I'm surprised you don't have your own tv show on PBS. You are a master at furniture restoration. Your knowledge and craftsmanship is incomparable to any other craftsman on KZfaq. I also love how you show animals nature at the beginning of your videos. It reminds me of a magazine format similar to the CBS Sunday morning show. Excellent work!

Repairs to antiques don't need to be hidden-they're part of the history. Every scratch, dent and repair, or update, tells a story. Great job updating the bed.

That is a very 'european' attitude. Americans usually want it sanded down and redone so it looks brand new, rather the 1, 2, 3, ...6 hundred years old! I was selling my house, built in the 1890's. Two couples were quite interested. One was from Germany and they really loved each and every crack, or scar in the hardwood floors, the squeek in the front stairs, etc. The build up of patina over time is something you just can't fake. The house was 114 years old and was 95% original. It was in great shape but it was 114 years old!!! The other couple, Americans, wanted to grind the floors down to flawless wood. So they would look like brand new! Wanted to repair the plaster that had some cracks, and move the back staircase, etc, etc. They wanted the limestone facade and the pillors on the front porch but they want a flawless, modern interior. Which would have ruined the houses character! It's warmth and that feeling you got of it wrapping its arms around you, keeping you warm and safe! They wanted to remove the comfortableness of an old house that new ones just don't ever have! I am always reminded of my house whenever I watch 'It's a Wonderful Life', when Jimmy Stewart runs up the stairs shouting about his wonderfully comfy, drafty, old house! (Mine wasn't drafty!) So I was glad the American couple didn't buy the house. They would have ruined it completely! The people who did buy it have only semi-ruined it! Which was heart breaking to see, but it is 'their' house! For 114 years people lived in it as it was built. And were happy! The new people had windows removed and bricked up with new windows put in now openings! They invited me in to see it, I got as far as the foyer and "Oh, is that the time? I'm already late meeting people 3 blocks away! I'm sorry but I need to go! Next time!!!???" They had put in a powder room next to the vestibule! Ripping out the inlaid wood border! And had painted the wood paneling and molding going up the mainstair case! It was so upsetting I couldn't bear to see what else they had done!!! And ruined! For 114 years people lived comfortably without a 'powder room' on the first floor! Not next to the front door and 2 steps from the bottom of the main stairway! If you needed a bathroom there was a nice one on the 2nd floor. With plenty of privacy--- far away from the public rooms. Not 15 feet from the living or dining rooms! And they took out the boiler and radiators. They needed a forced air furnace! I didn't want to see what was chopped up or taken out for the ductwork--- it is a 5 story house! I was quite literally sickened by their "improvements"!!! But it is their house now. It is sad to see original housing modified like that. If it needs that much modification perhaps the house really isn't for you and you should keep on looking! Padding side rails hopefully isn't as egregious as modifying a comfortable and historic home! Hopefully! My apologies if it is!

For non-historically important furniture, or a car, or a powertool, if you want to honor the original craftsman, then IMO you should think about what he would want. I think a lot of times they’d say, “scrape off the rust and repaint it so it looks like the car I put my heart and soul into,” or “fix the cracks and fill the holes, and make it look like the thing I built!” But for an old house that’s in good shape and has nice details, yeah, don’t be the annoying modernizers. Go buy a new house. Although a new furnace sounds reasonable. Maybe they used those skinny tubes.)

This is the english attitude. The european attitude is the same as the american. They sand down 200 year old furniture to bare wood and french polishing it to a mirror like sheen. The antique piece looks plastic coated. I'm simply disgusted by their approach.@@PsulOrtiz

I like that you kept the old rails and extended them. It keeps the history of the piece and shows the changes you've made on top of the historical ones. Edit: and after all that work, i like the colour-match. And i love that you had the altitude to redo what you'd originally did. So easy to just run with ego and ignore our own misjudgments.

@@johnsonrestoration The construction is very similar. The hardware is like what is installed in this bed. I can’t believe how solid this bed is built and it’s likely to last another 180 years. Very weird to think that people who lived in the 1700s might have slept in it! We sleep very well however! We also have an empire sofa from the early 1800s and that too is built like a tank! The quality and workmanship of furniture, and houses as well, sadly have declined. It’s really nice to see you take great care in your work.

We all know that matching the new wood to the old wood was almost inpossible, I'm so glad you decided to scrap it, it was deffenatly way off, but I love the way it ended up looks great, amazing job as usual, I'm a bit color blind I'd never have been able to match it that well, not even close.

Get your shoes off of my white carpet!! Wait... white carpet?? How do you pull that off?!?! I think I've seen these before but gladly watched them again. I especially like when you sorta mess because we get to what you do about it. Very enjoyable! Our chickens in the south have no concept of snow. And won't take step one on to it.

Thanks! I'm glad you don't mind seeing them again. Our chickens never want to walk on the snow, but I shovel a trail for them and once they get out there and get going they're fine with it

Thanks for this re-look at two favourites. I had to laugh, when you put on the sideboards of the first bed and I was thinking - "surely he isn't going to leave those two black ends there? I don't remember it being that bad?" When lightening struck the film and we had you back, "facing reality!" I've worked on projects like that (not in woodwork, but in stitching) and I've been hoping and hoping something would be better than I know it is then comes the moment when you know you will be "frogging" (rip-it, rip-it)😁

Hi. It is very interesting to watch you work on the old furniture, turning them into great survivors from the past with your excellent skills. Sometimes you refer to your books, when dating and identifying different objects that you get into the shop. Is it possible that you can share a photo of your book collection, or possibly make a video about it? Best regards, Harald, from Norway

Thomas Johnson...the color tone master!!! I have an heirloom sleigh bed from the early 20th century. It is a beautiful mahogany piece. I have repaired one of the rails a few times: first, replacing the piece the mattress sets on, then gluing the cracked rail, and the rail is also bowed out. It seems to work fine. But, I have another set of frame rails on my Amazon Wishlist.

Wet difficult color match, but I think you did a beautiful job. I also agree with some of the other comments that believe in the acceptance of a visible repair, it just added history and character. In my opinion that bed is lucky to have landed on your bench, as you always show respect to the original.
