You did a great job! This is a classic. Aside from the script and story, the direction and cinematography are unlike anything they even make today. Plus, Jerry goldsmiths score is disturbing creepy and captures the mood perfectly. Additionally, the production values really take this film to A-level status. One of the greatest, if not the greatest horror movie of all time. Now you have to watch the sequel Aliens! Probably one of the best sequels of any movie of all time arguably.

Its a myth that the actors did not know what was going to happen I'm afraid ,they had all read the script , and the Cameras were all covered in plastic to protect them from the fake blood. They knew what was going to happen, but not _how_ it would be done. The freakout was to do with the blood pumps (spraying real sheep's blood) being aimed right at the actors and the stench of real animal organs and formaldehyde on-set. The actors didn't expect either.

46:00 The tech portrayed in this movie was already outdated in 1979. They weren’t trying to do futurism and project what tech would become; rather, they were trying to portray that this is not a state of the art research vessel, but that it is more like a working truck or tugboat operating under economic constraints.

Cats have been on board ships since ancient times. In addition to being good company, they also catch vermin that could otherwise ruin the food stores. In addition, on a space ship like Nostromo rodents could get to the wiring, causing damage that could be very serious when you're literally an astronomical distance from home. Thanks for reacting to this great film!

I stand corrected then, seems like he was there for the company! 🙂

There's a deleted scene that explains how the eggs are made. In that scene near the end Ripley finds what happened to Dallas and Kane. Kane is practically turned into an egg and Dallas is in the middle of the process, the room is also covered in some kind of organic material, like some sort of nest..Dallas is half conscious and begs Ripley to kill him, which she does with the flamethrower. The scene could also explain what happened to the crew in the alien ship, since the ship is also full of eggs

Fun fact, the parasite (facehugger) that attaches to Kane was originally going to be painted green. The writers and director visited H.R. Giger’s studio during pre-production to check on his progress. H.R. Giger was the artist behind the design of the alien creatures and spaceship. They saw the facehugger had just come out of the mold and the flesh colored latex looked more disturbing. It is funny how things like that work out. I love Alien and H.R. Giger.

everyone forgets, when Ash yells 'Don't Touch It!' that 1-They are not on a planet anymore, they are in the vacuum of space, and 2- ACID FOR BLOOD. You stab that thing, and the blood could very well eat through many floors and through the hull. I don't know about ya'll, but I'd prefer a fighting chance of defeating this thing or escaping via the shuttle over sudden decompression and suffocating to death.

The water was from the cooling units that were damaged when they landed. The alien likes to move through the air shafts to keep from being detected and hunt its prey. And you can't stab the chestburster because it is faster than you are, and the acid would destroy whatever part of you it splashed on. You missed the part where the chestbusrter tightened its tail around Kane's neck. But I love that you worked your way through the movie. But you must watch the follow-up sequel called ALIENS. It is more action oriented and will pull at your maternal instincts. I really can't wait. Keep going and enjoy

Good reaction, Nia. Btw, per your comment around the 2:25 minute mark regarding the silence of electric vehicles today, actually EVs were extremely popular back in the 1890s and early 1900s...and those electric cars were quite silent as well. Over 33% of the vehicles on the roadways in the early 1900s were electric. It's really only in the past 20 years that EVs have been making a comeback (although a failing comeback...lol). But yep...the 1890s into the early 20th century were already mass-producing those vehicles. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, the very first EV was conceptualized and an experimental prototype developed way back in the 1830s. Also, I assume that other commenters clued you in regarding the sequence of the movies (since you mentioned Alien vs Predator). Bear in mind, this 1979 movie and its sequel in 1986 were the original, and contained within its own universe. There was a 3rd Alien movie as well in the late 1990s. However, just imagine that many years later after the classics, the movie studio decided to exploit the franchise as a money grab. So they bring in a new team to write sequel and prequel scripts...mix the movie and ANOTHER movie franchise...and totally dilute from the original by releasing trash for the gullible movie consumers. In a nutshell, please watch this movie and its 1986 sequel as their OWN movies, and if you wish, proceed with caution if you decide to watch and react to the diluted money-grabs put out by the movie studios...LOL. (Btw, this movie was before my time, but even I know that it is a classic, and the recent trash with the 'Alien' name are insults to the original gems).

You did kinda figure it out. It does have a very short lifespan. It was actually in the shuttle laying there waiting to die. Ridley is wishy washy about the lore. Any guess is as good as Scott’s “official lore”. And generally speaking, the alien makes little sense. Either as a lifeform or as a bio weapon described in later movies. But that’s ok, the less you know the scarier it is. Scott and Cameron made excellent films. But the more you know about the alien, the less effective it gets. It doesn’t help that characters get more frustrating as the franchise goes on.
@treadstone1138
@treadstone1138 2 ай бұрын
@@woeshaling6421 I will admit that thinking it's an organism whose sole purpose is simply to procreate kind of makes it terrifying because it's almost like a virus. As an engineered by a weapon, kind of interesting but now that they're trying to say David bioengineered it I think is absolutely ludicrous and I will never subscribe to that theory. As much as I love the David character, that aspect was dumb and how the lore got retconned later on just made it more ridiculous. Both Prometheus and Covenant are amazing films visually. But sorely lacking in substance, especially Covenant. But I agree that the less you know about it, the better. Like Lovecraft said: the oldest emotion of mankind is fear and the oldest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.

This ages me but the trailer with the cracked egg sparked my interest in the movie. I then purchased the graphic novel, the art of Alien, and the making of Alien books before finally seeing the movie in the theatre. I purchased a film clip viewer of the movie, an Alien model and a giant Alien action figure. This wasn't my favorite movie at the time but I admired its realistic treatment of the crew through the acting and directing; the sequel being a comic strip/Hollywood-shallow action movie. However, for some reason, this movie captured my attention. It has been fun watching your reaction to it.

This was made in 1979 and computers were noisy as all hell back then, along with most automated machinery. The main reason was the tons of mechanical parts-magnetic storage media took the form of large reels of tape drives, and even the disk drives that dominated the later era of the '80s up to the 2010s/today have spinning disk platters, cooling fans, power supplies also had their own cooling fans and sometimes electronic components that can hum for various reasons. I can tell you, when the IBM PC XT I had in the early '80s booted up, it sounded, in many ways, louder than the Nostromo computer waking the ship back to life. In the modern computing era, with solid-state drives taking over and tapes having become relics, the noise has largely been reduced to just cooling elements, like fans (or, nowadays, liquid cooling, depending on the intensity of the computing rig). The whirring, clicking, and grinding has mostly vanished.

So the hypnotic beginning sequence with the strange noises and what looked like an alien as you said (It's actually an emergency helmet for the pilot to wear if there's a hull breach and they lose air) is all intentional foreshadowing of things to come. The strange noise of the computer starting meant to sound alien and it mirrors the "distress" signal. Also when you compare the sound to that of when Kane leans over the egg and the facehugger leaps out, they are very similar. The emergency helmet with the strange "mouth" happens to be where Kane sits foreshadowing the facehugger breaking through his helmet later on. The helmet is placed looking at the screen making you feel there's a creature controlling the craft; a similar theme to the space jockey they find fossilised. If you love this movie like I do checkout the vid "Bizarre subliminal foreshadowing in ALIEN" an excellent analytical breakdown of that sequence ;) ;)

Just wanted to recommend the new series "Shogun", it's great. :) Based on the novel with the same name by James Clavell (and there was a fantastic miniseries created already 1980), it's set in medieval Japan. You have political scheming for power, some wild action, fantastic performances, stunning cinematography, and highly evocative and haunting score.

Some of the equipment may seem outdated from a modern perspective, but it actually makes sense if you consider that the Nostromo is a towing vehicle. The company wants the highest possible return on investment, so they aren't going to spend the money to equip it with the most advanced technology. They would make sure the ship had what it needs to be functional, but that's all.

If we agree that it's impossible for the creature to grow from belly-burster size to as big as a large man so quickly, the most plausible explanation is that two full-grown aliens somehow stowed away on the shuttle, one wandering the ship killing the crew and the other finding its way into the shuttle control room and taking a nap.

You asked how does the Alien also known as the Xenomorph grow so quickly? here's your answer... In the movie "Alien," the creature known as the "Xenomorph" goes through a rapid growth process due to its unique life cycle. After hatching from an egg, the creature undergoes several molts, shedding its skin and growing larger each time. This rapid growth is a characteristic of the Xenomorph's biology, allowing it to reach its full size relatively quickly. Additionally, the Xenomorph's ability to adapt and evolve in response to its environment contributes to its formidable and fast-growing nature. I hope this helped answer your question.

The AVP movies put the timeline in modern day to fit with the Predator timeline which is also in the modern day. They were trying to give a reason for the company to be interested in the alien before the crew of the Nostromo knew about it. 3:44 Interesting point. Predators come to us in the present day, but we come to aliens in the future haha. 30:02 I can speak from experience in scaring people in haunted house attractions that some people do get so terrified that the can't move.

Consider that there was a secret directive to bring back the life form and it took a while for Ripley to decode the message through the ECIU computer of a mining tug vessel. It would stand to reason that the company already knew what the beacon meant and had other info. In my view, Ash was there to ensure the organisms survival from the minute the company found the distress signal. Ash (robot) probably had his orders transmitted to him before the crew even woke up in the first scene.
@PorterJustPorter
@PorterJustPorter 2 ай бұрын
@therewasacrookedman5892 Ash was clearly there to ensure the alien's survival. The fact that the other crew members didn't know makes Ash's actions consistent in retrospect. Yelling "Don't touch it" after it bursts from a chest, is one of those moments. My point, however, is that Ash was correct in not trying to kill it immediately. It has acid for blood... stabbing it with a knife at the dinner table would have killed the whole crew once the acid burns through the hull.

The Alien didn't eat the people. There is a deleted scene that shows what it did with their bodies. It doesn't really line up with what happens in part 2 though, so it's alright that it was cut out. When you watch Aliens, you should definitely watch the special edition!! The several extra minutes of run time is worth it. The sequels past part 2 ( Aliens) aren't as good imo, but Aliens is one of the greatest sequels ever made! This is a good time to watch Alien and Aliens, because Alien:Romulus hits theaters later this year.

According to Ridley Scott, the original ending had Ripley dying. She fired the harpoon gun, but it bounced off the creature, allowing the creature to close the distance and move in for the kill. Also, the creature would have made the final report of the USS Nostromo using Ripley's voice. Thanks, Nia!

These are Alien Xenomorphs named after James Cameron's second film: "Aliens". Originally these creatures came from the dark world of H.R. Giger and these creatures were never fully understood. But for them we can say that they have many subdivisions of beings doing different functions and at their head stands a Queen. A queen is individual for each hive. And every queen is another queen's enemy. Creatures in Aliens:2 are Drones, but this one here is a Queen Substitute in case they don't have a Queen in their ranks. These are special engineers capable of morphing their victims into eggs in order to continue (or start) their population. These creatures are not just designed for war, they are designed for Annihilation. These are parasites killing their enemy as soon as they are born from the womb of their enemy and as you have seen they grow very quickly, very quickly after their birth.

So the "pilot" (known as the "space jockey" unofficially) looks like that because of the condensation and eventual mummification. The condensation forms on the surfaces, drips down, brings with it minerals, those build up a layer with time and it gets to where it looks fused to the seat. So where does the condensation come from? Well... ...the egg chamber. 😁

The black actor, the late Yaphet Kotto caused quite a stir in the UK some years ago by claiming that he was Royalty and was related to Queen Elizabeth II. He mentioned it in many TV interviews and wrote about it in several books including his autobiography. Despite being somewhat ridiculed here, it turns out that he was indeed Royalty. Although it's not really clear if he was ever able to present the wealth of evidence he claimed to have to prove his links to the Late Queen Elizabeth, it is true that she had black heritage. So perhaps he was right all along about that too. 🤔🇬🇧
