I don't regret seeing The Last Airbender in theaters on opening night, because it gave me one of my favorite anecdotes. The moment the end credits started rolling, just as people were about to rise from their seats, some guy in the front row bellowed "That was SHIT!" and hurled his 3D glasses at the screen before storming out. The theater erupted in approval for the man who spoke for us all.

The loss of innocence comment was painfully accurate for me. I was in Middle-School when The Last Airbender came out. My dad had never watched the show, and before I was able to get him to enjoy some Ghibli films and Attack on Titan over the last few years would never go out of his way to watch animation outside of my presence. He did know however, how much I liked the show and was excited to see the movie. Before that point, I hadn't really developed taste in media. I just really enjoyed movies and TV shows. So he took me out to see the movie in the theatre, and oh my god my world was never the same. I absolutely hated it, but I didn't want to tell my dad such because that was the activity that we spent one of his agreed upon with my mom days to be with me. Years later, I was roasting the shit out of the movie with my cousin when visiting for Christmas, and his response was "Oh thank god. I couldn't believe you actually enjoyed that tire fire of a movie." I still have to try to get him to watch the actual show some day.

The main problem in here is the structure of production, when making high budget films producers need collateral to fall back on, that usually comes as big names in the industry since that's bound to bring in viewers, if you're trying to convince an executive to make a live action adaptation of a popular work they will stick as closely as possible in all the marketable characteristics, the industry doesn't want revolution or change, it wants predictable results

Evolution was bad but Super wasn't that much better either, he had like 2 decades to think about a continuation and GT as an example of what not to do, but nah BoG was about the most decent thing that came out of Super, then everything after felt like toriyama was just barely trying, the anime being rushed just months after Resurrection of F, so i wouldn't give them much credit as to say "not just as something to milk money out of" cuz its definitely the case lets be real.

Speed Racer is my dad’s favorite anime - grew up with it and has so many toys from his childhood with him. When the movie came out, of course he dragged me to theaters to watch and I happily went, knowing enough of the series through him, and I was so blown away at how cool and how much of an anime it felt for a film. When we heard about the reactions from others online, it made my dad a little sad, but he only said “if they say it to my face, then we will just have to watch it together!” He has several DVDs of the movie now and every once in a while will rewatch it.

Speed Racer is one of my genuine favorite movies of all time, I love it just as much as an adult as I did when I was younger. The writing is so tight and symbolic in ways a young audience can grasp (especially the contrast in Pops' talks with Rex and Speed where he's determined to never push his son away again), but the themes are adult enough to hit hard once you grow up and understand just how unfair the world is. It's an incredibly emotional story only made better by absolutely fantastic action, and you find yourself truly rooting for Speed even in the first race. He and the Racer family are set up so quickly and effectively as characters that it beats most first episodes of anime I've seen, and the climax of the movie ties their arcs together so satisfyingly. You get a better sense of Speed's family and friends supporting him to victory than most Shounen manage with the Power of Friendship, and it makes the cartoony, extravagant world feel completely real. It's such a good time, and I always come away from it glad to have seen it again! Plus the soundtrack is boss, I love to listen to it while doing mundane work.

TLA has 2 ideas I think are actually interesting: - Aang’s tattoos being more intricate than the solid blue was a decision I will wholeheartedly defend. - the climax where Aang wards off the Fire Nation invasion by showing not just his power, but his restraint. The action tells us and the invading army that he could wipe them out at once, but chooses mercy. I don’t think the arc is set up well in the rest of the film at all, but it would be good in foreshadowing his future internal conflict over how to handle the fire lord. I guess a third thing is that Aang’s halfhearted acceptance of his responsibility as the Avatar at the end sold his internal conflict pretty well. By no means do I think these things save the movie, I just think they’re interesting adaptational changes.

It's still absolute horsecrud that Firebenders need fire around them to begin with. But since they broke it anyway, at least the scene with Iroh being the exception was kinda cool. Kinda. Hamasaki Ayumi's song Rule from her single Rule/Sparkle was used for Dragonball Evolution's international promotion, and it's actually pretty good. I haven't watched the movie myself so I can't _confidently_ say it's the one good thing to come from it, but I'll say it anyway: it's the one genuinely good thing Dragonball Evolution is responsible for.

As a kid I remember going to see the Speed Racer movie with my family. I remember having a pretty good time, but the one thing that sticks out in my memory was the subtle for a kid ‘monkey wrench’ pun used during a fight scene and I was real proud of myself for noticing that.

Happy to see people acknowledging how much fun and special Speed Racer is, my dad who grew up with the original loved it when it came out. And Crying Freeman getting some love too, one of my mom favorites, and we sometimes watch it again, it's a nice level of cheesiness that only the early 1990s could deliver.

Never ever end your first movie on a cliffhanger - i think that should be a damn law. Make the first film self-contained and determine the audience interest before you build interconnected sequels.

I can’t wait to see the internet implode on itself if a sequel introduces Alita’s trans younger brother named Sechs. Whether they change this, leave it alone or remove him entirely, people are going to be angry about it being transphobic, “too woke”, or both.
@kongk4
@kongk4 Жыл бұрын
Kinda... One is that there was no sequel planned initially, in fact the cliffhanger ending was nearly done at the last minute. It was suppose to be open ended in "A New Hope" sort of way, but they were very optimistic for its grossing success and threw an uncredited Edward Norton in with a slapped together mad scientist outfit. Also two, about that grossing... you're not technically wrong but not right either. It didn't do too well in the US but everywhere else garnered it just enough returns to even out its budget... supposedly. Basically it did as well as the Warcraft movie. This evened out "success" is part of why Disney is on the fence with continuing it. Most likely spanning it off into a low budget TV show.

@Vespyr_

I hope so too. But it's honestly too good a project for Disney. Once Fox was acquired I knew a story as intense as Gunnm was never going to be properly produced by Disney. Cameron had his chance for over 20 years and chose to wait until it was no longer his choice. He wanted his legacy to be about a derivative group of blue aliens and not the dark cyberpunk masterpiece that inspired him in his youth. That was his choice, sadly.

I think it's interesting that you like Death Note live action! I really did not like it when I watched it, but I get that perspective as someone who loved Netflix's Cowboy Bebop. My parents actually watched it initially and had me watch it with them once I caught up and we had a blast. We adored it all, and it did a great thing by opening my Mom's mind to watching anime from the original Cowboy Bebop to Death Note to Wolf's Rain. It may not be perfect but I really, really like it and I get why some people may hate it even if I hard disagree.
@ElvisMaximus1
@ElvisMaximus1 Жыл бұрын
I think netflix beepboop is super interesting because it's just SO close to working. If there was ever an anime that could be adapted to a live action show pretty easily, it would be bebop 100% So much of the production is so good, it's just the script is such a huge missed opportunity. I really don't like the increase in focus on Vicious and Julia in general (not to mention the take on Vicious' character.. or that his wig looks like it'd be featured in a Mega64 video), but I still don't even think that's the biggest issue with the script. The biggest issue is the whedon-ization of the characters imo. Everyone is quipping and sarcastic all the time, and Faye got it by far the worst which is a shame as she's my favorite character in the series. The biggest red flag that we were headed that way imo was when they did an interview and talked about how the world of Bebop is a hopeful take on the future, and that honestly couldn't be farther from the truth in both the way the world looks and the way the series runs. It's not even a bad show really, it's just never going to bebop for me and it's so disappointing
