The old guys will forget more than some of the young pups will ever learn. I been driving since 1970, so I can empathize with Grandpa. No turbo, no A/C, no power steering, tiny sleeper, tag axle, and yet he made a living for 34 years. Chrome and doo dads don't make money - workin it does ... Happiness is healthy, happy grand-kids :-)

This interview was top notch. This c.o.e. was based on the FORD C series city cab. Int'l also made a high c.o.e. based on their VCO cab that Hendrick- son also used. The Hendrickson had a 12V- 71 in it to pull highway doubles & sat higher than the I-H. FORD built a prototype of it's high c.o.e. for P.I.E. with a set back front axle.

I was gonna say year 1965. I remember when Ford first put these on the road. They didn’t have many over the road diesels then just heavy duty vocational trucks with gasoline engines. F series “Big Jobs”.

Top shelf. My kind of guy. Chrome don't take ya home ! Back in 05 I had a wreck. Totaled my truck and trailer. Was hauling livestock. Had a 69 R model Mack out in the weeds that I used to pull a lowboy trailer with. Drug it out, put rod's and mains in it. Switched it to 12 volt. Then bought a 82 Chamberlin 46 footer. Triple decker to boot. I put 90 thousand miles on that rig in 11 months. Best time I ever had trucking. Ran 4 states with the ol girl. Never let down. The biggest mistake I ever made was selling that old truck. ( Was running a 1998 IH Eagle and a 98 Barrett 50 foot possum belly in the crash.)

Single countershaft RT-96 with the range actuator on the outside.I loved that sound of the 15 degree tilt NH220. Mine had no power steering too! It was an old Maislin Bros. truck that ran out of Montreal to all lanes south. I didn't buy it and ended up working for a rendering co.out of Ellenburg, N.Y., driving a 1964 White 9000. It wasn't fun anymore so I hung it up six years ago. The final straw was when companies started putting driver facing cameras in the truck so they can see and hear what you're doing. We're not children and don't need company big brothers watching us. But generally speaking it was a good 40 year ride but only 8 was long haul, the rest being regional or local.

We use to have a C850 John Bean/FMC at the Fire Department that I was with. I loved driving that Pumper! Great truck!

The old two story Falcon. Several of the first fire apparatus that I operated were the Ford C cabs. I'll never forget when a young kid on the department rolled out primary engine. She was a beauty. The kid tried to take a 20 or 25 mph curve too fast and those pesky laws of physics caught up with him. Really like these and the Louisville Liners. Just before I got out of it they were buying the international and freightliner chassis apparatus -- quality has really gone to pot. All the crappy plastic and plastic fasteners. Rattles and squeaks -- it's truly sad --
