Especially considering what that $500k could do towards buying him & his bride a house. Maybe they could take out a mortgage for a house that is a little more than $500k, like a $1 million or $1.5 million house. If his bride has anywhere near his income, maybe a mortgage payment could work out to 25% of their take home pay. I think that might impress her more than spending $500k for one day.

@@cgasucks 5k is a little low, it is supposed to be the best day of your life aside from having kids maybe. What's the point of working hard and making money if you're not going to use it for something fun? Now you can debate that there's better things to spend money on, but if you value your wedding, 5k is pretty low in my opinion. But then again it all depends what you make, some people make 20k a year some people make 200k a year some people make 200 million a year. I would say it depends on what exactly you're spending the money on. If you're going to have a big family come or a lot of friends, $50 for a plate of food for 100 people is already 5k dollars (assuming my mental math is right) yeah that's a lot of money but you're buying food for friends and family which is generally a nice thing to do. I think the ultimate thing is only have a wedding you and your family can afford, which means cash and won't put you too far behind in life.

I get cultural rituals. But as George had the caller point out- typically both the families of the bride and groom cover this cost in Indian marriages. How I don't know, and probably don't want to know. Guy is living at home making 90k. Probably a tradition also. Family traditions are Great- Except for when they are harmful or damaging. Christmas for Americans has become harmful and damaging. The vast majority have forgotten what Christmas is about, or never even knew. People have bought into the "appearance" and have neglected the meaning. I have to assume other cultures have similarly done so as well. Imagine spending that 500k on a paid for home, or an initial deposit into a retirement account? Either way, you could be set up for a very prosperous life and able to gift others.

Then I moved to the city, on my own to put myself through college when I was about 19. If my parents wanted to move to the city were my good job is, I'd live with them again in a heart beat... it makes so much more sense to have the whole family working as a team. I have five daughters. We knew in advance that we weren’t gonna be able to help them have large weddings. We gave them a budget of what we could afford and they had to come up with the rest themselves. Everyone of my girls did an excellent job, throwing a nice reception. Their budget was $2500 that covered food photos and everything else including the dress they are all happy.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should!I attended a wedding that could rival a royal wedding, it was so over the top garish. My childhood friend had the most beautiful wedding. She was married in her parents backyard that's overlooking the city. White candles were lite everywhere, and every table had the most fragrant flowers the scent was blowing in the breeze. The music was soft and beautiful. The food was superb. The wedding cost was $18,000 they could easily afforded ten times that amount.

@Prey R I agree, but I don’t think he will go from 500k to 1k. Just trying to find a happy medium for him, so he don’t go broke. Expensive wedding doesn’t mean happy marriage.

I’m sorry but that is the most insane thing I’ve ever heard on Ramsey. Good luck with that! Unless you have a net worth of 12-15 million you should not even speak of a 500k wedding. PERIOD. But you do you.

There is nothing insane about it… Many Indians in Silicon Valley have net worths way more than that… I am sure his parents would be more than happy to foot the bill. I am not sure what was the point of the call tbh. I am sure he is going to inherit few million dollars and a plus a swanky house in the suburbs!

My wedding was 200$. My wife and I hand made our arbor from birch trees cut down from our property. Had the ceremony in our backyard, got free chairs to use from a local place, no gifts from anyone allowed. Only thing you were allowed to bring was good food and good stories. Great decision 👍

My husband and I paid for our wedding, cost us $10k total that we saved and we had 50 of our closest family and friends there. Best 10k I ever spent, we have so many good memories from that day and I cherish it so much.

I have been married 2X. Neither of my weddings cost more than $150. It is called a BUDGET. I could not afford these things.

Weddings can be low cost - my reception was a potluck and casual with my friends in the front yard of my parents' home and my parents' friends in the back yard. Mom made my wedding dress - a Vogue pattern which was so cute at the time. No giant expenses but lots of fun and it lasted only one night.

$500k for a wedding is objectively stupid regardless of culture.

He is 22 years old now and he planned to get married at 25 or 26. And he made 90k a year. He was planning a 500k wedding? Even he saves all the 90k each year, he will NOT save 500k before 26. His math is not graduated from elementary school yet.

My sisters wedding was by far the best most fun wedding I’ve ever been too! The reception party was at a big party house, catered food that was amazing, 150 people, open bar all night and the wedding was 7,000 bucks. With the gift money everyone gave it was free. I’ve been to many expensive weddings and none of them were really any good I would never waste big money on a wedding the whole it’s my day and needs to be perfect is fine but all that matters is family and friends come and everyone has a great time.
