I completely transitioned from MBP and Mac Pro to my M1 iPad Pro after 20+ of using desktop. As professional Audio Engineer and Media company Founder/Director, I was able to do ALL my professional work for all my clients (big and small) on my iPad and I haven’t looked back, without any compromise in quality. None of my clients could tell the difference. It’s definitely changed my life and how I work day-to-day.

My laptop gave way about 1 month after I purchased my iPad 11 M2 pro. While taking my time to decide, I gradually started doing everything on the iPad. Some things are easier than others but with Logitech Slim Folio Pro, a multi-connection hub, external SSD and other peripherals, I don’t miss the laptop at all. It’s been 8 months.

I use my iPad Pro (12.9 M1) for 95% of my daily use. I’m a writer and painter, mostly. But there are a few apps that I need my MacBook Pro for: database development and web development. Neither app is available for iPad. As soon as those projects end, it will be ipad all the way. Thanks for the great iPad coverage through the years-I’ve been following you (silently) since long before 9to5. Looking forward to your future videos.

@@anthonyanthony2783 I’ll have to agree with Rory on this one. In English, while yes, prepositional phrases often have a determiner such as “the” or “a/an” before a noun, brand names or product names often do not require “the” before then. For example, “Available on iPhone” or “Compatible with Windows 10”.

As an IT Exec at a major global company, I personally made the switch to an iPad Pro M1 11” with the Brydge Keyboard then switched to an Apple Magic Keyboard. Day 1 - iOS 16 w/ stage manager made the switch possible. Don’t think I could’ve done it using normal app switching. 400 days later, I’m on iOS 17 and using Azure Remote Desktop for a few apps (ie Excel Pivots, Data manipulation options, etc. ). I’m using a wide angle Dell monitor with native USB-C and USB-A charging. Once the remote Logitech camera is supported, it’ll be a professional laptop replacement game changer. Would be nice if the computer continued to run whilst closed. I’ll never go back to 100% PC - in fact, I’m working on moving our company to mixed iPad / thin client VDI mode to have the greatest agility. Big thanks to this channel for helping convince me to make the switch - it’s been an amazing experience that has made my worklife beyond productive.

🐬 I had yo resort to only using my iPad Air for work when my MacBook was broken, and I can honestly say that it was challenging at first but you adapt quite fast and it ended up being a great experience getting everything that you would normally do on your Mac now having to do it on your iPad. I would easily go and do it again especially with Final Cut Pro on iPad. Makes life so much easier.

I think it’s come a long way. My biggest issues right now are when working on web apps on Safari. For example copy pasting is a pain, the text input box some times goes under keyboard settings widget, the auto correct doesn’t work on web apps. But when in the apple notes app or even MS word app these work fine, the mouse cursor changes shape when you want to highlight text for copy paste and the rest work very well.

I started out with an 2013 MacBook Pro and I loved it. Still have it. But with my hobbies, interest and work flow, I didn’t need another MacBook Pro but also the one i have was too old and clunky to use, so i went with an 11 inch m2 iPad. I loveeeeee it. No regrets. From KZfaq, to taking notes, to surfing the web and even a little gaming it runs so smoothly it’s crazy. I sometimes wonder how such a powerful computer is really just a tablet. I think i will eventually get a MacBook Air if my workflow changes a bit but im super happy with this purchase right now .

I know there are a ton of things I can do with it, and I haven't even scratched the surface, but so far it does what I want it to do and in the future I plan on using it for video editing once I get back into consistent uploads. I will also use it for FaceTime video - I like the bigger screen compared to my iPhone, and I don't like using FaceTime on my Mac.

I get that most of the commentary is for people that like the idea of the device replacing their laptop but the killer app is Procreate! I can’t draw on a MacBook Air directly on the screen no matter the configuration! Since that’s my main use case, when I have to answer emails, edit photos or videos it’s just more convenient to do it on the device that I spend the most time on. Love your stuff!🔥💪🏽👍🏾

I bought an M1 iPad Pro back when they came out. Got the Apple Pencil and a folio case to go with it. I'm in my 40s and thought about how much I missed drawing back in my school days. Ended up getting Procreate and a few other apps, but honestly, I'm too overwhelmed to dive into them. So many brush options. I used to be a pencil and paper drawer. Jumping into the digital art world is very intimidating, but I still want to do it. Just having a hard time actually trying to do it. So instead, I use my iPad as a big iPhone, basically. I much rather watch videos on it, rather than my phone, if not my 2014 MacBook Pro, which I should have replaced instead of buying the iPad. The MacBook though is for my work. Lots of spreadsheets, Slack, Zoom, and websites. Thought about trying to use the iPad for work instead of the MacBook, but I multitask so much with the MacBook + a 2nd display, I don't think I could make the iPad my go-to for work.

I got my 2018 iPad Pro back in May 2019, just before I started college. At first I used it a lot as my main computer, and I enjoyed it a lot. However, as my needs for a computer changed to become more demanding, the limitations of iPadOS began to bother me. To make things worse for the iPad Pro, the iPhone and Mac improved quite a lot over the past four years in both hardware and software. As a result, I use my iPad less and less, especially after going into content creation and graduated college. Overall, the iPad Pro for me is a great device. But it just hasn't improved fast enough for me to keep up with my changing demands for a computer while the Mac and iPhone did. I still have my iPad Pro, but only for when I need to occasionally doodle something which is rather rare because I'm not much of a drawer, even though it is something I'd like to learn.

🐬 Really awesome to see your perspective on this. I appreciate hearing about this from someone who has real experience with it, rather than someone who just switches for a week. It’s definitely one of those “it depends” answers when it comes to whether someone can use it as a full time machine. I love my 2020 iPad Pro, but I’m also an accounting major so certain apps aren’t quite there for me to switch. An app like Excel doesn’t have the capabilities for when I’m using things like power query or anything other than basic formulas. But that doesn’t mean i don’t LOVE my iPad, cause I really do. This is the ultimate secondary device for my MacBook. It allows me to work anywhere with two screens. Even universal control can be amazing when I’m using GoodNotes on my iPad while going through assignments on my laptop. I’d say that from a student perspective to be cautious to recommend students an iPad as their full time machine. While my initial major (marketing) would have worked with an iPad, my current one won’t. I think getting something like an MacBook Air is the best flexible option when there’s so much uncertainty. And then, if you’re able to, grab a refurbished iPad Air as a fantastic secondary option.

I moved to an 11’ iPad Pro from 2020 when the newer form factor came out. I was super excited cause I had a way outdated desktop and a laptop from 2007 so I needed a refresh. I was bummed when just a few months after I invested heavily into the 2020 ipad then the newer M1 came out and a thicker Smart Folio case so I was pasted by return, but over all it has done an amazing job for about 2.5 years then I had some more complicated work where I had to get a M1 MacBook Air. I STILL use the iPad MORE than my laptop some days. I would love to upgrade but not unless something comes out that convinces me to upgrade. USB-C and the functionary its a great primary device.

Have watched a lot of your "iPad Pro as laptop replacement" videos (and many others), and I have tried hard, really hard to get any normal workflow on the iPad as my main driver. But I can only see this work if you are a student or a person that doesn't need a laptop for normal web-based content management systems or workflows that uses docs and files for which you need "preview" by pressing the spacebar on the mac. Content creators who write scripts, edit photos and videos and use the device as a media consumption device can supposedly get everything done on an iPad. But, even though I am by no means a serious heavy user who needs coding or working with heavy spreadsheets, I work mainly on websites that I own from a management POV, so I rely fully on a web browser where I have generally 20+ tabs open (chrome on the mac), email with 10+ email accounts and allot of meeting apps such as Whatsapp, Zoom, Slack etc (Whatsapp sucks in the web browser). The main thing I don't understand is how people are using the iPad even with only the limited web browser capabilities. Chrome on the iPad totally sucks, it's way slower than on a macbook and doesn't support 50% of the features but also Safari doesn't load the admin portals that I need to work in. All in all, I wish Apple made the iPad run a version of MacOSx because until then it will still be only a light media consumption device.

The fact that the 12.9" base line, with the Magic Keyboard and the Apple Pencil, is short of 2100 in Italy means it absolutely makes ZERO sense whatsoever buying one if you are not loaded or an artist. I own an 11" M1 Pro with those two accessories and it is a beauty, but it's not a computer and it will never be, it's just too small. The 12.9", on the other hand, could replace a laptop if it were, say, 500 euros cheaper (more like the US price). I don't regret buying the iPad, nor the Pencil, but I do regret investing in the Magic Keyboard and trying to use the iPad as my sole device. I ended up buying and M1 air a few months later and I'm getting a MacBook Pro at the end of this year. Btw, the fun fact is I'm a damn student, I'm literally the target for that device, and it is absolutely insane how inaccessible it is. For 2k I can get a MacBook Pro refurbished or just upgrade to a new one for a little bit of money, like 15% increase in price. That price tag is okay in the US because you have an education system built around debt, so you can easily invest that kind of money if you are confident enough you will be able to pay back you tuition (I think is't called, not sure tho). In EU you either come from a rich family or you just can't afford an iPad Pro. I had two jobs for a year to be able to buy myself the 11" and the full combo was like 1.5k. Let's be real, iPads are only good for students (and a very small group of grown-ups that don't even make a market altogether) and students can't afford them... recommending an iPad Pro 12.9" is cool, I mean if I had one I'd be mad in love with it, but you have to be realistic guys... it's one of the worst value for money there is in the tech world by a mile, or at least it is outside the cozy bubble Apple keeps alive around the US.

Having a larger OLED screen, the camera being in the right place for video conference calls and Samsung Dex mode have completely resolved all the issues I used to have with the iPad Pro. I don’t have a computer, and use my ps5 for gaming. For my use case it is 90% of the way there. Just a slightly larger display. The only time it feels a little cramped is when digital painting in Split View, and having a reference photo in procreate. The video editing apps I use are Davinci resolve, and Final Cut. Just get some of the weird kinks worked out with the files, and some weird stuff in resolve and Final Cut, and it will be the perfect device for me. I already don’t feel the need to ever go back to getting an actual Mac or laptop. Here’s hoping that the next one is everything I hope it to be. Thanks for the great videos and reviews.

I'm using an 2021 iPad Pro 12.9 as my main productive device as engineering student and it's just perfect for me because it's able to do roughly everything a MacBook Air can do, with the versatility of a tablet (with the Apple Pencil). I can't recommand something else for a scientific student

Have an Alienware X-15 laptop for gaming. A Dell i5 laptop for journalism. A 13 Pro Max for photos/video. But my fav device (prob 55%-60% of all digital use) is my 5th Gen M1 IPad Pro 12.9 w/Smart Keyboard.

I have a 12.9 iPad pro and a M1 Max Pro...and the iPad is definitely a supplemental device for me - I prefer to use my Mac for just about everything that I can. It's so aggravating to run into a webpage that doesn't run correctly from the iPad...the iPad is amazing for playing in the band (music stand) and for taking notes/writing. For watching youtube I generally prefer the mac because of how it sits in my lap and the superior speakers - and this is even though I have the folio keyboard for the iPad Pro. 🐬

Like you said, the hardware is just perfect. My iPad Pro 12” M2 1TB SSD is doing great. But… iPadOS is just so limiting. As a developer, I really, really, would love to use my iPad as my main computer. But Apple makes it so hard to love this device. The reason for purchasing my iPad Pro M2 was it to be my main computer. But until this day after a year and a lot of retries to like it again, I would not buy it again. I would go for a Macbook. I mostly use my iPad Pro to watch video’s, my email and writing documents by hand or by keyboard. But at the price I paid for this device and Apple keeps limiting it via iPadOS, it is too much and too high. And the price, for the Magic Keyboard which is a great piece of hardware but with _no_ function keys, is also completely insane. Period. For that price alone I bought a Logitech MX Keys Mini, a Magic Trackpad and a solid metal magnetic stand.

I'll think about buying the iPad the day Apple allows installation of 3rd Party Softwares in it ‼ Without it it's just a limited restricted form of potentially powerful hardware ‼ It has a very powerful and capable Hardware that could have been an awesome touch screen and pencil compatibile 2-in-1 MacBook! Or "MacPad" ‼ I really miss Steve Jobs, he would have fixed this dilemma for Apple, the way Apple got rid of iPod as iPhone become capable of being an iPod and much more by itself ‼

Unfortunately that is the key. Yeah your big name apps will have iPadOS apps, but a lot of "creatives" will need access to apps that aren't available on the iPad. I actually decided to just get my wife the Asus ROG Flow Z13 even though she is all about Mac and Apple. First of all you can get the 2022 version for $1199, second of all you can install any application you want. After seeing that the new iPad Pro uses the M2 I even asked my wife if she wanted one for a "mobile computer", unfortunately I saw it still used a stupid OS, so it was a no go.

Great video. Yeah I have a M1 iPad Air and tbh, honestly what’s so important that a regular person can’t do on a iPad that they would on a Mac. I’m in college, anything with the web browser works amazing, it’s fast, tons of useful apps, great pencil options, it can literally emulate your laptop, phone, and notebook all in one. I don’t even use the Magic Keyboard (I think it’s a gimmick) and I still get a very good faux laptop experience. Get a Logitech k380, get a good case that you like, a mouse, a $30 Apple Pencil off of Amazon, and a paper feel screen protector and your all set.

After having used the iPad OS17 Beta for a few weeks I'm FINALLY starting to see the potential for the iPad as my main computer. It still leaves a bad taste in my mouth to think of the intentional hobbling of the OS for all of these years as Apple apparently agonized about not wanting to undercut Mac sales and to make the iPad a third buy after an iPhone and Mac. Nonetheless, the iPad (iPad Pro specifically) is more fun to use than my Mac, kind of like a Ferrari vs. a trusty minivan, though it's becoming more of a Model X now. The Files app is also the biggest roadblock for me still, it's so much slower to use and less flexible than Finder, what's "on my iPad" vs. iCloud Drive is also a frequent point of confusion. If I was really deliberate about it I could take the time to develop a workflow that would keep my files organized, mostly using an external drive for the larger files and iCloud Drive for the more current-use stuff. I use MS Word a lot, and mandatory subscription on the iPad aside, it's not the same software as on a Mac, which matters a lot for the quite precise translating and editing work I do, hopefully that will improve. I'm excited to give Final Cut on the iPad a go once my M1 iPad comes in. Besides that it will come down to deliberately organizing my workflow and trusting that with time things become automatic and you don't have to reinvent the wheel for certain tasks that are easy on Mac. I know it's not Apple's thing, but the iPad Pro could really use another USB-C port now that they're opening things up with cameras. All that said, the iPad is still more of "super iPhone" for me than a MacBook replacement. I'd still recommend an Air for most people getting one new main computer. I'm excited for the future of the OS though and I agree that we're heading towards some kind of fusion with Mac OS, half of the apps in my MacBook dock are cross-platform already. 🐬

My M1 Air 5 plugged into an external monitor has been a game changer. External mouse+keyboard too. The only thing that’s annoying is that if I’m watching a movie or episodes and won’t need the iPad’s screen, I can’t turn the screen off like a clam-shell laptop. I have the keep the iPad screen on no matter what to keep my monitor’s screen displaying iPadOS. Potentially leading to screen burn-in. Display tech has improved compared to decade ago but the chances of screen burn-in is never 0% 👀

Back in the early 2010's I had a power surge take out my PC, I couldn't afford to replace it, but I had a first generation iPad. I remember getting an Apple Bluetooth keyboard for that and using it as my computer for several months while I was building up money to build another PC. This was the very early days of the iPad, and even back then I was surprised by how much I could get done on one. There were definitely some things that I had to work around and figure out to get what I wanted to done, but I'd been doing a lot in the mobile space already by that point so it wasn't that big a deal to me. I've never had the Pro, but I do still have an iPad, (8th gen) And I know now it would be even easier to just use that if I had to. So I'd imagine with the expanded capabilities of the Pro models it's just not a big deal at all to use one as your main PC if you're so inclined. But yeah, the one place where it all falls apart is cost. Let's say I was going to be traveling and needed just one machine that was small, light, and would be my workhorse while I was away. The iPad Pro wouldn't even be in the running. It's simply too expensive to get it with enough storage and kitted out enough to support me and what I do. (photography, video editing, gaming, etc.) Getting something like a Macbook Air with larger internal storage would make a lot more sense money wise. However, if the iPad Pro ever came down in price, or they made an iPad Air with more storage at a more reasonable price, then I would definitely consider one again.

As someone (student) with both, I prefer using the ipad pro for the display and 120hz, lightness, comfort, but sometimes I gotta go with m2 mb air 1. Battery on mb air is better and My pro Usually dies before the end of the day (so I usually use it more for handwritten notes and less as a computer) 2. The ipad can be.. finnicky? Google docs screen can glitch out, the buttons can be unresponsive. MS office is even worse. Sometimes mouse inputs wont work as intended and you need to use the touchscreen (excel) which can be annoying 3. Gaming, I love me some emulators and its a lot easier on mac

Have been a iPad Pro+Magic Keyboard+Pencil user, since 2020. Trust me, I sold my laptop off after experiencing the iPad setup. You want to type, reply to emails? Do that with the Magic Keyboard. You want to sign documents? Apple Pencil is the answer. I have never thought that this little setup of mine would be so beneficial to me that I will completely ditch my MacBook. Can’t be more satisfied with the versatility this bring to the table.

I got an 11 inch M2 cellular model for school. I know it's overkill but I'm the type of person to use something till it's last breath. So far it's quite useful for classes and other things. I have a windows laptop and android phone, so I use a USB c thumb drive to transfer files from between the devices. And it works well. The ipad gives me enough performance to finish my work. I have to admit that part of the reason why I got it instead of the air was the 120hz display. I'm waiting for the ipados 17 stage manager update so I can use the ipad just like a computer.

I’d say the most tedious thing about iPad as my only computer is not being able to drag and drop items to websites like when I upload to google drive or Shutterfly etc it’s a lot easier on a computer. Other than that I have been using iPad as my only computer since July 2020 and it’s been awesome. I’d say only downside is only having one port I worry when using hubs someday it may ware out then I have no way of connecting peripherals. I barely ever use the Magic Keyboard I mostly use a tablet style case cause it’s easier to work with when editing photos. Plus the Magic Keyboard doesn’t seem very safe for iPad with exposed sides.

I think you pretty much nailed it towards the end. You can pay an awful lot for an iPad Pro setup with keyboard and trackpad that JUST ABOUT suffices as a computer, or pay half that for a full-day Mac. It’s a really tough sell, but I suppose that Apple’s answer to that is now the iPad Air, which like the MacBook Air does basically everything that its Pro sibling does, just not quite as well.

I had the dream to replace a MacBook with an iPad cause i like to have a convertible setup like for consuming KZfaq, Netflix etc an iPad is a great device especially on the go. That’s why i ordered the iPad Pro back in 2018. To be able to get the work done, i got the Magic Keyboard as well. A few years and WWDC with iPadOS updates later, it has improved a lot but i think it is still a way of workarounds. The file management at first, goes along with pro apps usage like Photoshop, LR, FCPX but still working on office stuff (copy, pasting, working on sheets or presentations) it is not as simple as on Mac. I am tired of using workarounds so i started using my Mac more often what wasn’t my real intention. I still want to get rid of a MacBook but i don’t want to go the extra steps only because its an iPad.

However, a MacBook or a PC is still recommended in case you need to reset and restore your data on your iPad. That’s according to me the inconvenient. Otherwise and despite the lack of storage, you can use it an iPad as your main computer. 😊

I like it for quickly being able to withe emails, sign a contract, sketch up an idea or work in a spreadsheet while one the road and being online without having to tether. It’s not replacing my laptops but somehow it improves my life just enough to justify the steep price point. I am super frustrated with the front facing camera placement thought. It makes it completely useless for video calls.

I guess iPad is still for what Jobs had shown us - sitting in front of a computer less. For some, add drawing. If it can be the only computer - great, but for me it can only replace a notebook - Macs share screens nicely. I also appreciate the new desktop like features of iPadOS, but for me the best multitasking on iPad is reaching for another iPad.
