Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022)
“When I choose to see the good side of things, I’m not being naive. It is strategic and necessary. It’s how I learned to survive through everything.”
Angel watches Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022), for the first time, sinks into the cracks of the couch, and has her emotions wrecked with relatable love. Starring Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu, Jamie Lee Curtis and James Hong, created by Daniel and Daniel and A24, this multiverse movie is the most out there, yet most realistic you might ever watch.
What are YOUR favorite scenes in the movie??? Who is your favorite character??

When he also turned out to be so positive, and for the best reasons, he truly became my favorite character. Who is YOUR favorite character in the movie??? Let me know! Made on a budget of 25 million with only 5 people on the special effects team. "Verse jumping " is a great concept from a writing perspective because not only does it give you license to give your character whatever ability you want, it also let's you drop in whatever bit of slapstick you want.

Fun fact about the marital art choreography. It was done by the KZfaq channel Martial club. The directors went on KZfaq to find idea on how they wanted to do the fight choreography they found the Martial club channel and said “wait why don’t we ask them to do it” It’s must be amazing for the martial clubs channel to go from a home grown YT channel to doing the fight choreography with Michelle Yeo. One of my favourite things about the making of this film was that when Jamie Lee Curtis turned up and discovered she had a stunt double for the action scenes she said "I am not going to have someone else do my stunts when I am in a movie with Michelle Yeo." Another emotional watch, thats 2 in a row. As always a great reaction (especially when you spooked yourself... TRIVIA - Language is very important to the story. Evelyn speaks to her father in Cantonese, but she speaks to Waymond in Mandarin, showing cultural differences in their upbringing. Mother-Daughter relationship is also language shaped. Evelyn speaks to Joy in Mandarin and English, while Joy answers back in English and bad Chinese. Neither one find the words to express their ideas clearly to the other, keeping them divided. Even the language barrier with the Internal Revenue Service makes everything harder.
@AngelGroves
@AngelGroves Жыл бұрын
Michael, thank you!! Also...WOW. I love they did that with the languages. The main thing I wish about myself is that I knew more languages. I'm working on it, but I chose Japanese to start (the anime fan in me haha). I definitely didn't pick up on all of the different languages and dialects. Thank you for sharing this!
@Intranetusa
@Intranetusa Жыл бұрын
Joy only answers back in the Mandarin language (poorly) as she does not know how to speak the Yue-Cantonese language that her grandfather speaks. The actress for Evelyn (Michelle Yeoh) grew up in Malaysia and also doesn't natively speak Mandarin and had to learn Mandarin in the early 2000s for the movie Crouching Tiger, Hiden Dragon. I believe Michelle Yeoh's Mandarin actually uses a Hong Kongese dialect of Mandarin instead of the most common standard dialect of Mandarin. So it is a mix of different languages (English, Mandarin, and Yue-Canto) and even the same language with different dialects - Evelyn speaks Mandarin with Hong Kong dialect while Waymond speaks Mandarin with a different dialect (I believe the standard dialect).

@@AngelGroves One part that the subtitles misrepresent is when the family is at the elevators,(before Evelyn punches JLC), Gong-gong doesn't talk about Evelyn being irresponsible, (or whatever the subtitle was) in Cantonese, he literally says, "You are truly useless." SO harsh!

The entire ensemble did an excellent job. Ke Huy Quan stood out because he was made to by the film story, but Stephanie Hsu really nailed the role of Jobu Tupaki (including the part that was Joy), and Michelle Teoh was, of course, incomparable. And James Hong and Jamie Lee Curtis did brilliant support. The script and direction by the Daniels nailed it (you should also watch their Swiss Army Man), and the martial arts choreography of Andy and Brian Lee (the butt-plug duo) was superb. [And I expect that quite a few cosplayers will be sporting Jobu's magnificent costumes in the future.] It's so full of little details that you can rewatch it time and time again and it will still hit you hard. Superb. This was my favourite movie of 2022 for the emotional resonance it had with the audience. When you had a cinema of people crying at two rocks emoting on a screen you knew you had seen something special. [Although RRR did come close from the point of sheer outrageous spectacle and dancing.]

Welcome to the multiverse, Angel! Hope you're enjoying your tour through what is and what could have been and as usual, I have some information to help you on your journey: Evelyn's father is played by legendary actor James Hong who has over 100 credits to his IMDb and is one of the most prolific actors in cinema history. Reports during pre-production where that Joy was supposed to be played by Akwafina but obviously that wasn't the case as we got Stephanie Hsu instead who gives a fantastic performance. Ke Huy Quan (Waymond) became famous as a child actor thanks to roles in the Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom but left Hollywood to focus on other pursuits. This is his first major role in over 20 years. He also did as many of his own stunts as he could. All VFX were handled between 9 people (2 of them were the directors). No one had ANY prior VFX experience and many learned as they worked on the movie thanks to free online courses. To help the editors with the slow motion elements, majority of the film was shot in high frame rate while other scenes like Evelyn getting sucked into the Janitor's Closet were filmed in slow frame rate and having Michelle Yeoh pushed into the closet at normal speed. A key component both in a technical and thematic element in the film is language. Evelyn speaks exclusively in Cantonese to her father, Mandarin to her husband and a combo of Mandarin and English to her Daughter who in turn only speaks in English or bad Mandarin to her mother. These help better explain the relationships between people, especially the intergenerational aspects between parents and children and how the Divide between them can be subtle or extreme. The Daniels (Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) originally wrote the film with Jackie Chan as the lead but reconsidered the role as a woman for a more convincing story about relationships. The role ended up going to Michelle Yeoh, who worked with Jackie Chan in 1992's Supercop. Dan Kwan originally had a plot point about Evelyn having undiagnosed ADHD but later dropped it, coincidentally, while researching the condition, he found out he has ADHD himself. Daniel Radcliffe was supposed to make an appearance in the film but had to drop out due to scheduling. Radcliffe was in the Daniels' Swiss Army Man (2016) and has said that he'll gladly work with the Daniels on any project they ask without hesitation or seeing a script. The dog mom at the beginning of the film presents a dry cleaning ticket with the number 42. This is a shout out to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as 42 was the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything. Evelyn ducking through the cubicles while hiding from Deirdre is an homage to The Matrix when Neo is trying to avoid the agents at his office. Evelyn's red carpet appearance was actually footage of Michelle Yeoh at her red carpet appearance at the premiere for Crazy Rich Asians. Bagels are slang term for zero or nothing, hence Joy's symbol for nihilism.. Wherever we go, whatever we do, what's in front of us is just as valuable as the the road not taken. Live your journey and cherish every second of it because it's what makes your story extra unique. Until next time Angel 🖤 PS, I agree on Kickboxer being the better of the films. I personally grew up watching the Quest more often so it has sentimentality but objectively, I can respect Kickboxer more than Bloodsport.

I LOVE James Hong. In the unedited reaction, I mention him in Big Trouble in Little China and Mulan. Two of my favorites that he's in. Yes! I was proud of myself for recognizing Ke Huy Quan's voice from Indiana Jones and The Goonies. Though, I didn't know his name. No wonder I hadn't seen him in anything recently...that's awesome he is back, plus WOW he was incredible in every aspect. Supercop??? I need to check that one out soon too. I like Jackie Chan a lot. I'm glad she got this role; she killed it. The part that blew my mind the most...ALL VFX HANDLED BETWEEN 9 PEOPLE. I love that. With not much prior experience either? That shows how with a vision, creativity, talent, and lots of work, you can pull off amazing things. I didn't even notice the number 42 ticket...I do know about the number 42 (I love numbers, and my birthday is 2-4), but I have only seen bits of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, when it used to play on T.V. Absolutely. I know one of the reasons I really appreciate this movie is because it conveys that message of cherishing and valuing every moment one has. Thank you for your positivity and info, as always, Brian. I appreciate it a lot. Also, I've never seen The Quest! I have many Van Damme movies on my list still to watch. I love you like him too. @@AngelGroves James Hong is awesome in everything. The fact that you mentioned Big Trouble in Little China and Mulan shows how great of a range he has as an actor. You like Jackie Chan but you never watched Supercop!?!? My heart broke a little right there, it was his next big American release after Rumble in the Bronx and she is very much his equal in that film on the stunts and the fight scenes. It's one of the reasons why they have always had similar roles in Hollywood but Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is where she is in Peak form as both a fighter and an actress. The VFX stuff really surprised me but it's as you said, the passion was there Above All Else and having that inspire them to make this film on their own is a testament to it and now it gets to exist for all of us to see and enjoy. I never saw The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy either but when I was looking up information I thought that was still pretty interesting tidbit of info and I didn't realize you had a birthday on Feb 4th so that's another fun little coincidence. Of course I'm aware of Van Damme, I'm 5 years older than you, I grew up in the '80s and '90s watching all the classics. And while I like the Quest, it's funny because the guy it's all based on, Frank Dux convinced Jean-Claude Van Damme to essentially make the same film more than once about an underground fighting tournament, which is why you you watch Bloodsport, Lionheart and the Quest, you're going to see so many of the same story beats and elements telegraphed early on that you'll figure out the film before it even gets there. Although 2008's JCVD is one of the best Jean-Claude Van Damme films I've ever seen and his performance in it is fantastic because he's paying a version of himself in a hostage situation but he gives this monologue which is very raw and a bigger performance than I think he's ever given. Definitely worth checking if you haven't seen that one. Until next time Angel 🖤

After being in "IJ: Temple of Doom" and "The Goonies" as a child, Ke Huy Quan found roles drying up for adult male Asian actors. Some of his friends were booking 3 or more auditions per week, whereas he'd get maybe 1 every 6 months, which would go nowhere. So he quit acting, and got a behind-the-scenes job doing stunt coordination. But more recently when "Crazy Rich Asians" came out, he realized that maybe parts for someone like him existed again, so he got an agent to try and start over with acting. One week later he got the audition for this movie.

Its strange and wacky. The flipping between genres...Sci-Fi, Comedy, Action, Drama...its an absolute rollercoaster ride. They did an incredible job with the budget

Oh, I have seen this one. I'm still not sure what to make of it. I found it kinda overwhelming at certain points. Was a really well done film though and truly took the multiverse concept further than almost anything before (and I agree with the various comments said about this film and another 2022 movie that really didn't do much with the multiverse concept despite having it in the title). Gonna watch this reaction later when I eat my dinner. :D I didn't even realise that guy was the kid from Goonies and Temple of Doom til after and that he'd barely done any other acting between then and this film. :O

Yeah, it did get a little overwhelming at parts, but done well, and overall really relatable for me, and I really love the sound and creativity in the movie. I agree with the multiverse bit also, though what parts they did do with it were a really fun way to view it. Than anything else, this movie is more of a simple, yet in-depth family drama with the theme of nihilism and sci-fi added in, in my opinion. If I hadn't seen Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom SO many times, I wouldn't have recognized him so quickly either. I think it's awesome he's back into acting...he was great!! I hope you enjoy the reaction with your dinner, later, and I'll see you for the next one! :)

I knew very little about this film before I saw it. Pretty much watched it based on the casting. Was pleasantly surprised to see a strong attempt at Absurdist themes in a market-space frequently dominated by Existentialism based story-telling, and to have it look and feel just as fantastical as anything in that space. Added to my pile of good 😊😊

My favorite movie of the year. And it doesnt happen often that a movie with a asian lead becomes a big movie. Just think about it the last wold wide asian sex symbol was Bruce Lee. Sure there are some asian boybands now but they are not a worldwide sex symbol. I never would have imagined that i would almost cry over a conversation between 2 rocks!

I LOVE your comment and agree with it so much! I was watching my reaction back a few minutes ago (to see how it looked actually posted on YT), and I regretted not putting in a thought bubble in the video of me thinking how HOT Waymond (Ke Huy Quan) was during his fight scene. Then, his personality just increased the hotness tenfold. I'm really happy he's back into acting. Also, right?!?! The rock convo is probably my favorite part of the whole movie...well, tied with Waymond being Waymond. But the rock part is really beautiful. Thanks for your comment!

@@AngelGroves yes i agree. I also sensed that you are a emotional person. And thats what i mean with that you suprised me in a good way. I used to have a lot of emotions as well. But to the point that it limited me, What helped me regulate that is to realize that you have a emotion and dont let your emotions have you. Because if you let your emotions take you over, you stop being yourself. Throwing a good part of yourself away is easier than getting it back. I also feel like we are quite similar. And i dont say this often. I also like the little bit of insight you share about your history with movies. I went on a date with a girl who was a extra in movies or tv when i was younger and got paid for the date🤣 i also used to work in television as a producer and i didnt like it because a lot of people act fake. And i am not talking about the actors sadly. They did it to keep their positions. Greetings from Amsterdam.

The dialogue and acting is so fluent that it must've been fun to work on. Almost every scene has subtle humour which will lead into a laugh out loud scene, an emotional moment or a WTF moment - sometimes all at once. Always makes me laugh when Americans say fanny pack...if only they knew.

I debated between re-naming my title "Shhh...just be rock.", solely because that laundry line in the convo IS one of the parts I had to edit or time :( , even though a favorite. FULL LENGTH IS FREE FOR for everyone on Patreon this month, though! (it is currently uploading) I kept the laundry title, because Waymond's love overall is the best part of the movie for me, and since them in their laundromat was a big part of the entire movie, I knew people would get the reference. The things she's done and gotten through are astonishing, she's always a complete blast to watch All the choreography is so good, and there was definitely a lot of Hong Kong style cinematography showcasing it, which I love Kickboxer, huh? Bloodsport was one of the first US films to feature Jean-Claude Van Damme. It was an illegal full-contact fight held by the Triads in Hong Kong. Kickboxer was a movie where Jean-Claude's brother is injured in a Muay Thai fight in Thailand. And so Jean-Claude naturally studies Thai-style Kick Boxing and avenges him.

Ke Huy Quan has not been in a bunch of things, quite the opposite. He left acting after becoming disillusioned with opportunities for Asian American actors. Crazy Rich Asians have him FOMO, he asked a friend to be his agent and this script arrived two weeks later. Another fun fact, this movie was originally envisioned with Jackie Chan as a possible lead. That didn’t work out so the Daniels decided to flip the story around and call Michelle Yeoh.

Michelle Yeoh (60) as Evelyn 2. Ke Huy Quan (51) as Waymond 3. Stephanie Hsu (32) as Joy 4. Jamie Lee Curtis (64) as Deirdre 5. James Hong (93) as Gong Gong 95th Academy Awards (Oscar) * 11 Nominations Budget * $25 million (low) Box Office * $106 million (2/08/2023) Fun Facts * Initially, the directors offered Jackie Chan (68) the lead role, which he turned down. * Subsequently, the directors cast Michelle Yeoh (60) and Ke Huy Quan (51) and gender-swapped the story. * The mother-daughter conflict is more compelling than the father-daughter or father-son conflict. My Review * Directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, Everything Everywhere All at Once is a movie about nothing. More precisely, nothing matters. * At first, I was not too fond of the movie. The “over-the-top” humor was too much for my sensibility. On the surface, it is a tired story about a dysfunctional multi-generational Chinese family in America. Underneath, it is about “nihilism” across the multiverse. * I notice more on each rewatch: (1) the set design, (2) the symbolism of circles everywhere, (3) the range of acting, and (4) the fight choreography. I realize that the over-the-top humor was intended to shock the viewers out of complacency and to think “outside the box.” * Michelle Yeoh, the lead actress, gave the performance of her life. Jamie Lee Curtis, a supporting actress, was hilarious. Ke Huy Quan, a supporting actor, gave an award-winning performance. Ke was the 12-year-old Chinese boy in Indiana Jones 2 but quit acting to be a stunt coordinator. * Everything Everywhere All at Once led all 2022 films with 11 Oscar nominations.
