ehh, depends on the region, people in more rich places like alytus, vilnius and kaunas might not, but in villages near towns, or in small towns we eat a bunch of traditional food quite often, we still speak dialects, and we own patches of land with small farms, In more rural areas we have conserved traditions way more, and there is a bigger leftist/ communist population here due to the life being worse in some cases than before in the left statist country of ussr, also theres a lot of physical workers here who are more leftist because of the exploitation. Lithuania is small but very diverse -Dzūkas

I'm Lithuanian and this is probably the best "I visited Lithuania" video I've seen. Great balance between genuine appreciation and interest, research and humor. It was interesting to see somebody be amazed by things that are common and almost boring to me and others living here. Also I can't blame you for butchering the pronunciations, its common that historic peoples' names are especially difficult for foreigners. Lithuanian was slightly different back in the Grand Dutchy days, those kinds of names are rare nowadays. Fun fact: When a child is named after any of our kings (which is rare), the parents are putting in pride and trust in the child to become a great, successful or otherwise famous person. Our people have huge respect for our historical figures, especially the kings or grand dukes. Even the most bottom of the barrel hooligans do. In Lithuania If you're named Vytautas or Gediminas, you are instantly more respected. Many people here are superstitious, I remember my grandmother telling me when i was young to not speak ill of our past heroes that helped us achieve the comforts we have now, that if I do, i will bring terribly bad luck upon myself and my future children.

As a lithuanian, i will recommend for you to visit city called Kaunas, it's a really beautiful city, even tho 50% of buildings in Kaunas are Soviet apartment blocks, but still, there is so much to do there.
@MJ-uk6lu5 ай бұрын
A lot of Kaunas is built to look as dystopian as it gets even in terms of commie architecture. Chemijos gatvė and close region straight up looks like Chelyabinsk or some other Russian industrial shithole. It's mostly center that looks good and close raions to it. I also don't really like that it's so badly spread out with tons of space taken up on outskirts by extremely low density personal housing raions. Out of all districts, I would say that the entirety of Šančiai is just semi-gopnik place. It's badly run down and not modernised and with some really sad near bankruptcy level industrial activity going on. If anybody wants to visit Kaunas, then best raions are center, Žaliakalnis, Panemunė and Vilijampolė. Dainava, Eiguliai and Šilainiai are fine if you live here, but there's really nothing to see here for tourists. Aleksotas has some interesting places to see, but overall it's a weird mixture of low density private houses and some depressing industrial activity stuff, so it's just not great, not awful. A lot of good stuff is actually just a tiny bit outside of city like Jiesios draustinis, Girionių miškas, Rumšiškės and so on, but it's technically not Kaunas anymore, so yeah. Weird thing to say, but the best Kaunas is outside of Kaunas if nature is more important.

Lithuania wasn't even forced to become Christians, and it took them 100 years to decide to become Christians
@S3l3ct1ve2 жыл бұрын
The duke decided to turn Christian since he didin`t want (or maybe couldnt anymore) to keep fighting wars. Religion back then was basically a political power/tool, to control countries. And while average people were convinced about god and stuff, the kings and monarchs of the countries knew that it was basically a fraud in order to gain influence. The kind would not be recognized by the other kings if he was not coronated by the church, what that basically meant was that, if the church did not approve you as the king of your territory, then the others would send armies to take that "unclaimed" territory.... When you think it that way, all the religions wars suddenly makes sense...

As a native lithuanian who had the chance to buy and consume hard liquor at 18 (before they changed it to 20 a couple of years later) I almost had it out of my system as a "new thing" and just treated it as another way to improve an evening if anything else. (My claims are legit as I had 6 years of experience in ER and it kept repeating on the same "holiday" days") There were still plenty of young people overdosed on alcohol on their 100-day celebrations before they finished their 12th grade (last year of high-school). I believe the 18 year thing is ingrained into the minds of people as the mature age and it's just the way it is. Anyone can find friends who can provide alcohol on a whim and no one can be blamed. It's a silly restriction like tons of others that we have. But we deal with it daily and we're still a proper country somehow. I do believe 18 was the proper age to have people go at it but the government... Eh it's a whole 'nother topic that I have no clue about. It is what it is. Sending you all the love to Japan from Lithuania

I am from a gopnik area in Lithuania (not Vilnius obviously) I am also Orthodox but I am not Russian. The reason why I am Orthodox is apparently my family converted during the Grand duchy days.The church I go to is also gopnik looking as it's wedged between two commie blocks lol. Also you passed an Orthodox church in the video @5:13 that church (St. Paraskeva) it was first open 676 years ago during the Grand Duchy Of Lithuania days. being the oldest orthodox church in Lithuania and one of the oldest churches in Lithuania. Both of my grandparents were baptised there when they were baby's. I'd say for a true "Lithuanian" experience leave Vilnius. Vilnius in my opinion has become too touristy. As you leave the capital and spot your first rundown village/commieblock you'll start to get a sense of how a lot of Lithuanians live. The apartment I live in was built during soviet times and it is nothing fancy as you can imagine lmao, the staircase always reeks of piss and alcohol. I'd say only the wealthy Lithuanians live in Vilnius/Kaunas. Another point you mentioned is the drinking age. Although the drinking age is high compared to everyone else in Europe. a lot of the youth will still drink. I've seen people who look my age (15) get drunk off their heads at buss stops or other random places hell even I have, our vodka/beer is some of the best in Europe :D

Alr lemmie clarify something- Vilnius is a very modern city, especially made for tourism etc, if you went to any other place you would have realised that it is much more like the balkans. Still very nice video tho

Go to Klaipeda, its a town next to the sea and has a large docks area, plus the oldtown is awesome, but small compared to Vilnius.

Tons of negative andies in the comments here but I had fun with your video and I'm sharing it with friends who are clueless about Lithuania. Sure, it can be a shit country from the outside view (and it probably is) but we're still here and it is what it is. There are way worse places in the world to live and we just live here one day at a time. Thank you for all the jokes and memes on the low-key that you provided. Subbed and saved to share with all the people that have no clue about Lithuania. Keep on with the content my guy

The sakotis might be better known to English speakers as the baumkuchen or the German Tree Kuchen. The Poles also have it as sękacz. ;) The zeppelins are also pretty well know in Polish cuisine as kluski śląskie; the latter are much smaller but the recipe is still the same - meat in potato dough.

Swedes (or more specifically Scanians) also have it in the form of spettekaka

''baumkuchen'' means absolutely O in English. Closest is 'Spit Cake'. Dough wrapped around a stick or iron bar, [ spit / spear ], and cooked over charcoal.

Fun fact, the Gedeminas Castle was surrounded by the trees, but someone thought it was a good idea to cut out all the trees and pull out all of the roots which were holding the hill in place. So now the hill looks like a bald guys head and wrapped up like a burrito with nets and other stuff, because the castle is in risk to just fall and be destroyed. Also, scientist made the examine of the hill and found a ton of dead bodies buried in the hill, they were soldiers back then.

Great video. The only thing - you should buy new phone with optical video stabilization. As the otherwise beautiful scenery looks shaky, dark and not too crisp.

Man lithuanians are culturally nordic peoples, no one dress like a gopnik, some parts of baltics are inhabited by slavs and the baltic inhabited parts look like Sweden and even mentality and traditions of baltics , is a big diference between the est and west of baltics, because estern parts are inhabited by russians,poles(poles from baltics are half nordic culturally because many are native baltics polonized )belarussians o ukrainians
