As an older guy, it's such a beautiful movie. He's had that life, yet she has so much to explore. And meeting her at such a crossroads in the young lady's life, he respects this. Sharing a time and a moment, that can forever be remembered as perfect. Fantastic reaction/review.

I'm a 65 year old guy who has been lucky to have experienced this sort of connection a few times in my life, the end had me in tears.

One of my top 3 favorite movies. It's just magical and it speaks to me in so many levels. Sofia Coppola wrote this script with Bill Murray in mind. She said if he wouldn't have taken the role she wouldn't have made the movie. I read somewhere that what he whispers to her at the end is something in the lines of "I will never forget what happened between us"

I like how nothing was easy in this film (except maybe the lounge singer), e.g., Bill and Scarlett never made love, even though they were drawn to each other, which would have been the easy path to take, then have them feel guilty around their partners, etc., creating cheap, cliché melodrama and dramatic irony. Also, their significant others, though often showing insensitivity, detachment, and self-centeredness -- were not portrayed as monsters, but mostly just disconnected from their partner’s feelings/unhappiness/lack of fulfillment, but not maliciously, so it’s hard to just write them off as evil and be all “Bill and Scarlett forever….” It also showed how easy it was for these two to connect on some levels (emotionally absent significant others), but not on others (age difference, little to talk about other than their loneliness). The age thing shouldn’t matter, yet it does here, and I liked how they didn’t have Bill get all apologetic when Scarlett found him the morning after with the lounge singer, which would have been the easy, cliché thing to do, and she didn’t get all upset and hurt, which would have been the go-to reaction. She knew instinctively that this man is simply not on her wavelength sexually (sure, it was a drunken one-night stand, but the implication was there that he is drawn more to women closer to his own age). It’s definitely a “vibe” film, and the vibe is loneliness amid what should be a happy existence, a young woman with a husband on the rise professionally and a married former movie star who has to make a living doing commercials overseas (at least that’s the implication, in real life, stars in their prime often do commercials and other projects overseas, particularly in Japan, where they eat up U.S. culture). This unhappy-amid-splendor thing actually is old hat as a theme, but here, it’s taken in so many fresh directions. But yeah, you gotta be in “a mood.” Late January is as good a time as any for a reflective film like this, with people taking stock of their existence. (The claustrophopic hotel backdrop made it feel like a winter’s tale, when people are cooped up and often contemplative. I think the only external shot was their goodbyes at the end.) Speaking of their goodbyes, they also avoid the standard character transformations that movies often have. It’s never suggested that either character had changed much at all as they parted. They simply had this magical connection and time with each other, but they both are returning to their regularly scheduled existences (as neither indicated that they were unhappy enough to leave their SO), with only this fond memory resulting from their adventure at the hotel.

Lost in Translation is probably my top 5 movie! You watched this when the movie was close to 20 years old and you did the research on what Sofia Coppola was going through, pointing out intricacies of how her experience shaped the movie. The movie is top notch and your reaction to it is really great work. I really appreciate it!

Bob actually whispers “I have to be leaving, but I won't let that come between us.” I think I like it being unknown better. A rewatch of Her is very interesting since Sofia’s indictment of Spike was so brutal. This real life example of the Rashomon effect really drives home that we are heroes in our own story and others narratives about us are perhaps massively different. Was it Spike who checked out on the relationship or did Sofia end things on a whim and destroy Spike’s happiness. We will never know. They will probably never know but we got two amazing films from what seems to have been and insanely painful event in both their lives…

I love this movie so much, and I love that it wasn't a love story, nobody cheated on anyone and they didn't end up together, it was just two people having a deep connection because they were both lost in life

The problem is for relationships to be healthy both people must continue to grow as people, however there is no guarantee that they will grow in the same direction, then what do you do?

Bill Murray's first dramatic role was the remake of Razors Edge. When thinking of comedians doing drama, shouldn't forget Tom Hank's and Robin Williams.

I saw this at 14 and it really changed how I viewed movies as entertainment, and I realized what a huge range film covered. This and finding the IFC channel. Great reaction but to be honest I could have used another few minutes of your thoughts at the end.

Johansson was VERY young in this film, only 19 I believe. Her previous notable work was the teen best friend in "Ghost World"

I rarely watch these reactions to movies because I wish I could watch the WHOLE movie with the KZfaqr, but I'm really glad I watched this one. I had no idea that Sofia Coppola was married to Spike Jones at one point, and that he made "Her" after Lost In Translation (potentially as a response to LIS). That does make the movie even more tragic and emotional. Thank you for pointing that out 👍.

Some very real animosity towards John seems personal to me.He was there for business and had to do his job, it wasn't a family vacation.

My favourite film ever. Followed by Vanilla Sky and then La La Land is probably in my top 10 too. I clearly get so much from this type of story. Lost in Translation impacted me for about a week after seeing it. These two soulmates, almost seemingly by mistake or glitch, running into each other in the same universe when they're not supposed to, and understanding that. They knew. They knew they couldn't be together. In the universe where they're meant to be together, they will, but not here, they can't, and that's such a heavy thing to swallow. The ending seems to make some people happy, but not me. It can be taken in 2 ways, the happy ending or the sad ending and I prefer the one I already explained. Seems you take it that way too. The rumours of what he whispered fuel the speculation, there's been a ton of audio work done by fans to hear it properly. Have you seen Vanilla Sky? I won't spoil it incase you haven't, but the ending of that film is also similar. I think a lot of people misunderstand that ending, it's just sad full stop. I really want to see another film of Sofia's called The Virgin Suicides too but I can't find it anywhere to watch. Might need to pick it up physical.

Suntory Whiskey is available in limited quantities in the US and was the subject of the commercial Bill Murray was filming. Someone did a translation of what the director says in authentic Japanese into English and the contrast with the aide mistranslation is a hilarious comedy of errors.

Adam Sandler in Punch Drunk Love is IMO his best dramatic role.

I've always liked this film - but "enjoyed"? Hmmm... I do love the ending, though, and the uselessness of speculating on those whispered words. Whatever they were. Later, when I saw OUTSOURCED (an American exec goes to India to set up call-centers, then has an affair with his #1 helper), I was reminded of LOST IN T because, at the end of the affair, the woman tells him not to be sad, that this was HER affair that she'll carry with her forever 'n ever. That film ends with much the same sweetness of accepting what is given to us.

Difference is : Her..bad..Lost in Translation 👏 brilliant..

boys love girls. i think it is the wrong way to think about this movie as a romance or romantic. it is difficult to articulate all of the nuance of an entire film and get into how men and women think but i don't believe this has very much "romance". it is how proper boys love girls. it is far more innocent. in the bed scene Bill Murray is in a full suit trying to explain his abhorrent self-dread in the kindest terms to give light to her future. many examples of this in the movie. this is more a father-daughter film than a romantic love story. this is boys being boys to girls who are girls.

A lovely film. It would have been all wrong and creepy if anything had happened romantically between them. After all she was 17 and he was in his fifties. I know she was playing a 22 year old but 22 year olds do not find grizzled fifty year olds attractive. It's a film about loneliness and alienation in probably the most alien place for westerners.
