you can add 'no-see-ums' screen over your vents to keep smaller critters in / out.

I have tips for vents! … drill holes with a step bit, lubricated with dish soap to get a smooth cut without melting plastic… use fine mesh pantyhose with rubber grommets and push the pantyhose through the hole with the grommet!

Awesome video! Thank you. I decided to bite the bullet and switch to the Iris weathertight bins about 6 months ago. I have over 150 now. Totally agree that they are the best. I have almost no fungus gnats now and it even isolates mites. Also, your invaders are probably not transporting themselves to other bins. They are likely hitchhiking on you. Lol Lately I have been finding my corcyraem everywhere. It coincides with a population explosion in their bin. And I must thank you for your channel. It is one of my favorites.

Iris are legit a hidden gem in the community. They are what I keep my baby snakes in, they’re the only tub that’s completely snake proof. Along with sterilite gaskets and ezy gaskets, but the Iris just look so sharp and neat with the black Only con is the price for sure. For snakes it’s an incredible price compared to buying a bunch of glass tanks that you’ll be upgrading your snake from every few months. But for isopods it’s super expensive 😂 most of mine are legit still in sterilite 6q shoeboxes. But one day when I have spare money I’ll definitely upgrade them to Iris.

With that much ventilation, you must be watering those bins all the time. I have a bin with just two rows of 7 holes along the top, it's about half or a third of the size of yours, and I have to wet down the moist end every 2 or 3 days, and I only have a slight draft in the room, a ceiling fan set on low.

for vents. 5/8 spade bit, let the tip go in on it's own and when the spade contacts rock the drill in a circular motion. for the mesh just order a 200ct of 1 inch stainless steel pipe screens (the smoking kind) cheap as dirt and the mesh is also much finer. dollar store hot glue gun and glue. you're welcome.

A step drill dose a better job and is less likely to split the plastic
@LeslieAnn713
@LeslieAnn713 Жыл бұрын
A door drill bit works as well just put painters tape where you want to drill the hole so the plastic doesn’t crack and start slowly that’s how I make the ventilation holes on all my bins isopods crickets dubias ect when I drill the hole I sand around the hole to give a smooth finish then I hot glued the screen in the inside so I don’t see the hot glue I just paint around it in the outside to cover up the glue I’m just to picky perfectionist it will kill me to see the glue through the plastic on level 4 you can hot glue a piece of screen inside the vent

Did the stainless vents hold up in any of the bins high humidity vs low humidity? I hear over time all stainless will rust just depends what will determine how long it takes.

Silicone doesn't adhere to some plastics very well. How has it held up after 2 years now? Has the silicone lost its bond? It seems 2 way tape might be a better bet?

What type of isopods would you recommend for a high humidity terrarium? It's made from a 55 gal aquarium that's 13"w x 48"L x 21"h it is glass topped with 2 plexi panels that stay open 1/4" for ventilation when needed and to access for maintenance. Also do you sell and ship your isopods? Are you on Facebook?

So I have the same bins from The Container Store (IRIS on Amazon), and want to set up some good ventilation. Those screen inserts are cool (and pretty cheap online), but the screen looks big enough to allow fungus gnats to get in. I'm experimenting with some material that can be inserted in the vent to keep the little bastards at bay. I found this medical tape, which is what they use from those 32oz flightless fruit fly container tops, but it doesn't allow much air exchange. I'm sure air is passing thru it just fine, but you can't feel a breeze thru it, so I'm not sure if it'll work for circulation. So then I tried buying a super-cheap air filter at Wal-Mart (size is irrelevant), and found one that's made of a paper-thin blue poly material. I took it home, cut out a circle, and stuck it in the vent. This seems to work really well. You can feel air move if you blow into the vent, but it's a tight enough matting that I think it'll keep out fungus gnats and fruit flies. I secured it into the vent with a little hot glue around the seem. For my roach bins (which are the bigger tubs, same style), I am using 4" vents. I found the roaches will try to remove the filter media, so I backed it with some steel screen and reapplied the hot glue. Also, fun fact, the larger bin is twice the footprint of the smaller 19 qt bins, so two smaller bins nest perfectly on top of the bigger one. Might seem like a dumb selling point, but I'm a little OCD, and the fact that they stack securely in different sizes makes me happy. You can even nest a bigger box on the bottom, then two smaller, and then a large on top, and they feel very secure.

Sorry for the massive delayed response. Yes fungus gnats are a constant nuisance especially with the amount of vivariums as well as the pod bins. But regardless I absolutely love the rigidity of these bins compared to anything else. Please keep me posted if this blue stufff works out. The fungus gnats don’t bother me as much as escaping pods getting into other bins. My Merulanella sp. Tricolours I constantly find in the floor so I’m desperately trying to find something to stop them from getting out. The surgical tape might work for them as the entire top Of the enclosure is still wide open. Thank you very much for your comments. I love that we can all share our successes with each other. Take care

@@themadaquarist yeah, I already bought a bunch (12x of the 19qt, and 24x of the 8qt). I fix each one with 2 of the round insert vents, with filter material inserted. If you have an email, I can send you pictures of how I set them up.

also I've never broken a bin drilling with a spade bit, well, those dollar store shoebox maybe I've broken a few but nothing sterilite quality or better. but it's so much faster than heating and melting you can afford the smaller vent size and just drill a few extra holes

The ones that do escape and end up in other colonies can they reproduce with that colony and ruin the strain??
@themadaquarist
@themadaquarist 3 жыл бұрын
Only if closely allied species. Me it’s more the concern that they are getting out and in numbers. As well the risk of any issues passing between colonies is greatly reduced if contained. No cross contamination
