For my Presets visit: johnnathancord... I assumed that after the recent Diodes announcement, the Klon KTRs would fetch even sillier prices on the used market. That hasn't happened (yet?). Not sure why. Any ideas? Has the announcement made it more obvious that they were a bit overhyped? Maybe those essential diodes were never essential?

John, I will build you a Klon clone! I can put it in a smaller enclosure (like the Archer) and do whatever custom graphics you want! I'd be stoked to see you shoot them out. Magical diodes are probably less than 10% of the sound and only truly come into play if the gain control is pushed past 2:00

One advantage to the large size of the Centura and original klon is that you can move the dials with your foot to tweak it as you play!

At the end of the day, the diodes are at the very end of the circuit in "Klon" style pedals. You won't truly hear the diodes unless you goose the gain and to be completely honest, I prefer that style of a circuit with the gain at a modest "middle of the road" type of setting to where it's breaking up a bit, but it's not quite saturated either. Similar to tube screamers. they become too nasally and congested when you turn the gain up too much. For the most part, I'm happy with the revised Tumnus circuit that is in the Wampler gearbox.

My favorite Klon clone is the HX Stomp Minotaur, and it's just the right size. 😁

Had a Klon KTR, bought it new and sold it after a few weeks. Dont get the hype.. Its also surprised me how light weight it was and how cheap it felt..

I currently have a friend’s ktr on loan to check out. I was quickly able to match its tone with my MXR Sugar Drive, which was loosely based on the Klon. It doesn’t hurt that the Sugar Drive was designed by Jeorge Tripps. I did two tests- one into the clean channel, and one into the dirty channel of my Orange Rockerverb 50 Mkii. It was surprisingly easy to match the tones to where I couldn’t tell them apart while having my son switch between them while not looking.

I have a Chinese Klon Klone and this same pedal was demoed by a well known You Tuber. The Klone was demoed against an original $5000 Klon and he was major surprised how very close it was to the original and costing a tenth or less than the original. The pedal was also demoed against the Ryra Klon clone, and the Wampler Tumnus and I think the J Rocket clones, and performed equally as good as these clones.

@@johnnathancordy The Archer. Such a nice, simplistic but beautifully built pedal. It is not like the Prince of Tone, or the Soul Food. Great if you like a little compression and mojo though.

The.type of "Diodes" used in overdrive and boost pedals can make quite decernable differences to the tone of a particular pedal, some more subtle than others. I make two boost pedals one that uses Germanium diodes, these diodes could be the same diodes as used in the original Klone, I purchased lots from Russia which you cannot get anymore. In the Germanium version of my boost pedals it has a warmer tone compared to my "Silicone diode" boost pedals which have more gain and a slightly brighter tone even though all the other components and circuit are the same in both pedals. Bothr offer slightly different flavours. So from my experience the type, model and quality of diodes can produce some differences in tone and output.

Yeh Gary! I think the thing that raises eyebrows might be Bill's sort of U-turn - from "these are essential" to....well...actually other diodes can sound pretty much the same so I'm using those?

The other interesting thing is that the diodes matter more when they are clipping. Many folks run their Klon with little gain and lots of volume.I.e. Those special diodes aren’t really doing much when the pedal is set like that. Folks are welcome to pay and use what they want. It’s fun and interesting to talk about. For me, the Soul food sounds fine.

I think prices haven’t increased further because buyers are starting to be priced out. Charts like the one you showed from reverb are just up up and away for several years now, and especially so in the last 18 months. I don’t think that can go forever. An interesting comparison of these could be: your favorite real Klon versus a Line 6 model versus a decent quality, moderately priced (say

one day people are going to realize that it's just a pedal, and if you want to make an investment, buying some index funds is a way better choice. tried every klon clone on the market and some originals and my choice is the Ceriatone box or the Mythos one (since I have one of Keith's special edition ones it has some sentimental value to me). But I feel the Red Snapper and Blue Note are better pedals in this genre anyway. these days originals are going for the same price as a whole two rock or nice stratocaster and I just cant see the point. overdrive pedals are the one thing where there are more direct substitutes than any part of the chain. at least delays or phasers or choruses or whatever have some sort of individual character that can be difficult to replicate.

I have watched these prices climb on the KTR over the last two years. Not a pedal I have ever lusted after. Hell, even the Analogman Prince of tone pedals are climbing.

Prince of Tone is really good. Best pedal I have found if you like your amp and just want a little more boost/drive/gain. I barely notice it's plugged in when not using.

When I borrowed your KTR they were very similar but I needed to put the dials in slightly different places to get the same sound

As the owner of both pedals, I would say don’t waste your money buying KTR, buy Centaur. They are not at the same league.

@@johnnathancordy Wow, I never even knew Bill Finnigan had a channel!?!?!... It was funny that he never went on camera tho, I think he knows what he's doing!... The Steisand effect anyone?. With regards his announcement about him no longer using the NOS diodes in the KTR's... (He said he hasn't 'run out' , he just won't use them in KTR's from this point...). I think he has just 'de-valued' his own efforts from here on in... But really we all know that things change over time so those older ones will just become the 'Green Label Japanese Boss Pedals'. They WILL go up in price eventually and will be the question on everyones eBay listing.... YES, it has the NOS diodes!... haha And Finally, that was hilarious that he confirmed Josh Scott's #002 is really #001!!!!!!... (But #1 is still #1 haha) Will the #001 Klon be the first Million Dollar pedal?. (Might take a few years, but it will happen!). Sadly, I cannot justify dropping that kind of money so I use a JRAD Archer, and I love it. Its a great circuit, I just wish BF would be a little more public and stop with the hiding...He's a great man and should take his bows a little more graciously but that's me... ;)
