Zack Hyman just gave a brutally honest interview about the NHL and how he feels like dangerous plays are being allowed to occur. We'll discuss that, the Edmonton Oilers vs LA Kings game, and more on today's NHL hockey video!

Edler should’ve retired quite a few seasons ago….This is just an embarrassment. If he would’ve ended a players career like Mcdavid or Hymans while doing this sort of thing all while being a 6th defensemen at this point….He would become the most hated player of all time. Which goes beyond the game at that point. That’s something dirty players never think of. And it’s the reason guys like Cooke and Torres are still hated by most to this day.

Edlers knee goes no where but straight and mcDavid tried to squeeze through even the announcers who were tnt so national said it wasn’t dirty but at game speed it looked bad. The refs made the right call. McDavid watch where you are skating as his back was turn away before he went back towards edler and Anderson Dolan. McDavid has been kicked out of a game against the kings before for his cheap play. Don’t watch this guys edited KZfaq clip for a real look. The game had many angles and the broadcasters who are ex players said the refs were right but these internet refs are right 😂😂😂. The game is always chippy against rivals who played in the playoffs year before. How about mcDavid cheap cross check that’s not dirty hitting someone in the back with your stick. It's tough. I kinda agree with edler doing this often, but I am watching the MD hit and it's borderline at best. MD moved at the last sec and there was another king right on top of him. So I don't know. You can't take contact out of hockey. Players don't necessarily have to have a cheap shot happen to get really hurt. I think leaving it up to the refs to always make a determination if a hit was bad play def has major probs, or fk go to replay always is going to be annoying. So it def is a conversation to have when an enforcer did have some def pull in the game in the past.

@@thedigitalgraffiti3396 I cheer for the Jets, but Edmonton is easily my second favourite Canadian team. A proud history there for sure. And yeah, I have never seen Hyman take a lazy shift. And considering how high he sets the bar for himself on ice, he's an even better human being off-ice. You have a really special player here. Maybe not the generational talent that McDavid and even Draisaitl are, but it's an easy choice who I cheer for when my team gets eliminated. Of course, I would _prefer_ to be cheering for mine, but if not Winnipeg I would love to see the Oilers being Lord Stanley back home.

@@Mike_Jones68 Yeah, I am not in favour of taking contact out. But some guys are pros at making it look accidental when they take liberties. Now if those liberties include plays that are on the borderline of interference and there is no real threat of long-term injury, I take a "let them play" approach. A knee injury on the best player in the league is bad for McDavid, the Oilers, and the game. There should be no allowance no matter which players are involved though.

You could have also added in the fact that the whole reason Kane isn't playing right now is because of a dirty slew foot which led to his injury. I feel like the NHL cracking down on the Enforcer mindset has caused players to just play dirty with things like slew foots, subtle knee on knees, and other dirty plays. It may not be outright and overtly dangerous, but it's getting guys seriously hurt. I'm not saying we need to bring in Goons, the refs need to do their jobs, and the DPS needs to start being able to review this stuff after the fact and dishing out meaningful punishments, especially in cases like Kane where the guy is now out for months.

Habs, the WHA Winnipeg Jets (the only club team undefeated & by Russia,-not Philly! 2+ games min.) and the Russian Red Army teams changed, & saved, IMO, pro hockey. Larry Robinson, +722, 958 points career, never saw him lose a fight, saw him literally pick up 2 players by their collars, like a couple sacks of potatoes. Nobody messed with Gordie Howe, twice. Knee to knee hit is what ended Cam Neely's career. Nurse's response was correct and I would've liked to have seen a line brawl from EDM in response to this flagrant attempt at ending McDavid's career! Maybe we need a new rule for this! Maybe suspensions for knee to knee hits.

Dude, you are spot-on with your take. Of course, Kings fans are gonna say this was Mcdavids's fault, like come on. Edler is a dirty player and the fact that he did the exact same thing to Hyman just proves it. This kind of knee-on-knee hit should be severely punished. You could end a guy's career this way. Not cool.

It's almost like as they have forced out fighting, enforcers, hits and created softer game. It has brought out the dirtier cheap plays, knee on knees, slashes to the wrist and slew foots.

Crosby has never had an enforcer and lost close to 2 full seasons due to dirty head shot from Steckel in Outdoor Classic game. Still an all-time great but would be further up the list for sure. Would presence of enforcer have prevented such a play ? Be interesting to ask Crosby and Gretzky that question.

Knee on knee and slew foots need to be treated on par with head injuries imo. All of them have a much higher statistical correlation with season ending and career ending injuries than other plays.
@Silenceaverted

That is not a very similar play. The Toronto Vancouver hit was clearly knee on knee. Mcdavid trying to evade the hit is what led to the knee on knee contact. Another example of how it’s not similar is the knee on knee hit Doughty got injured from last season against the Stars.

I agree with Zach Hyman, what Alex Edler did to McDavid was disgusting, and the NHL needs to do something with more severe punishments for these cheap shot hits that certain players in the league are commiting

Pretty simple: if you are called for a penalty that hurts a player - and the NHL agrees - that player is out for as long as the player he injured! SIMPLE

I feel like hits that are more risky for injuries should have tougher penalties, because potentially ruining someone's career should be punished. The only caveat is I don't want it to become a soccer situation where people start faking injuries all the time, It's a fine line to balance and has to be handled intelligently.

Any team that has 1 true superstar like a Connor McDavid on their team should ABSOLUTELY have a true blue Enforcer on the team as well. Like a Ryan Reaves or Zhedeno Chara, or even a "Big Rig" Jamie Oleksiak. If you don't have the Enforcer you will have to deal with players who are dirt like Tom Wilson, Brad "The Roach" Marchand or "IDK His first name" Edler taking cheap shots at said stars. It's just expected. On the Kraken we got a young up and comer named Matty Beniers who's already in rookie of the year talks. Someone on the Minnesota Wild took a run at him and missed but there was a fight immediately after when Jamie Oleksiak took his young forwards back. You MUST HAVE these enforcers on your team to watch the back of superstars

There was a time the NHL policed itself and as much as I like the art and precision of hockey and am not so into the fighting it's part of the game and these refs are next to useless anyway. Like back in the "Legion of Doom" days Lindros was so strong and fast he'd break guys ribs with his cross checks and stuff like that but then 2 concussions later (or however many)..like the Scott Stevens hit..I mean most would say it's just hockey but I thought then and still do it was basically the league self-policing itself, there are other examples too but we all know what happened to Lindros...long recovery....he became a kinder gentler version of himself and though he remained a great player, or at least a very good one he was NEVER the same.

I have watched this in slowmo 100 times now. This is a hockey play. This is a physical game. These things happen. I see no intentional extention of the leg. No purposeful movement of the leg to catch McDavid. The only movement is him turning his leg sideways to throw on the brakes. Truth is part of what makes McDavid so good is his agility. Well when you try to be agile to avoid hits you can sometimes put yourself in a dangerous situation. The difference between a player like McDavid and Patrick Kane (in his prime) is Kane wasn't wasn't aggressive as McDavid. He didn't make as many high risk plays and avoided contact altogether. McDavid is not afraid to skate into dangerous situations and try to juke through defenders. McDavid plays a dangerous game of hockey. It's part of what makes him so good, but also the reason he's going to suffer many injuries in his career. There was nothing dirty here. People are using Edler's history to try and paint him as purposely putting the knee there. McDavid made a dangerous play, and made it even more dangerous by trying to jump around him. The real question is, do you want McDavid to adapt his play the the NHL, or do you want the NHL to adapt to McDavid's play? Should hitting be removed to allow for more skillful play or should it be protected and skillful players need to be more careful?

I agree. They should not bubble wrap McDavid. But when he draws 5 or 6 penalties a game, the refs should start calling more of them. He’s usually moving at such a high speed, it doesn’t take much to trip him up and it can be more dangerous.

If you watch in slow motion, yes it is true that Mcdavid moves, but Edler's knee and leg are out in front of his shoulder to begin with, and then he also turns his leg and sticks it out to keep up with Mcdavid's change in direction
