The Brightin Star 28mm f2.8 lens is very unique!
This lens is based off the MS Optics lens and they have done a great job replicating and creating their own version of it.
These lenses are a fantastic talking piece and are certainly not optically perfect but definitely do the job and also give a tonne of character in the mean time.

I just got one, so far love the ergo and the colour, its actually similar in many ways to a vintage Summicron in rendering but with higher contrast. I am using it along with my M series Leitz lenses on a Nikon FF Z

Great review! However I want to propose a theory on the strange focus issue you are having in the background. I recently learned about optical vignetting when trying to figure out some issues with one of my lenses, where the tree branches were looking in focus in the corners of the frame that should have been out of focus. If you can, take a picture of Christmas lights out of focus, I predict that the bokeh balls will deform sharply in the corners of the frame. This phenomena will take high contrast objects and make them look like they are close to being in focus in the corners of the frame.

It is called focus shift when a lens changes focus when shifting the aperture.

But only on uncorrected lenses, generally cheap ones, and this one ain't cheap. At this price, better buy a good brand.

Have you tried the Ttartisans F2? (25mm and 50mm). They are just amazing, got some character but without compromising IQ. Great for everyday life documenting. Turns any Sony APSC (or a7C/zvE1) into pocket size beasts. And last but not least, they are aggressively cheap!

I have this lens. It actually works better with the Leica M bodies than the Sony bodies due to their thinner filter stack in front of the sensor. Hence, you would get sharper images near the corner once stopped down. But the field curvature is still there and it actually makes distant objects sharp. Pretty weird, huh? It also has focus shift due to its lens design without a floating glass element. I wouldn't use it on my Sony. I 'll just stick to the FE 28mm F2 or Samyang 35mm F2 pancake. On my Leica's, I mostly use this Brightin Star for street and for film. Even for that, it 's not my primary 28mm. The Brighin Star is made out of brass with a lacquer black paint. So it would age and blend in well with a black paint Leica MP.

@@JasonMorrisphotocinema yes, that's why tripod or more static and artistic shots, B-roll art video. Pictures you had taken from sideviews with lens reminded me opening scenes of some TV series etc.
