Such a great movie. It really does catch you by surprise. The old metaphor of "don't judge a book by its cover" comes to mind. Clint Eastwood played an outstanding role.

I often think of My grandfather when I see this Movie, not cause he said racist things, but sometimes he did, it was more he was the last one, in, all his friends had passed away, he outlived two wives, and all the world had changed and in a way he was still there like this rememant to an old time, to me I think that would be the worst, all the world you knew and grew up in was gone but your still here.

I took my dad, who was a Korean war vet to see this movie. He laughed at all the wrong things that Clint said in this movie. However racist he was, he would give the shirt off his back to help anyone in need. I never could reconcile his hate and love at the same time.

Everyone is always so clueless when it comes to Denzels character getting whipped. That was the punishment for soldiers going AWOL, end of discussion. These soldiers weren't going to be treated with kid gloves.

Walt's two son and his grandkids are just weird to me. I understand that Walt is a seemingly cold and uncaring man but the way they all acted at their mom's funeral makes them all seem to be just not such great people.

Hitler to us is sort of an abstract but this was only 22 years after World War II. Imagine seeing a musical comedy now about the world trade center. Most of the audience probably knew someone that didn't come back from the war. Many of the men had been soldiers themselves. Yikes

Why wouldn't Simon do anything with Kayle? ... because her father is standing over him looking ominous. A lot of females miss how much this scene shows Mal as a father figure. Mostly people see him coming down on Kayle, not the fear a young man feels the first time he faces down a girls dad.

This was a fun movie but IMO, the very best version of "Treasure Island" was made for television starring Charlton Heston "Long John Silver", Christian Bale "Jim Hawkins", Oliver Reed "Billy Bones", and Christopher Lee as "Blind Pew".

I'm a little saddened that you didn't know the Vulcan neck pinch. I mean, they still make Star Trek movies and TV shows, just like they're still making Star Wars and Planet of the Apes media, so it kinda shocks me you've never come across that before. In the original series (and the reboot movies with Chris Pine as Captain Kirk), Kirk's first mate and Science Officer is an alien named Spock from the planet Vulcan and his neck pinch trick was his favorite way to incapacitate the bad guys they would encounter. If you ever watch Back to the Future, you may find some familiar references in that movie as well.

42:00 ish... This whole movie and what you are talking about the no bad student is the premise of the series Cobra Kai. It's a whole new perspective on this movie taken from the side you do not see in this movie. The saying goes, a lot depends on what perspective you are viewing it from.

Anne Rice did something similar with 'The Vampire Lestat' in conjunction with 'The Interview with the Vampire'. In the first book you really felt disdain (at least) with Lestat, but in the second book, looking from it from a different point of view, it totally changes.

First time listening to your reaction channel. Loved it. Subscribed. Thank you for letting us share in your viewing of this film and also for sharing about your family upbringing. I can relate to that, as my mom would hear curse words in a show and flip the channel to something else instantly. The morals she put in you made you who you are, even if you think she might have been too strick. The more lose the morals taught and shown to children, they carry that teaching as you carry yours to some degree. Same in with me.

One reason why Abuelita is so strict about the music ban is because Coco, who was just as rebellious as Miguel about music and repeatedly snuck out to go dancing (she met her future husband there) actually hurt herself dancing when Elena (Abuelita) and Victoria were kids and Imelda was still alive. Abuelita witnessed her mother hurting herself because of music. (It’s in the novel)

Shaw had to flog him. That was the proper form of military discipline. It would have been the same had Trip been a white soldier. Shaw understood he had to treat them 100% equal. He could not give the opponents of abolition any reason to point a finger due to a difference in training.

What a damned good analysis, you're one smart young adult. Or rather, a smart adult period. I was slightly too young to be drafted in Korea, and too old by 5+ years to be drafted in Vietnam but I can say that as another grouchy old white man; you've got real substance. I look forward to every video!
