The back plate is actually pretty thin titanium, grade 5. Most of the weight is from the ceramic tiles and the varieties of resins. I added the ceramics toward the end after not being able to find a better material and giving up on firing my own ceramic tiles (mixed my own clays from local craft stores and fired them in a microwave kiln you can easily order online). Everything I use is available at local stores or online and I'm able to modify or create in my shop. For test plates I like to maximize the area which is why I don't bother shaping them to fit carriers. My next project is an attempt to meet level III with a homemade flexible armor.

I think the reason the kevlar "expires" is because it's made to a minimum "military grade" requirement and it doesn't take long for it to degrade just below that minimum requirement. But it will stay reasonably effective for a long-ass time.

FYI, when you put plate steel on your wall, I'd put it behind the cinder blocks. That way the cinder blocks can brake up the bullet and the steel can fully stop the fragments. It's also cheaper to replace a cinder block or two than the plate steel.

Yeah sure Kevlar expires like drugs expire get the fuck out of here the only way Kevlar is expiring is if it all gets stretched out over a period of years like wearing it every day gets stretched out and loses it we’ve like it we’ve starts to come unraveled because it’s being used every day but it’s not like Food where it expires it’s more like drugs like prescription medication they put expiration dates on it but that’s just so you’ll throw it out and buy more that’s just the way they ensure that you buy more drugs or they make more money most people don’t know that drugs don’t expire pages see the expiration date ends think those are all very throw this out and get a new prescription

I am never dissatisfied with a good 'ol Demo Ranch Video. This video in particular, made me laugh out loud a bunch. There were multiple quotable moments, including: "We're totally safe" "We're even safer behind this wall" "It's probably made for kids" "If its runs, its probably good" (INSERT COMEDIC "almost shoots through 'safe' wall" MOMENT) And finally: "You get to enter to win a chance to come stay in my AirStream on the abandoned Ranch" I cant wait until the DemoRanchRanch is open for paid stay by reservation. I dream of booking a weekend with my family, or just a weekend out with the boys, and to go stay at that location. Camping, possible hunting, fishing, swimming, hiking, plinking, and even just helping develope the property. It all sounds AMAZING

A SUGGESTION: Sand Bags will stop wild shots better then anything. Two layers stacked end to end lengthwise in front of the cinder wall would do the trick. They are cheap, work very well and are easy to replace. Just a thought!

Kevlar doesn't really "expire" but the warranty lasts that long to account for harsh conditions (like being consistently left in a trunk in a Tx or Az summer) that have the potential to make it deteriorate over time. If stored in normal conditions it holds up.

The intro and thumbnail definitely made me concerned for Matt’s sanity. But then I remembered this is Matt, and he lost his sanity a couple years ago. I still question his actions.

I'm glad you are going to plate that wall. Any decently sized round will bust those cinder blocks pretty easily.

I feel like having a table rig for mounting and remotely firing via a cord from behind cover would be good for some of the more elaborately harebrained tests. Or for something like the bang-sticks, a basic pendulum drop rig would have taken away some of the sketchiness. If you channeled the early MythBusters you'd probably not go too far wrong.

@@RealMTBAddict Scott seems pretty careful with the sketchy stuff, firing it remotely and such. Matt was getting a little too quick to fire sketch guns in sketch scenarios with his own hands, lol. I just want everyone to be safe, and alive.

Honestly, 3A for the fiberglass one ain't bad, I'd say. Needs more testing, but it might just have a market if it proves a reliable alternative to modern kevlar

@@darkallyrecordings4931it was thick but appeared quite light. Maybe if he found the right mixture of composites, he could slim it down and have it still perform the same.
