about witnessing nature proceed, it seems foolish to project human bias into it. Nature does not have a concept of invasive. It moves forward and changes in many different ways. If the black crazy ants continue to proliferate, then that's just a part of nature at work in this setting. Let them dominate and see what happens. Otherwise you're just playing god.

Almost my exact thinking, sure there is prey of the crickets, roaches, etc. Etc. But the ants are almost an alpha species themselves and if not taken care of they will 100% explode in population quickly. But I am also 100% ants Canada knows this and doesn't need us to tell him lol

@@Direultimatum i bet there aren't very many of those iridescent roaches or the other critters initially put in left. Am shocked "Rock Steady" (LOLOLOL) isn't dead yet either. They should have all been introduced, even the crickets roughly a full 6-12 months for them to really establish a breeding foothold before introduction of even the very first ant. It reminds me of people setting up a reef tank in one day and thinking it's going to work or they'll be instant success. Some might but that's not how it works. You have to let it mature if doing things right. Like not putting certain animals in for a long time so they too can get a foothold and start breeding populations so by the time you DO add fish and living corals, it's a tank MORE than ready to go and they'll thrive vs exist or.. die within hrs. It has a name even. New Tank Syndrome. NTS. I think that's what Mikey did. 1 month isn't anything time wise. Like most marine hobbyists, they just have little to no patience. Especially the more money they have. When you're used to getting everything you want, and have to wait now instead.. it kind makes them push the envelope as what was done here. I don't blame people, I'm inpatient too at times, but with a project like this or a $100-$100K reef tank.. it's better to just chill for a bit. Relax. Jumping that gun is what led to the invasive species being introduced in the very first place. Any ant deaths that result from vacuuming and tossing them far out into the yard to die without queen, it's 100% mikey's fault. He should have known better with the glory stump.

Hey AC, I don't think there's anything you can fully do to eradicate the Black crazy ants on your own, so I think instead you should take all the lessons you've learned over the years about ant-keeping and apply the opposite. Yes, vacuum them up every move they make, continue to probe into the nest and shine lights and stress them out. Do everything in your power to keep the black crazy ant colony stressed and panicked all the time. That'll slow their growth, as stress does for ants. That's the best you can do, is stunt their growth and keep them stressed out so that hopefully our native colony of Marauder's can gain an advantage to build the numbers, sense the black crazy ants weakness, and deem an assault is viable. That's your best chance at getting rid of the BCA, is for your Marauders to do it for you, and you should do everything in your power to put the marauder's in the position to deem a war on the BCA to be viable and worth it, and stressing and weakening the horde, as well as supplementing and helping the marauder's grow is the best way to do that, if their colony gets large enough, they'll deem the tree stump is where they want to be, and they'll eradicate the weakened competition to do that if they have the resources to do so themselves.

@@CaucasianLopez based on the way it "flows", the eye spots, and the pointed end that eventually "flare out" AND especially the way it wrapped itself around the cricket im 65% sure its a hammerhead worm. They're extremely resilient, neurotoxic, speculatively immortal and have a tendency for cannibalism.

This is great, and educating on levels unfounded in the public schooling criteria could never achieve in their delusional ways. I am legit fascinated with the idea of this ecosystem even existing, for starters. Really cool idea I am now going to have to look into. I have ventured into salt water aquarium ownership in my early 20s. It was a really cool experience, one in which I would do quite differently at this point in my life. I am just finding this channel for the first time, so I am excited to check the channel out. Great start though, very cool video. The main reason I backed off any interests of trying out the ant farm setup was due to I did not think you could get the views that your snake camera was able to. That is awesome. I really think you should do something about the Black Crazy Ants. I know the idea of Pantdora is to see an ecosystem and how it works. BUT invasive species are ecosystem disrupters and aren't "natural" technically. I know you probably can't necessarily remove them completely but If you could vaccume them up you could disrupt them enough to keep them under control. For example that second hole int he stump seemed to house A LOT of brood and queens and if you could get something in that hole to suck them up you could really do some damage to them by removing a lot of egg laying queens and future queens/brood. They need a culling so they don't get out of hand.

Something you could do against the dark hoard is place objects into the vivarium for them to move into. Since they move often it should not be to hard. Once they do you can take the object out taking brood and ant queens with it effectively lessening there numbers. I know that you like the more peaceful options so there is one. But this could be pair with test tubing fire ants into key areas of the stump. Obviously make sure no fire ant queens are involved. With the new camera it would be easier to identify key areas where brood and queens are. This would also motivate them to move to possible extraction nests as well.

You said the crazy ants are nomadic, so removing them would just be simulating them moving elsewhere. No different than adding new prey insects simulating them moving in from surrounding areas. As for how vacuuming them would likely not get them all, it's true but if you kept at it you may eventually get all the queens and future queen's. If nothing else you could keep the numbers from overwhelming the system.

My thought was run a hose from the stump to sn enclosed tank with goodies, water etc and try to coax the ants into moving into the other tank for removal. Even if you didn't get them all it would be enough maybe to allow other ants to reestablish

I don't know if ants are like bees, and the workers make queens by feeding them royal jelly for a certain amount of time or if the ant queen herself has to lay new queen eggs. If the workers make new ant queens you have a perpetual mess.

I think an occasional vacuuming of the crazy ants is a good idea. Not to eradicate but to control them. Yes in real ecosystems, intrusive species are normal. But Pandora has limited space, when in the wild, native species would have room to just move away and expand.

I absolutely love your videos! I started watch in on episode three and ever since I have made it my goal to never miss one :) you’ve completely inspired me to try raising ants in one of my dormant fish tanks and build my own smaller ecosystems around my fish tanks and it has been so fun and so rewarding to watch yours and grow my own right along with you. Thank you for that 😊 can’t wait for the next episode

I think that baby worm thing is a leach, truly nasty, I remember them moving like that up the stalks of cattail plants. And if that's the case then yes, they are very carnivorous little freaks...

I would guess that, the way it moves looks like a leech to me. Although ive not seen a leech that colour before.

It was very tiny work but the shape as that look like but almost as parasite worm.

I know there are some leech species that live in the soil and wet forest floor in tropical climates, it may also be a young one. @@OMT988

I think you should actively try and vacume out as much of the crazy ants as possible. After 2 weeks of this still continue treatment as seen but perhaps add a new native ant species, perhaps a carpenter ant

The hatching of the cricket nymphs is like a miniature version of the hatching of sea turtles. I still suggest Banded Bullfrogs or Painted Toads to control the numbers of the black crazy ants if ever you can find some. The Banded Bullfrogs would burrow underground to sleep, but would emerge and sit by a trail ants and snatch up as many as they can. They are known to climb as well, so they can probably themselves higher up the tree stump each night to feed on the trail of ants. An added plus is that they'd also feed on any termite alates that would take flight, hereby also controlling their numbers.

Banded Bullfrogs are invasive so that would be good. But like most bullfrogs,i feel they may feed on more than just insects. They are cool frogs tho good colors and stuff but they are so rampant and invasive for a reason.

So about the Mantis: Not 100% sure, but I think the other mantis you caught is also a female. Also one thing you should know about mantises is that they like to be alone and are very territorial. So if you add a male and they would mate chances are the female could eat it before they could mate or, if they get to mate, the new generation of mantises could kill each other off (or their mother eats them as she is bigger). So you could add new mantises in the terrarium, but don’t be surprised if they Jill each other

Hey Mikey! If you do plan on removing the black horde, unfortunately, I think removing the stump is the only reliable course of action, we know that a large majority of the black horde are within that stump, and I think they should be moved before they run out of space and move in the soils or else where. Once the stump is removed, the ants either need to be culled or transferred to another man-made ecosystem (as they are invasive and can't be released). Most if not all wood used for terrariums are typically boiled to remove hazards which include bacteria, viruses, parasites, and other organisms to avoid unwanted introductions. My heart aches each time I see the black crazy ants as I know how destructive invasives can be from my classes, but at the same time, I understand that keeping them within pantdora can open a lot more questions and give us many answers in the scientific community if pantdora reaches an equilibrium with the black horde! That would be amazing! Best of luck to you, and amazing work!

This makes me feel like I’m watching early 2000’s NatGeo documentaries and I absolutely love it. You’ve taken not just my two most HATED insects (ants n termites)but also plenty of other insects I was afraid of or grossed out by and have made me completely fascinated! I’ve never done so many google searches on bugs before till this series. You’ve actually inspired me to do a similar version of what you are doing one day as it’s my dream to have an ecosystem vivarium like yours. You are really an inspiration and just thank you for making such incredible and well thought out content for us insect lovers!

You could do more than 1 vacuum, right? Vacuum that top hole everyday to keep the crazies numbers down. Because if you do nothing, they will just take over the whole place, then none of the other animals will have a nice place to live.

To help control the Black Crazy Ants, I feel picking off any queen eggs you happen upon could help for now. If the BCA really start causing trouble, I would go with the vacuum option. It's your vivarium, so intervening here and there should be okay.
