I kinda find it insulting, that a character who's abused is told that they're not feminist or active in their story. Cinderella didn't stand up for herself, becuase that would've meant homelessness, she stayed as a servant so that she could survive. Her night at the ball was her only chance for happiness. I'm not against on modernizing certain aspects of the story, but it can be done without insulting past versions.

I feel like mainstream media is taking the idea that a strong woman needs to be loud, quirky, completely rejects help from men, and at times super egotistical. Which is kinda stupid. A strong woman can also be kind and gentle. Literally any kind of woman can be a strong woman. I’m just kind of uncomfortable that all the “feminist” movies have the exact same maincharacter. Like literally the strongest woman I know is my friends mother. She never really speaks out loud and is always super nice. But she carries her family like a god damn champ.

Her strength is kindness and compassion,treating others with respect no matter what even when her life is at the lowest. The Fairy Godmother is,we could say,a magical being who decided Cinderella's kindness deserved a prize once and for all. She really didn't go to the ball after a man,let alone the prince himself,she wanted a night of freedom,fun and be away of her horrible family. Cinderella is already feminist,but people don't get that,Hollywood doesn't get that.

Also sidenote, I actually think the ball dress looks much better in the purple used for the promotional material than the white/peach coloring they used in the actual film. The purple actually makes all the details pop, and actually compliments Camila, but the white/peach just blends into everything around it. It always annoys me when marketing makes an outfit a much different color than what it actually is in the film. EDIT: Quite frankly though, the 1950 Cinderella is much more feminist than this garbage.

To my knowledge, cinderella's theme entirely is that she remains kind and gentle to everyone around her despite being a victim of abuse. She doesn't have to be portrayed as quirky, (unbarely) obnoxious and loud to make a her a feminist. Feminism isn't only about being bold, strong and outspoken but also being gentle, kind and empathetic to those around you. Thats what cinderella is and they why animals are drawn to her. She's also learns to know her worth and throughout many adaptations, cinderella is very resilient. So this cinderella makes no sense what so ever to "cinderella" as a whole concept.

I'm not even a historian. But the costume designs were really confusing for me. I kept thinking, "What period is this supposed to take place in?" Even if the movie wasn't intended to take place in any specific time period, the different costumes all the characters wore lacked cohesion.

I would have really liked if Ella had turned the ink into a highlight of the dress, maybe by adding more ink splotches or turning the ink into a focal point. It would highlight her skill and creativity as a dress maker, and give her agency over her problems.

The first feminist Cinderella was the 1950 on intentional or not because 1. She wasn't looking for a man or a prince it just happened. 2. Kept a good personality in a abusive home life. 3 Her positively and kindness brought the Fairy Godmother to her. 4. She saved herself by breaking out of the attic the stepmother locked her in with a little help from mice while the prince was not even in the scene. 5. She was smart enough the have her other glass slipper on it.

I think that part of why the feminism in this Cinderella comes off as tone deaf is because the portrayal of both Gwen and Ella is completely unrealistic. Both women live in a patriarchal society, where neither of them have any support from their family or anyone else. Both are highly ambitious and have grand dreams, but are constantly stopped because of various obstacles. In such a society, where they are both living lives where they feel trapped and yet have no one to save them, they wouldn't be the way they are portrayed. They feel like independent modern women that have transmigrated from our world into a restrictive society rather than people who have grown up being snubbed for their gender. In such an environment, they would have to persevere and take a lot of shit from others. They would also realistically be more patient and collected. They would have preconceived notions about how a woman is supposed to act and her duties in society, which is natural because they have never had anyone to subvert the standards society has set for them. Rather than yelling in the middle of the street after people refuse to buy her dress, it would have been much more realistic if Ella would have given up selling it, gone back and made improvements to her design, then tried to sell it again. If any woman/person from a marginalised community constantly preaches about how they are being mistreated by society, they become annoying and people start to avoid them. Ella, who has lived in this society for her whole life and known nothing else, would have known this truth subconciously and tried to overcome her problems in a quieter way than forcing people to buy her designs. She would have felt less entitled that way, and it would have shown her hard work. Also, regardless of how oppressed you are, if you show some sort of genuine promise, you will be recruited. And it may be as a servant or a stand-in, but there is someone in the world who would give you chance. I think this could have helped shown that people are not all 2D characters, and that women were still considered humans in historical times. Gwen, I feel like, should have been more cutting and practical, as well as refined and elegant. This is simply because she would have been educated on etiquette, and any deviation from it may have gotten her isolated in high society. To become queen, Gwen would have needed to first make herself exceptional, then shown it to her father and his ministers. When she had been acknowledged for having a brain, she would have focused on expanding her connections and influence and started quietly subverting the patriarchy, by installing more female workers in her own ranks as well as in the government (as much as she could have done with her own influence and under her father's nose). Then she would have had to convince her father that she, rather than her brother, was suited to become monarch. In the movie, she just came off as really lacking common sense. No one listens to someone who irritates them every time they meet. She's behaving like an immature child and expecting to be taken seriously. This is part of why the feminism in this movie is so bland: there is no portrayal of different women. Both Ella and Gwen are shown to be capable and annoyingly persistent, while also having revolutionary ideas that go beyond their time. Instead of being self-confident, they come off as arrogant, which really doesn't help in either of their cases.

We’ve had so many great cinderella adaptations, Ella enchanted, Ever after, A cinderella story even have aspects that can arguably have REAL feminist moments and actual strong female characters. The original Cinderella even has her story revolve around escaping her abusive family- we don’t need a new version that misses the mark. I appreciate the sentiment- a modern revision of a classic tale, but Cinderella has been updated so many times and made stronger many times that this film has to go out of its way to push its messages.

The problem with the story (and most other pandering entertainment) is the lack of truth behind it. I’m not talking about the existence of magic but concepts we know in our own lives to be true even if told metaphorically like the ancient original tales. If the movie wants to address current day feminist issues then the realities of what real women face should be honestly depicted. For example, Cinderella’s inability to be a dress maker would probably have more to do with a lack of income and materials than a law saying she cant. Maybe the step mother and sisters own the dress shop in town and they don’t let her implement her new innovative ideas because no one would want them. (Could be a cool idea for costuming that everyone wears an old fashion because of the monopoly but once Cinderella opens her new place the innovation spreads) Anyway, does that make sense? It’s not real.

Having them sing Somebody to Love was a huge misstep, it just reminded people they could be watching Ella Enchanted instead.

So basically, this movie took elements from all the other versions of Cinderella (like being sold to another suitor in Ever After, fighting to have her dream when others are trying to stop her (Cinderella 3 and Cinderella with Whitney Houston) Having the Prince NOT want to be the prince or be married (ALL the Cinderellas, but specifically Ever After again.) The stepsisters being ditzy and dumb and jealous (Cinderella with Whitney Houston) Having the stepmother try to manipulate Cinderella for her own gain (Disney's live action Cinderella). Cinderella arguing with the Prince about stuff (Ever After). There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING creative or unique about this movie. Its just vomiting out elements from other Cinderella stories.

It’s very obvious to me that this is leaning into girlboss feminism HARD. They keep trying to make these classic fairytales more feminist or socially aware, but nobody was asking for that. Most people are fine accepting these classics at face value, taking what we like and leaving what we don’t. The most insulting part to me is that this movie claims to be “tHe FIRsT FEmInIst CInDerellA” and “So DiveRse!” when we have the Lunar Chronicles. The Lunar chronicles is a series of sci-fi books based off fairytales. Cinder, the over all main character and Cinderella equivalent, is a perfect example of a strong female character written well. She owns a business, works for what she wants all on her own, and is extremely independent. Cinder is also Asian and disabled. This is 10 times better rep that’s anything this movie could bring without it feeling forced or not genuine.

I love that everyone in the entire world, except those in Hollywood, is sick of James Corden. I really could’ve done without the scenes of him as a humanoid mouse. They could have developed the stepsisters more instead, which was really needed. You had a stellar singer like Maddie Bailillo, and turned her into a backup singer? Minnie Driver is a legitimately talented singer and comedienne, and she hardly says anything until the third act? So many missed opportunities.

I was a teen in the early 2010s and though I’ve never seen it, Cinderella in this movie just seems like the misogynistic “not like other girls” role that many of us tumblr users liked to act like at the time. Lol the fact that we apparently haven’t aged out of that trope is just sad. After all these years.

This movie feels like on of my high school's unlicensed senior plays, specifically the Aladdin "inspired" one. It even has the modern slang, terrible pop covers, utter bastardization of the story, shoehorned characters and sublots, and the faux-progressivism.

I hate the way these older directors scroll through Twitter for 2 seconds and assume that’s what younger viewers want to see. Literally making Princess Gwen and Ella love interests is a stroke of genius

The original Disney Cinderella was ACTIVE AND VOCAL. She was just also abused and abused people know when it's worth it to open their mouths. That's not un-feminist that's self preservation. This Cinderella hardly seemed abused, her step mother's reaction to her wanting to own a business wasn't any different to what it would have been to her own daughters. They didn't better it, they flipped the script completely. Also, can we talk about how hideous and cheap the glass slipper was!!

When has everything targeted to girls become so terrible?? Netflix is for sure the worst in this department. But this cinderella movie is also a trainwreck. I still love the 90s/2000s chickflicks like 10 things i hate about you, wild child, legally blonde etc and i think they age so well because they weren't trying too hard to make a significant statement or to be feminist and woke. The costumes look like... you know... costumes. Not like actual clothes from that fantasy world. At least that was the impression I got while watching it. It´s the kind of movie I watch thinking "oh, we gotta pretend it is real" instead of simply getting immerse on the history. (I don´t know if I expressed myself well, english is not my native language so my vocabulary is pretty short) And I get that impression while watching other movies and series as well.

Ever After will always be my favorite Cinderella adaptation. She was kind, independent, and the movie gave its message without having to hit you on the head with it

Lilly James 2015 Cinderella is by far my favorite. The dress was amazing, the cinematography was gorgeous and the characterization of Cinderella was perfect. They got who Cinderella was; a kind, gentle woman, who despite her situation, still sees the best in people, and even forgives her Step Mother at the end even though she treated her like garbage the entire film. To me that is a true feminist message: A woman who stands by who she is, and doesn't let her shortcomings change that.

Honestly the version you described of having a love story between the princess and Cinderella with subverting expectations and having the prince be the god mother would make it infinitely better- and have a slightly more serious tone wich would ground it more and have a message worth remembering. It would also make some of the things that didn’t quite land (such as the stepmothers insistence that Cinderella marry a rich man) work. And it would make something more of gwens character other than just some throw a way lines or a plot device both in the story and for the writers to use as female empowerment. Talulah grieve is a talented actress both in comedy and drama and the film totally underused her. Also that storyline just sounds so godamn cute

They did my Cinderella so bad. Cinderella would never be do disrespectful towards people such as sitting on someone's statue. She's sweet, kind, gentle and calm. She has a strong belief and resolve in her goals and beliefs. This film encapsulates “girlboss feminism” and I’m glad we as a society are reaching the zenith of this. We went from Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5”, which was important for us, and then got to Devil Wears Prada-MLM-shilling-neoliberal capitalism.

The worst thing about this Cinderella is that it ALMOST did something with the prince. He prefers the company of men, its played off as a joke, (likely to imply immaturity) but the way thier chemistry feels way more natural than with Ella could've been something. We couldve had a movie that actually criticised the patriarical nature of the kingdom, went in depth about how everyone suffers under it regardless of social standing or gender (the prince, Gwen, the stepmother, Ella), the actual consequences that would stick as the story unfolded, instead of just one off jokes. I wanted to see Gwen do her research, I wanted the stepmother's urgency to get her daughters married emphasized on, I wanted the prince to be conflicted about his dedication to his duty vs his Friends. Since the patriarchy is a societal system it's society should have changed in some way by the end instead of the person holding the power shifting hands. There couldve been something amazing there, but alas there wasnt

Imagine if she actually WORKED the glass to make the shoes, that way it would have been a total heartbreaking moment when she loses one. Maybe she promised she would take them to the Queen for the interview, and the prince is the only one who can give it back to her. Maybe Lady Tremaine was the one who found it and didn’t want to give it to her because that way she would lose the opportunity and locks her up. SO many more emotional moments just by changing one simple element.

I still believe the dressmaking aspect could have been a nice addition to this retelling. I firmly believe that the Stepmother should have had a dress shop, forcing Cinderella to do every design but receive none of the credit. That way she needs Cinderella, and only keeps her around to keep the family afloat. But Cindy wants to make a statement, change fashion - become something, but the current trends sell. This is no time to be a dreamer, Cindy - dreaming doesn't bring in the sweet cash. Instead of the Fairy Godmother, the dress should have been of her own creation - a secret that she's been working on behind closed doors. The stepmother isn't fooled in the slightest though, and quickly decides to use this to her benefit. Cindy catching the Prince's attention can save them, but the thing is - Cindy wants more from life. She doesn't want to be a princess. That's the conflict. Is her duty to save her family, no matter how bad they treat her - or go for her passions, possibly losing everything in the process? Perhaps give one of the stepsisters actual agency - make her a friend that the stepmother is willing to marry off to a creep just to give the family money. In this time period, for their family to be saved - women need to marry into money, no matter the cost of their happiness. The stepmother is no stranger to this - she married for love once, but he died and left her nothing but two beautiful daughters. The next man, she was given away to (her father had seen to it personally) - but he too died and left little else but a good name and a series of debt unknown to them until his passing. He too had been a dreamer, but he royally failed them. It's love and belief that keeps Cinderella from hating the situation her father left her in. At times, however, it's hard. She must constantly be in battle with herself due to her parents failures. But that's life, you gamble - and sometimes you win, other times you lose. Does that mean you give up? Does that mean Cinderella must learn to know her place and do as she's told? Especially if it saves them from financial ruin?

IMO despite the desperate attempts to make classic tales more “woke”, feminist or inclusive, I honestly still believe the values in the original tales are superior. Maybe Cinderella is blonde haired and blue eyed in the original portrayal, and some may argue this is offensive or that the story is in someway undermined and superficial - the original Cinderella promotes values of hard work, humility, respect, dignity despite enslavement, being a dreamer even when your dreams are constantly crushed, and good prevailing against all odds (just to name a few). These are far superior moral truths when compared to those represented in the modern adaptions of the story, particularly as they transcend race, sex, or any other personal circumstances - they are truly universal in nature. It is only a superficial analysis of the classic stories which would conclude that it is limiting to women or undermines female power, when in reality it does the exact opposite

Why is the Prince Charming character so unremarkable? They make every other character distinctive in some way, but for that one we get the equivalent of a slice of white bread without butter…. So generically boring that you forget he exists as soon as he is off screen.

I absolutely hate when people give this pandering corporate version of feminism to Cinderella to most, because while literally any other traditional Disney tale has old fashioned aspects probably need to be updated, Cinderella really doesn’t. People like to point out that she’s passive in her own story, but when you really look at all the aspects of her life on paper, Cinderella is really just an abuse victim that has someone in a position of power over her preventing her from getting out on her own. I don’t think the original author of the fairytale or even the animated Disney version meant to do that - they want the stepmother to be cruel but I don’t think they necessarily thought “child abuser” when making her - but when you measure what she does to Cinderella by our modern standards, that’s what you arrive at. So when people say she’s just waiting on a man to save her, not only do I know they’re not really paying attention, but they also accidentally become a victim blamer. Once again, I think the narrative does this on accident rather then on purpose, but ultimately Cinderella is someone whose not in her situation because the narrative doesn’t let her try to save herself, but because her stepmother is always watching her, keeps her from interacting with people, and has cut her off from all means of financial independence. Like most victims of abuse she doesn’t get out until she gets outside help, not only from the prince but the fairy godmother. I think it would be really easy to “update” Cinderella by keeping nearly the exact same plot but just changing the tone to a sort of thriller where Cinderella is trying to survive and find help under her stepmother’s watchful eye. Instead of the message focusing on a milquetoast non controversial form of feminism, it can be about how people stand by and watch others abuse kids because it’s “their right to raise them however they want” or they’re “just strict” or “if a kid is complaining they’re just being disrespectful because the adult is always right”.

one thing i’ve never seen pointed out in this movie is that in the ‘climbing on the statue’ scene ella commits treason? that’s 50 shades of illegal. i have no clue how in universe she didn’t get executed or at least arrested for that.

Was so confused when the other stepsister was like “It’s over” when seeing Cinder’s dress. Both the stepsister’s dresses looked way better to me.

As a Theatre Kid™, what I have learned over the years is that you CAN NOT mix musical theatre trained people with pop/folk singer trained people. Yes, the pop/folk singers sing well, beautiful even, but they do not mix with theatre people. It will always end up sounding not good.

In retrospect this movie is like a badly pasted collage of good times and messages from other movies: .1) Cinderella wants to sell dresses / or follow her dreams before getting married - that's erika in barbie: the princess and the pauper .2) Contemporary pop music - Ella enchanted .3) Princess defying ideas of an unjust society / government - Daniel in ever after .4) inclusive cast - 90s adaptation of rodgers and hammerstein and so on ... And after seeing this adaptation I am in urgent need to see ever after again, just to get rid of the cringe 🙄

I think one of my main issues with this version of cinderella is that honestly i don't think feminism *alone* as a theme is strong enough or creative enough. there've been soooo many versions of the cinderella story, and you could argue that almost every single one of them touch on feminism/the power of femininity in some way. i wish there was more focus on the difference in class, rich v poor, older vs younger generations, shit even self confidence and self love would've felt like stronger messages. of course i'm always going to love when there's some girl power scenes, and i did enjoy the daughter ending up queen, but i think making the main theme "girls are good enough!" is just not the strongest message, it's slightly outdated (as i think we all know girls can run a business in this day and age) plus it's just not very groundbreaking or creative. just my two cents lol

They could have made the seamstress story without mushing together the Cinderella plot, at least not in an obvious way. I mean, rags to riches is a phrase created *for* that reason and there's countless of stories that follow that pattern. But then of course no one would have cared. Hollywood knows the recipe by now. Adults will (mostly, not all of them) hate watch to be able to make snarky twitter comments and kids will watch it bc well "It's Cinderella"

Ella Enchanted will always be my favourite version of Cinderella, since the Heroine ultimately saves herself in the end. The 2015 version, Ever After and A Cinderella Story are also decent.

When I learnt that the costume designer for Bridgerton worked on this movie, it immediately explained some of the mess of this movie. Many of the costumes in Bridgerton are terribly fitted, at best, and all over the place.

My fav live action was the one where Cinderella wears the big blue dress. Like the big dark blue one. I really love how they did the backstory for her parents

Honestly this remake was not necessary at ALL. There's basically a whole ocean of Cinderella adaptations, why even bother doing another one? In my opinion, Ever After is and always will be superior.

I particularly dislike how this movie completely ignored the role that Cinderella’s father had in her life. In the original adaptation the main reason she stays is because she promised her father on his deathbed that she would keep the family together (he sincerely believed she needed a mother figure in her life since the passing of her birth mother which is why he remarried). Cinderella’s kindness to her stepmother despite her abuse is a testament to her character and keeping her promise to her father and honoring his memory. We need more of these figures in movies not the girl boss trope Hollywood keeps pandering

The main character: is cruel and condescending to every other charecter. The movie: this is feminism How...did they not see that? Like, you can believe in women's rights and equality and also not hate men and traditionally feminine women or poor women who are too busy trying to survive to fight for their rights

German versions often show how she was treated as a child, highlighting the abuse and showing how strong she is. They could have done so much with this story but nah, let's make a girl boss movie.

Best Cinderella is Ever After, followed by Brandy's Cinderella. Both were drastically different in their portrayals of the character and were spot in. Brandy's was fun whimsical and charming. Drew Barrymore's eas progressive intriguing and also feminist and powerful. Both were executed very well. Camilla was actually funny but she can't sing and that was extremely distracting. The story was bland and the dress and hair was so disappointing. The shoes were cute though.

Another movie that it could have been compared to is Enchanted with Amy Adams, she ends up as a costume designer, it had great music and costumes and was so funny!

This movie looks like marketing research on “what the kids like“ but they never ever asked an actual young person what they like is like- 1- that Camila Cabello, the kids like to hear her and she is Latina? Great 2 woke points at the same time, 2- Oh Indina Menzel accepted to be in our movie? Great, we can have Disney fans too, and so on. Even having Pierce Brosnan kind of looks like they are saying- hey grandmas and moms you guys love Mamma Mia right? We have Pierce here. I also, as a Latina, from Latin America, born and raised, I didn't like that Cabello said she was the FIRST Latina Cinderella like we don't exist right? Just in my country alone we had more than one Cinderella Movie(TV and motion picture), and no she wasn't the first in the US either, Selena Gomez was Cinderella before her and she is Latina, also HBO's Happily Ever After cartoon show from the late 1990s guess what? Their version of Cinderella is Latina, and I do believe we could have more Latina Cinderella's that I don't know about, so yeah she sounded extremely arrogant for someone that doesn't have much experience. You know they could have done a new version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella and update it, they clearly liked that movie because they draw influence a lot from the 1998 version, including hiring the same costume designer, is like this generation COULD have newer version of this same musical with a newer take of the story, be simple and to the point. Oh well, I'm glad I'm from the generation that had Brandy's Cinderella and Drew Berrymore's Cinderella as modern takes that still holds up while respecting what came before.

This is also why “modern reimagining” with values from the modern day without applying it appropriately to the context that it’s in often sounds and feels so fake. That’s why Hillary Duffs Cinderella makes more sense, it’s set in modern day, so the modern values make sense.
