I've seen this happen, a couple of weekends back at the club (I was the one that did the first aid to the guy). The problem comes mostly from the source of the arrows... Buying them from Amazon is a risk because most of the time you're not sure of the quality control - if any - the seller did... It's messed up I know :( It's one of the reasons why we tend to source them from the most legit sources and brands possible! It was something that used to happen with some frequency back in the old days when the sport became more common... Nowadays it's mostly if they're really old arrows. Hope you recover fully soon, brother! Stay strong!

ouch! happy You're healing and Thanks for sharing the story that is a complete freak of an accident and it just goes to show the energies involved when we're throwing arrows. as You say it's just not worth taking chances with it, never mind the financial costs involved being able bodied is a priceless gift which most of us blessed that way take for granted. so that being said, really happy that You are healing and also stoked to see You outside throwing arrows again. take care Brother and all the best to You and your beautiful wife. ❤

I was just telling my son bend and roll each arrow before each shot. Especially if you’re shooting tight groups slapping arrows Together. It takes a couple seconds to test each arrow. Learn from your mistakes and bend and roll each arrow. It happens more than you think. I’ve seen tons of pictures and videos. Flex each arrow

Brother, you didn't know me from Adam but i truly feel for you having had that happen. An arrow breaking like that, mid shot, has been one of my biggest nightmares ever since i first heard it can happen. Thanks for sharing your horrific experience and using it to educate other archers so they can hopefully avoid it happening to them. That's loving your neighbor as yourself in practice! Prayers for your full recovery, both physical and mental. Losing functionality in any capacity really does a number on ya. Stay faith filled and positive.

I much prefer Forrester wood shafted arrows especially because they are so tough and accurate. Tubular arrows (including bamboo) can inflict terrible wounds if we are in a hurry and let a damaged shaft get by us. The worst tubular arrow wounds are straight fiber carbon and bamboo, which breaks into dozens of mini micro spears which truly can destroy hand and arm tendons, ligaments and blood vessels. Wear an armguard, so what if someone razzes us for wearing one. It’s smart to realize that freak accidents can happen the more we shoot.

Man, that is awful. Sorry to hear that, I did not know you were going through that and I’m sure it has been tough. It is definitely something to think about as we shoot over and over using the same arrows as we continue to hit our arrows when shooting multiple arrows in a tight group and then bouncing them off things. But again that is a good reason to wear an arm guard as well, even though we get to where we do not think we need them because we do not get string slap, but that guard could have saved you from all of that. Take care and God bless.

Archery bracer would have protected where that hit, not criticism, I actually shoot without one too... but this video made me think maybe having a full arm bracer is worth it... its only an extra 10 seconds to put on, take off after shooting... 1 in a million also isn't rare, thats like enough a well practiced archer can expect it to happen a couple of times in their lifetime.

Nerve damage is the worst. I'm a disabled vet and I have 2 plates and 9 screws in my face. The whole left side of my face has massive nerve damage. I live with constant pain and having nerves firing off constantly with hot/cold burning numbness can drive one insane (15 years now). I recently now have nerve damage in my right thumb-have no clue how it happened but now it's so hard to shot with thumb release. I wish you luck my friend damaged nerves just make life so hard and one of the few things in life I love to do is archery. I hope you can get back to where you were before this all happened to you and enjoy that love of the perfect shot.

thumb draw puts a lot of pressure on a small area on the thumb, it can damage the nerve over time. I tried it for a while in a parcour session, my thumb went numb and then i quitted and returned to mediterranean draw. But after seeing this video i think i will give up on archery altogether even though its so enjoyable.

Hang in there buddy your arm will slowly heal especially if you keep working it with various tasks and the nerves will heal more and more. I am living proof of a shattered left arm being surgically repaired and then a year of daily occupational hand therapy from highly trained specialists. The surgeon said I will never shoot the bow again. God and I together proved him wrong, my first arrow in front of our Amish friends was to hit the aerial soda pop can stuffed with dirt that little Jacob threw high in the air. All glory to God is all I can say.

Did you know you can buy very high quality arrows that use aluminum shafts? Aluminum does not splinter, it does not crack, and I have never seen one that somehow "folded" up on release. I had a wood shaft splinter into my hand and could not shoot for YEARS I was so frightened of it happening again. When I did get over it I used aluminum or did not shoot. I know this was a bad accident but it pales to some of the pictures I have seen of carbon arrows letting go. Do a search if you think I am exaggerating. The notion that you can somehow bend a carbon shaft and actually tell if it is compromised is ludicrous as if people have the hearing of a wild animal or ex-ray vision like superman. I know it doesnt happen as often as it use to but all it takes is 1 employee having a bad day. I know I'm gonna get flamed for this but if I couldnt shoot aluminum, I wouldnt shoot.

@@Scout887Check your arrows before using or use aluminum arrows. Arrows typically only explode because they hit a hard target and that weakened the structure of the arrows. This is an issue with fiberglass, carbon, or wooden arrows. Aluminum arrows will bend instead of shattering. I've heard that bamboo arrows are also more durable than wooden (usually cedar) arrows.
