Similar vein. Vampire hates anything Catholic, will run away shreiking and crying. Has undiagnosed PTSD from being a pagan who had Catholics slaughter his people, burn his family at the stake for being witches and then try to beat the devil out of him while praying. He was only a child, and would later become a vampire, but the unchanging nature of immortality means he can never really get over his PTSD

I had a character years ago that started as a Paladin, she was of a faith from the church she served. One day upon her return to her church, she was taken to the catacombs and forcefully turned into a vampire by other church members. While she was away, the church had been completely overrun by vampire overlords without her knowing. It created this character that still wanted to cling to her faith bc it was all she had, but also now had to live with being a holy, unholy abomination and I was LIVING for it. The very next session our DM quit that campaign and I’m still really sad I never got to play out that tragic and complex story.

One of the fluff stories for VtM is about a vampire priest. His congregation loves him because he regularly heals them and seems to actually perform miracles. The World of Darkness setting (the one Brennan is talking about) is really nebulous about this, but here's the gist: Belief, in this setting, has the power to shape reality. Only people who really believe in the power of the crucifix can repel vampires, and only christian crosses work because the collective imagination, influenced by works of fiction, believes in the power of christian crosses against vampires. These two things (a believing wielder and a collectively believed object) together create the power to actually repel vampires.

Personally, I like the explanation that the Netflix Castlevania series used. Most religious symbols are made of abstract geometric shapes that confuses and startles a vampire's brain. It's not the religious significance, it's the abstract geometry. I also like the idea that it's not the symbol, but the faith of the person focused through the symbol that works. An atheist grabbing a crucifix does nothing, but a devout pastafarian can put a collander on their head and the vampire recoils!

I had something similar with a DND character of mine. First time playing DND, I decided to be a paladin. But I couldn't decide what race i wanted to be. At first Tabaxi, cause hot cat girl. But then I read about teiflings and how they are usually treated negatively cause of demonic heritage. I always had a soft spot for characters pushing against social norms and doing 2hat they want or believe despite what society said; so I became a Teifling paladin, even though it wouldn't work well, I made it work. And her whole thing was, I'll show the world that not all devil spawn or teiflings are evil.

The first time I played a campaign with my current group (and it's still on going but coming to a close) I made a Drunken Master Monk who was a Red Dragon born named Zui Long And he was just, this tall jolly, pot bellied man who would enjoy drinking and clowning around, and the DM allowed us to take a magical object with us, even home brewed, so I just asked for a barrel of infinite Sake. What started as being a meme character, became a character who was genuinely wholesome, yet goofy, in and out of combat, often treating his foes with the regard of friends he would mess with, yet be deceptively deadly towards when he knew he needed to be, and also brokered great wisdom to the party in debates and dilemmas, though his words were... Strange Such as "we must decide. Chicken now, it eggs later." "if we are to put our foot in it, we may as well stomp!" And while he was silly and jolly, he could also be rather quite and somber, and very respectful of the situation, once having attended a whole town of dead villagers and sprinkling alcohol atop their bodies, as per his people's tradition

This worked really well for me the last time I played. When the dm was going over world lore he said the halflings got wiped out in a war. I told him I had been planning on playing a halfling and I was starting to worry I’d have to scrap it. He said “if she were a halfling she’d basically be the last halfling…” I said “what if she IS the Last Halfling?” So my character got a gritty reboot where she grew up as a pickpocket after her entire village and family died. She spent most of her time disguised as a human child but after some lucky loot rolls she also became a tiny little Batman 🦇

I like the idea of a setting where actually a large portion of vampires converted to Christianity of some form, since the Eucharist (i.e. communion, the partaking of bread and wine as the body and blood of Christ) would be a perfect solution for a vampire of conscience. Not to mention, Christianity is built upon redemption and salvation, which would be very appealing to vampires trying to overcome their evil ways, or trying to avoid becoming evil in the first place.

Well, the thing is to pull an "ackshully" on Brennan here, many of the Giovanni are either devout Catholics or at the very least give it some passing nod or even lip service. The same goes for some of the Sabbat in a twisted sense as they even utilize aspects of the Catholic churches "hierarchy system" for their own ranking system, and even Embrace those among the clergy whether said member of the Sabbat is a devout follower or not. Hell, I played a high ranking member of the Camarilla that was a Ventrue elder who was an extremely devout Catholic and was even a nun in her mortal life, her faith amongst her contemporaries oft either made her "eccentric" or someone keep at arms length. So going the whole "still believes in God" angle within Vampire the Masquerade isn't all that unique.

Its also very relevant to the arcs of Louie especially but Lestat as well. In Memnoch The Devil (SPOILER!!! IDK HOW TO DO THE TAG BUT SPOILER SPOILER FOR VAMPIRE CHRONICLES) Lestat literally meets God and the Devil (Memnoch). He tells lestat that "God" and creation is basically the concept of cell division, and all of humanity and Earth just grew from a piece of God himself. Louie struggles the most with his vampire self, at first feeding on rats but eventually accepting his fate in later novels. He is very empathetic and has retained more of his humanity than any other vampire. Lestat struggles a lot with being a "monster" in what he calls a "savage garden." He struggles with the question of "how can I be good and feed off the blood of humans" and "why would god allow such a creature as me to exist?" Anne Rice writes such beautiful prose and really captures the existential dread and nihilism of immortality, especially since (SPOILER AGAIN FOR QUEEN OF THE DAMNED) Lestat is basically immortal for all intents and purposes after feeding off Akasha (I think was her name). This is one of my favorite series. I always wanted His Dark Materials and The Vampire Chronicles to be made into series, and now both have and I'm fxcking stoked. Sorry for the novel.

I did this! My character in Vampire: The Masquerade took a weakness to be harmed by holy water. He was a priest, turned by a vampire who thought'd it'd be hilarious for the moral quandary of a "Holy man with a bloodlust". The character evolved really awesomely and it was great fun! Its the little things. He went through the whole "Is this Vampirism a gift or a curse?" "Is it right to follow God when I do things to satiate my own hunger?" "Am I still worthy of spreading his message?" etc etc.

I'm currently playing an Arcane Trickster Rogue in an 5th edition Eberron game with a few of my buddies. The Legerdemain ability granted by the mage hand adds so much mystique to the character, because it's not even a thing the Brainiac wizard in our party can do. My DM took this very simple ability, and connected it to this incredibly interesting plot hook involving ancient Elven magic passed through bloodlines. What Brennan is saying is something that I think can be a great way to expand upon a character's personality or history. By taking abilities granted by your character sheet, you can add a lot of really great depth to who they are.

I adore building characters around mechanical implications. The last VTM I ever played was a Tremere who was assisting his Sire in a blood ritual intending to artificially improve generation (there's already a ritual like that on the books, so this was favored as an improvement on that), and it backfired. Suddenly this prodigy was 14th generation, thin blooded, and had this one other negative quality that meant he was crazy weak, but didn't take aggravated damage from the sun AND could conceive a child. So me and the storyteller worked out a whole character arc around getting the True Love perk and actually having a child, and all the implication for that not only as a vampire in Camarilla society, but also as a member of the Tremere Pyramid. It was easily one of the best VTM games I ever played. Playing this new father desperately trying to fight against all the systems of control that kept him down. I really do think that VTM is at its best when the players don't want to be vampires anymore. They didn't sign up to be the bottom rung on an immortal mafia totem pole, and they want out.

I took the ability to speak with his dog, and I had to choose a vice, so I chose that he had become dependent on this one particular drug. As I was chatting with the GM about fleshing him out, 2 things happened: we got his motivation (find the chemist that did this to him and make him reverse it), and I discovered that the ability to mind link with his dog is an effect of the drug and he'll probably lose it if ever he breaks free. So I've got some stakes pre-built into the end of this adventure, all because I just wanted him to have a dog.

@jish55
@jish55 2 жыл бұрын
After killing Abel, God cursed Cain with immortality so that Cain couldn't gain access to heaven. In exchange, God guaranteed he couldn't be harmed or else God would smite them 7 fold. After about 1000-10000 years of wandering around, he starts to find people, one of which is Lilith, Adam's first wife, who he seduces and convinces her to teach him the powers of Hell. She obliges since God apparently cast her to Hell and she became Satan's lover, and in doing so taught him MANY Demonic powers, which eventually led to the vampiric disciplines the other clans use. 4 Angels came down, saying that if Cain apologizes, he could finally die and go to Heaven, in which Cain tells them to go fuck themselves, so they in turn curse him and his descendants with the 4 curses of Vampirism (can't be in the sun, need to feed on blood, stake to the heart, and cannot reproduce). Due to the demonic powers Cain learned though, he was basically immune to the blood, stake to the heart, and sun, but couldn't get past reproduction. This in turn led to him learning how to make others vampires, and thus he turned 3 people into vampires which became 2nd gens, they embraced multiple people, passing down the demonic powers, which started the disciplines, and their childer (the 3rd gen antidiluvians), began the clans and in turn, vampiric society.

That System (the old Version) enhance the Roleplay so much by Flaws and not the Virtues, it is amazing. Not because the Bonus Points but the Flaws are really well worked out for Roleplay. One Mage-Char worked soley around a Combo in Flaws allowing him literally do anything as long as the Surrounding People believe in it; so he could do anything, but only if it fitted to the Enviroment and the Plot, but as soon as he would try to exploit it, it would not work at all.

In VtM a vampire can not believe in or be directly effected by holy symbols but if a character who has true faith comes at you with a bible and uses it on you. You do get repelled and can take damage and be in game mechanically feared via dice rolls to run away from that bible wielding character. That is why hunter the reckoning mortal can deal with a lot of supernatural creatures. Is fire power and their faith. You don't have to believe in god in that world for him to believe in you. @@cellelysium9741 nah he's definitely talking about VtM/WoD Vampires. He mentioned Giovanni vampires and also being afraid of crucifixes was considered a flaw because holy symbols don't work for most vampires. There is this thing called True Faith (I don't know if he forgot about it or something) through which mortals can physically hurt vampires by their belief in any god (Christian, Muslim, etc) if their belief is VERY strong. So basically, it's not the power of the crucifix but rather the faith of the man who wields it.

I had a similar experience with this, but it was because of an of an experience in a session. I was playing a barbarian with no real backstory yet and we were transported to a desert. My barbarian was extremely dumb (3s and 4s in int and wis but high teens in str and con) and so, in character, I decided to dig. I rolled a nat 20 and my DM decided that I had found a mysterious rock, I rolled to break it and got another nat 20 so I accidentally perfectly extracted a green gem from within. Later on in the session during a combat encounter we whete wholeheartedly losing I just decided to slam my barbarian’s hammer into the gem after throwing it onto the enemy’s back. I got yet ANOTHER nat 20 and so my DM decided the gem exploded, causing a surge of energy through the enemy and myself, hinting that it may have permanently changed my character. After the session I did some thinking and I decided to make this green energy a sort of power source for my barbarian. Long story short, me deciding to randomly dig out of stupidity ended with me creating a 20 page backstory about a barbarian who was cybernetically enhanced by a lich obsessed with gold to have a golden skeleton and mostly artificial muscles, it caused the birth of a homebrew subclass very reminiscent of terminator which gives insane buffs when on 1 hitpoint (worked well with my half-orc racial feat), and it even caused a radical change to the planned story of the campaign due to the fact that the DM loved my backstory so much he decided he BBEG should be the Lich fore mentioned rather than what he had planned before. Needless to say, I loved that barbarian and boy am I glad I decided to dig. TL:DR I was playing a barbarian, decided to dig and found a gem. This gem sparked a 20 page backstory, a homebrew subclass and major changes to the campaign storyline as a whole.

To have your characters faith strengthened by his own weakness... a wonderful Catch 22... I used to know a malkavian artist that wanted to create the perfect work of art it was to be called " torpor" the grand plan was to stake a vampire, cover the body in a thin layer of cement, and then donate it to the city. He grabbed a bruja in a business suit and the guy who played him had to stop playing that character for a year because he was a statue in a playground downtown.

@@Emberheart_ believe it or not the character I'm describing was played by Mark Reinhagan one of the writers of the source books...we had a unique venue we played in he came and checked it out. It was in jacksonville fl and it was called perdition. It had the distinction of being called the world's first live-action role-playing venue... we had a juice bar a dance floor and numerous rooms to Retreat to that the normal patrons were not allowed to go into there were people there that didn't play they were just there to dance to the gothic Industrial Music we had to pay a door charge to play LOL it was five bucks. People thought we were really vampires lol it was a trip

The "Confession" arc of the comic book Astro City features (spoiler) a former priest vampire who became a super hero as a form of penance, complete with a costume incorporating a cross symbol that causes him constant pain.

Reminds me of how in The Elder Scrolls universe vampires actually do worship a deity of their choice, which is usually either Clavicus Vile or Molag Bal. Basically anybody other than Arkay, Auriel, Stendarr, and Meridia since those ones hate the undead in particular.

Imagine if that character was in the Volkihar: "My family sought power. I was their sacrifice, I pay the price for their choices. But now? I seek redemption, for their sins and mine. I can't keep living like this! All these other leeches can keep this curse at the expense of their souls, I cannot. I must find redemption, a cure, if only the 8/9 (depends on player choice) were willing to heal a lost soul like mine." Then you can either betray them to Harkon, take them to the Dawnguard for a purifying execution, or to a temple to seek healing and they convert, you visit later and they give you an exclusive item... but if you take him to that healer elf in Morthal you out all of you and you will be shot on sight every time.

This is just a perfect example of how to do creative character building. It should be in a tutorial video; make a character choice that puts you off balance (flaws and such), rationalize how it makes sense for your character, then extrapolate to the setting to understand how the character interacts with the world through this flaw.

From the Book of Mulligan we reinforce the fact that imagination is not just an escape tool you use while bored at work, neither is it to only be used when stretched to its limit thereby increasing chances of writers block, but by proper use, even the lightest of touches it can move literary mountains

Can do, really depends on the character (I'm not really up to speed with the newest version). Vampires have certainly used religion as a weapon in the past.

Wrote a whole writeup, that appeared to have disapeared, so my apologies if this get doubled. Religion is pretty common among WOD vampires, especially the Giovanni who take great care in appearing like faithful Catholics (Even if they tend to lasp, what with the Necromancy, Necrophilia, Incest and all the Necromantic Insesctual Necrophilia). Then we have the various Muslim vampires, who struggles with joining the need to drink blood together with the demand of eating halal. And the fun that comes from that From what I remember the most common argument is to claim an exemption from it, in the same way some people with medical conditions might be excused from it or from observing the Ramadan. Otheres go even further and make sure only to drink from faithful muslims (You are what you eat, I guess...) and/or take a vow to protect Islam/Mortal Muslims, seeing it as their holy duty and a way to make the best of their curse.

This reminds me of my dragonborn rogue character. He was supposed to just stay in an inn for most of his teen years until he set out on adventure. His whole deal was that he was cursed with an unpredictable madness whenever it got dark. So he always stayed in bright cities and towns. On a campaign, we had him stay at a temple before setting off. That one decision made Torinn have this huge backstory of finding solace in a church and performing good deeds using his rogue skills. He essentially became a daytime vigilante, resolving crime so that no one else will ever stay a victim like he was. The flaw I took with his Haunted One background was a default one: have to perform a certain ritual. That had nothing to do with religion beforehand, now it makes perfect sense. It would be so easy to have him multiclass into being a paladin or cleric, but maybe he multiclasses into warlock as a way of accepting his past. Who knows? Long story short: a campaign suddenly canonized my dragonborn rogue as a Catholic vigilante.
