The ruins of Bering Hill are undoubtedly the most fascinating place on the mostly abandoned island of Adak, Alaska, and exploring them was like walking back in time into the Cold War era. Here, you'll find the officer's main gym, the local movie theatre, the old Baskin Robbins (along with a few crumbling restaurants and pizza cafes), the olympic-sized pool, and the stunning Bering Hill Chapel.
In 1997, the United States Navy officially pulled out of Adak, Alaska, shuttering the remote Naval Air Base that was set up to monitor Soviet aggression during the Cold War. Today, the island sits mostly abandoned and forlorn, with only 33 residents remaining out of a former population of 6000.
