Brother I can’t tell you how much this was worth to me! Seriously I’m sitting here in my car on break with my little shitty Yi M1 $400 camera with a Rokinon Cinema 24mm on it, feeling all the dejection in the world, and mind you I’m no spring chicken. I found myself thinking “what the hell am I doing?” You’re too old to want this or too poor to afford a camera with which you can do some real work...blah blah blah on and on. And then I watched this. Seriously man, this video nearly brought me to tears, not that I’m easily given to tears, but it was just a confluence of forces and timing. You literally just brought me out of an abyss my brother. Thank you for all of your wonderful videos and lessons. You do more good than maybe you know. Many many Thanks, William

I am a firm believer that skill or creativity is much more important than fancy equipment- don’t get me wrong nice equipment is great but if you give it to someone with no skills/creativity/eye for composition they won’t be able to do much with it. So don’t worry about your camera for now, just keep practicing!

Update: I took all your comments to heart....the kind ones that is. I kept rocking out with my Yi M1, working on my eye and composition. Something began to develop, slowly at times but sometimes in leaps and aha moments. That “shitty” little camera became my teacher and fostered in me a deeper love and respect for the art. I travelled with it and even did a few jobs with it. I am now using an EOS R and could not be happier with it. I am gradually building and refining my portfolio, and editing a short film and loving every moment of it. Funny thing is though: my favorite Photo was taken with my M1 😂. I’ve since gifted my niece with it and so her journey begins...but I miss my little Yi M1. Seriously speaking, thanks Peter, you rock brother and thank all of you for relating, for sharing and for all the encouragement. Stuff like this creates little pockets of awesome in this world.🙏🏽

You know, I’ve been watching Pete’s vids for about two hours now. And I have to say...there’s something about Pete that makes you want to burst out of yourself and live your truest life. To break that ceramic mask that you wear everyday as a facade of “this is who I am”, but really is a prison for your creative soul. Beyond his amazing photography and video inspiration, watching a person live their lives completely uninhibited by the boxes of society is hypnotically intoxicating and wonderfully liberating. Thank you Pete, for making us listen to the drum beat of our calling inside all of us.

bro my dad used to have a cool recording camera that it's shit now but I remember myself being like 4 in the woods holding the camera trying to vlog cause that's what my dad was doing. I really needed to see this. Thank you. I sometimes struggle with my self confidence because I see other photographers take way better photos than me, then I look back at my first photos and amaze myself with how far along I have come. But then anxiety has me thinking "you'll never be that good though" but this video really helps reassure me that we all start somewhere and will get better if we put in the effort and time. I'm starting our photography and every time I'm down or just don't want to go shoot anything to practice I look at your videos , any of them , it gets me motivated , and makes me want to go and shoot literally anything , I look up to you , your work is amazing . I love everything about this. I think it's amazing that 10 years later, you're still friends with your first paid gig. I recently started going through my photos from 7 years ago on my hard drive so I screamed when you said that back then you felt it was a great shot, because that's exactly how I felt when I saw my work. Now...I wish I could go back with what I know now and shoot it all over again. Thank you for sharing!

Im so glad I came across this channel. Im the type of guy that jumps right in to hobbies...I just picked up my first -decent- camera recently (Lumix G95). After watching your videos, I've learned SO MUCH to put into practice...depth, lighting, what lenses to use for certain situations (Im up to 5 lenses now, I've only had the camera for a month). Its definitely inspiring to see how far you've come, and hopefully I can learn some good techniques faster with your help. Keep the videos coming!

Thanks for this video, Pete. It was you who inspired me to get back to my camera and start shooting. I thought that dumpster one was the best out of all these, had good linear structure, well graded, conceptual, minimalistic, it had more substance and a more curious subject then any of the others

I think its quite simple, just look at how light is hitting Bobby and where the shadows are forming. For example, the first photo has 2 lights behind Bobby at around 45 degree angles, high above, pointing down.

Whenever i feel discouraged about taking photos I think of the fact that you can literally take pictures NO ONE in the world has ever taken or seen. It just amazes my mind and it always lifts my motivation.

I recently got my sister the camera she wanted for Christmas and thought nothing of it. But after just using it with her for a couple days I've gotten hooked and discovered an interest I never realized I had. Now I'm currently waiting to buy my own. I've been doing nothing but doing research while I wait. Learning as much as I can. Let me tell you man, I'm beyond thankful I ran into your channel. I've learned so much from you it's incredible. Your videos are super informative and very entertaining. You're great at your craft and you're an inspiration to me and to a lot of people. Thank you and keep putting out great content. P.s. Thanks Peter. I am a big fan of your work and your vlogs and love how passionately you explain stuff and share your experiences.
