Also, you get slightly different view of the country than just by visiting Budapest (i.e. there are generally more pastry shops than regular bars, zander is much more available than anywhere else I've been, Hungary is noticeably cheaper than it's neighbouring countries, railway service is awesome and affordable). We were about 40 students exchanging 2 buses to get there, carrying the big goulash pot and stove with us. At the end of the day, after crawling through all those caves and rowing in the boats, we stayed around the stove while the hosts were cooking the best goulash stew I ever ate. Lots of drinking and singing happened to determine the goulash to boil faster. Margit island is a huge park that's nice to walk around. So when an average hungarian who doesn't live in Budapest or Debrecen sees a person of other etnicity he or she is going to stare at her or him since this might be the first and last encounter with literally anyone thats not a hungarian or a gypsy. It's not out of malice most of the time. And old people who lived during communist regimes in some village who travel to a big city to shop are definetely going to find an asian weird. Living in Hungary for 17 years now (since I was born) and I love Budapest, we moved to the city when I was 4. I grew up here and not even as a girl did it ever feel unsafe. The public transport system could and should be improved if you're living here, but for a single visit it's just fine. I'm attending highschool right now and all opportunities are there to choose from and I enjoy each day of my life here! Glad to see the City Park each morning and afternoon and have a good look at the centre before going home to the edge of the 16. district.

The public transportation is actually among the best ones in the world. Yes, sometimes it is a bit dirty, and the vehicles are worn off, but you can literally get to anywhere, on 3 different routes, and it is super cheap. We, ppl living in Budapest do not know how priviliged ir our public transport, just take a look at Rome for example, their solution is tragic and expensive.

@@Hellenic_arctic_state Why are you writing hateful comments about Romania being better and downgrading Hungarians into evil people? Like, if Hungary is worse than Romania you wouldn't need to repeat it over and over again. In history, it was inevitable to stop warmongering rulers from doing what they want. They usually expanded for 'their own good' and did not care about the casualties from both sides and the pressure that remains. Hungary did bad things, but let's be honest, EVERY COUNTRY DID BAD THINGS (led by evil leaders), even Romania. Whole nations hate each other because of some inviduals' decision and influence from the past. Other's actions can create unnecessary hate towards each other. History is meant to be learned so that we can decide wisely about the future. We Hungarians were depicted as an evil nation when Hungarian leaders did things normal to that age. Worldpowers influenced us, controlled us, divided us and labelled us. We were just living our own lives, but leaders decided to break our peace. We wanted freedom, justice, and were labelled. Some of our ancestors did things and cursed their descendants by their actions. We don't have to hate each other. I'm bored that Hungarians are labelled as the bad guys. We want to live a life just like others. I don't hate Romanians, I could only hate leaders decisions who are heroes to that nation while a villain to the other. I don't hate Romanians. Their culture is preious too. All cultures are equal, we shouldn't rival about it. Open your mind and prevent the unnecessary hate and influence. So PLEASE, stop hating Hungarians and other peoples, it's pointless. We musn't let hate control our lives.

I'm in general very confused about origins of the people in the Balkans. As a Romanian we've decided that we're Latin but in reality Romans living in our country mixed with Slavs and lots of other migrating people. The Romanian language has significant Slavic influences and the church is orthodox. I then moved to Bulgaria only to find more confused people. They claim to be Slavic and just by looking at them I was like ... so guys are Slavic ? Indeed if you check the genes I think you'll find many have Greek, Albanian or Turkish origin but not that much Slavic. I think it's just a mix of cultures and civilizations but nobody likes ... 10% Slavic, 20% Greek, 20% Albanian and the rest Latin or whatever. In the 1900s people needed to choose some national identities , be proud of then and stick with them so that's what they did.
@hellenicfighter87962 жыл бұрын
You are very right on this. Judging by the phenotypical variety in the Balkans, most nations look alike. Identity arose as to which kind of warrior band imposed its culture on the locals basically. So the Bulgars, an original Turkic people settled in the Balkans in the 8th century AD. As Slavic people had already migrated before them they conquered them but were quickly assimilated, so they became Slavic. Original Bulgarian rulers bore Turkic names. After they became Christianized by Constantinople (as the Byzantines couldn't subjugate them by war) they started bearing Christian names of Slavic and Greek origin. Furthermore 2 Greek (or at least Hellenized) Byzantine monks from Thessaloniki, Cyrillus and Methodius created an alphabet for them so they could worship Christ. This was the Cyrillic alphabet based on the Greek alphabet used by Constantinople/Byzantium. In this process the Bulgarians raided big swarths of Byzantine Macedonia and Thrace. Many Greek-speaking Byzantines became assimilated in this way by the Bulgarians. Ottomans never mixed with Christian Balkan societies themselves. Sometimes they either bought or stole women for their harems but only a tiny fraction of Muslims in the Ottoman Empire could actually own a harem. Only local administrative officials (Pashas) or rich Christian merchants could. Many Balkan Christian were willing to convert to the Muslim faith during the Ottoman Empire as a means of avoiding taxation, but Ottoman authorities themselves were the first to actually oppose this as this would mean a dramatic decrease of state revenues and taxes collected. Targeted Islamization occured only in Bosnia (muslim Serbia basically) and northern Albania. The Ottomans wanted the north of Albania to adopt Islam due to Skanderbeg's resistance to their rule and to fend off the Venetians and other Catholics from using Durazzo and Albania as their foothold against the Ottomans. They did the same in Bosnia due to Catholic/Venetian/Croatian presence in their borders, they needed a population loyal to them so they introduced Islam.
@hellenicfighter87962 жыл бұрын
Now as far as Romania is concerned, Greece and Romania would actually be the same nation since their only difference is language. You use Latin, we use Greek, but our culture and religion is the same. Before the introduction of Western nationalism, Greeks used to identify themselves as "Romans" (Rhomioi) as descedants of the Eastern Roman Empire basically, in the exact same way Vlachs/Romanians do. Big numbers of Vlachs migrated to mainland Greece, introducing food (e.g. corba de fasole) their pastoral way of life and even their uniforms (many uniforms in mainland Greece in Thessaly, Pindus and Epirus are Vlach in origin) but again were linguistically assimilated because the Church used Greek as a liturgical language and to advance inside the Byzantine and Ottoman empire as a Christian, knowledge of Greek was essential. Our ancestors perceived this as just swapping one language for the other basically, since as I wrote above before the introduction of nationalism in the Balkans people had a religious not a "national" identity irrespective of the language they spoke. The story of Arvanites, Orthodox Albanians in Greece and Epirus is exactly the same. For this reason Balkan people should leave language aside and build on their common Orthodox civilization and culture.
@gaborszarka75962 жыл бұрын
The Karpathian Basin is big mix of everything. In hungarian history we have learned that some people were here then we came, then cumin people came, the tatars, then german people were settled, then turkish people occupied a big part then germans again, and slavic, greek, albanian nations were all around the whole time. It is a big j*zz fest, and I think the whole who is who and who were where is pointless today. :)
@mforce22 жыл бұрын
@@gaborszarka7596 That's for sure, that it's pointless, but tell that to Mr Orban or some other guys. Pushing the nationality button unfortunately is easy and since it brings good results for those who do it here in the Balkans a lot do. You dream that you can have no borders and just go here and there and just feel at home. I for one feel European but it's not always so easy. Strangely enough for me because I grew up in Timisoara a lot of cities in Hungary seem more like home than some cities in Romania ( outside of Transilvania ). Still with all the nationalistic tendencies in Hungarian politics I'm not really happy to tell people that I'm Romanian. Sadly this region of Europe is a sad place still and instead of looking to make it better together we're focused on who is who and who got which land which belongs to the other. As my wife said Romania has enough land, what it needs is to develop. Couldn't agree more.
I'm hungarian so I know Budapest. I'm not living in Budapest but I have been there and I will go there too. If you ask me there are more beautiful places just like Gyula town (there is a big castle and a fortress and it is really close to the Romanian border) there are Keszthely which is located at the lake Balaton's Northwest corner but it really pays for you because there is a castle and so many types of museum. Near to Keszthely just to a few (10 or less) km there is Hévíz. Hévíz is famous from it's artesian lake which one is able to swim in. And there is Sümeg (it's located near to lake Balaton too) which is famous from it's fortress. It is really big and beautiful. And one of the best places there is Miskolc. Miskolc located in the Northeast Hungary. It has it's on fortress which is called "Diósgyőri vár" (Diósgyőr's fortress). Near to Miskolc there is Lillafüred. That place is really beutiful. It's located in a forest in the Bükk (which one is a small mountain) and it's has it's own lake. So you can walk in the forest, eat one of the best trout, you can also boat in the lake and go to 2 caves which ones are really breathtaking.

Nice video;) Some things I'd like to point out about it: Its title says you visited Hungary, which is technically true, but it would be more precize, if it said that you visited Budapest, since you've spent most of your time there and there are big differences even between the different districts inside BP, not to mention the differences between BP and the rest of Hungary. You yourself pointed out that there are 2 major problems with the city from a tourist's point of view: 1. There are too many other tourists 2. Locals are ripping tourists off Just imagine if they wouldn't be ripping off these tourists, how many more would come and make the place even more crowded. Btw I think you chose perhaps the worst time to visit BP, cause Christmas is one of, if not the most touristy time of the year here. Anyways, I hope that your overall impression of the city was positive and that you left with some nice memories. If you'd like to visit again I would suggest contacting a local (like me), who can help you with the accomodation, the groceries and in general with the stuff that is expensive in the city centre/is behind the language barrier.
