Something important to consider is that Ariel didn't give up her life for Eric. She was always fascinated in the human world and just transferred that feeling to his figure (because was the first real contact she had with the world she ever wanted). Conquering Eric was conquering the human world and no longer being part of the world where your father doesn't even let her have the things she loves.

Personally I think that's very dramatic...He wouldn't let her have human things, he never said she couldn't have things she didn't like. And he was very happy when he learned Ariel was in love (and he didn't even know who it was), that shows me he was very open to letting her have what she wants. But that's my opinion.

Originally, Ursula was supposed to be Triton’s sister, but she was banished for some crime, that’s why she’s trying to get the throne now and feels that it should be hers. But they cut this plot line out, so now she’s just a very evil and ambitious version of the original fairy tale Sea Witch.

This film literally saved Disney's animation department, as they were on the verge of going bankrupt due to a string of box-office failures and a lack of clear leadership following Walt Disney's death. This film proved to be a massive success, renewed interest in animation as a medium and began the Disney renaissance, which is where all those beloved classics like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Hercules and Mulan among others came from

@speedracer2008
@speedracer2008 Жыл бұрын
17:56 Yes and no. While Ursula does make it clear that if Ariel doesn't succeed, she belongs to her, she neglects to mention that she'll also go out of her way to screw over Ariel if she seems to make any progress in the deal. In fact, when it seems Ariel has succeeded in winning the Prince's heart through true love, she ruins the moment to put a stop to it. Not to mention, she disguises herself as a woman and puts Eric under mind control to keep him from falling in love with Ariel. All of this makes it clear that Ursula's deal was underhanded and that she had no intention of rewarding Ariel if she succeeded.
@fcv4616
@fcv4616 9 ай бұрын
Indeed. Because Ursula is a stand-in for the devil in this film, and as such she was never going to be fair. That's why she managed to trick dozens if not hundreds or even thousands of other merfolk before. In fact, there's a scene the creators drew in the story board that never made it to animation. A young merman has made a deal with Ursula too (I can't remember what he wanted originally) in exchange of moon flowers. However, Ursula knew he'd never be able to find them within the timeframe of the contact, because those flowers wouldn't bloom until months later. When he fails, she transforms him into one of her creepy-looking polyps. Thus, Ariel wasn't the only one who was too naive or vulnerable too fall for her tricks.

Ariel didn't realize she was dancing on Ursula's puppet strings. If Ariel did kiss Eric when she had the chance maybe on the first evening... Maybe the voice could have flown to Ariel and Ursula would be furious like "URGH! That was a lucky shot!" If were any solution other than Ursula's machinations, I had just wished the solution presented itself...

I am so stoked you did this one! As a Danish person, I was practically raised on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales, and The Little Mermaid is probably my favourite one. But the Disney version always made me a lot less sad because of how amazing the songs and the singing are, And YES, Sebastian *is* an underappreciated king! Also, we don't know if you have legs or how many, but based on what we can see, you don't look like Ursula, except maybe for the eye shadow xD ps. The voice of Ariel in the Danish version is Norwegian singer Sissel Kyrkjebø. I guess Disney didn't like the sound of an authentic Danish voice... In the original story Ariel didn’t feel in love with the Prince that easily. After saving his life she visited his kingdom and found out everyone liked him as their king. Then, she discovers that if a mermaid kisses a human, she can have a human soul (which are eternal unlike merpeople’s souls) and that is what moves her to turn into a human and try to kiss him. Is until she lives with him as his maid that you can see the love story developing. She always wanted to belong in the Human world, and Eric was only a part of that world
@jessecaldwell9781
@jessecaldwell9781 9 ай бұрын
Somewhat. It was a bit more complicated than that. Mermaids do not have an imortal soul like humans. They live for 300 years then turn to see foam. The witch cut out the mermaid's tongue. She would never speak again. The deal was that if he fell in love with another, she would die the day following the prince's wedding and turn to sea foam. Her sisters traded their long hair for a dagger. Her instructions were to kill the prince, and when his blood touched her legs, they would turn back into a tail, and she could return to the sea with them. The love that she had for the prince prevented her from killing him, and the fact that the prince actually loved her (not in the romantic way) earned the mermaid an imortal soul. She threw herself overboard, died, and went to heaven. This anime version follows the original story very closely. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mrqphZh-3pirhXU.html

If you look into the background, Ursula is Ariel's aunt. King Triton and Ursula are the children of Poseidon. When the old god died, he left his son his Trident and his daughter a shell necklace. It is this necklace, inherited from her father, that enables Ursula to have magical power. Rumours include that Ursula is King Triton's older sister, once queen of the Atlantica. When Triton grew up and matured to the throne, he forcibly took the crown and Trident from his sister. and allowed Ursula to stay in the palace. However, Ursula and her followers, who thought that she was wronged, tried to dethrone Triton. When Ursula failed, she was driven into dark waters by her brother.

The Broadway musical gives a back story of Ursula. She was actually King Triton's sister which would make her Ariel's Aunt. When Ursula and Triton's father was dying, he split the kingdom in half and Ursula acted like a brutal tyrant. She got the shell necklace, Triton got the trident fork. Ursula terrorized her half of the kingdom, eating innocent creatures left and right. So her good brother overthrew and banished her to the outskirts of the kingdom to liberate her subjects. That is why she hates him so much. What I always wondered is, if Ursula is Triton's sister, why does she have tentacles and he has fins? Did Ariel's grandmother have an affair with an octopus or something? Whatever, I guess it's just because Ursula is evil. But she did have one of the best villain songs that Disney ever wrote. I can't wait to see Melissa McCarthy portray her in the new movie!

You want a juicy back story. It’s said Ursula is Tritons sister, they had several other brothers and sisters who she slowly murdered in order to become Queen but Triton was the one sibling she couldn’t fully defeat. So yeah, to think she did all those horrible things not to just to her own family, but her brothers daughter who is her own niece… scary woman.

Well, there is 7 daughters and 7 seas, i theorized that when Triton dies, there had one sea for each one Apparently, it was planned that Ursula was Triton's sister, maybe she was the original heir but she was deposed and banished for something she did and the position was given to Triton instead, and the idea of reclaiming the trident is something she wanted because she still thinks it's hers by right I think there is a series of Disney books that tells the past of the villains and their motivations for what they do, I think that in Ursula's it told that she was Triton's sister, however this was already retconned

realistically Aerial wouldn't have any claim to the throne since she doesn't have any blood of the family she's marrying into, similar to Prince Phillip duke of Edinburgh, who despite being a prince could not have a claim on the British throne since he wasn't British himself and was a King Consort, with no powers. Aerial could however act as regent if Eric dies without an heir, or if said heir is too young to rule, although she'll lose her powers when their heir becomes of age to take the throne or another person is crowned, usually an Uncle, Cousin etc

“Did Ursula have an affair with Daddy Triton? Huh? Be honest with me.” 😅😂😂 With the diversity of his daughters, I think it’s safe to assume Daddy Triton gets around. 👀 And Ursula does fondle the tip of his trident later in the movie, so I agree you’re probably onto something.. 🤔😅

There was two direct to DVD follow-ups the one was called Little mermaid 2 return to the Sea and that's when Eric and Ariel have their daughter Melody and there's also a prequel that came out after that that was set when Ariel had her mother still she was killed by a crashing pirate ship hence Triton hates people and music at that point

Disney cut out the backstory that Ursula is Triton's sister, and that the ocean was divided between them, but Ursula wanted it all. And so, she was banished from the palace. They put this backstory in the Broadway version, but yeah, it would've been nice to have that in the movie.

My guess is that Flounder asked a bunch of friends to help get the statue into Ariel's grotto. Don't know how fish and aquatic creatures could lift a several hundred pound marble statue but hey, it's a Disney movie.

Ursula is a Cecaelia, which are half-human, half-octopus. In the film, she was once a resident in the palace, possibly a royal magician of sorts until King Triton caught her using black magic and banished her. However, in the current license version of the stage musical and based on the deleted storyline for her, Ursula is the youngest of seven daughters. Her father was the sea god Poseidon, and she was always envious as he doted on the other daughters but not her. To ease his guilt being an awful father to her, he gifted her a magic nautical shell. Ursula started using black magic with it to kill off her sisters to become the favorite. However when that failed, she committed patricide, the act of killing ones’ own father; she then became the ruler of the entire ocean. However she had a younger sibling, King Triton. When he came of age he took back rule of the seas, the crown, and the trident. Then he banished her, and she swore revenge. It’s revealed the final confrontation that Ursula was responsible for the death of Ariel‘s mother. King Triton never knew because he assumes that humans are killed her because she went for a swim one day and never came back. Ariel to defeated her aunt by smashing her shell which acted as a life force to her. 🖤💜🐙🐚

I definitely didn’t appreciate this film when as I was younger as much as I do now. Amazing animation and got the studio out of a 20 year slump. Also check out Beauty and the Beast if you haven’t yet since that’s another of the big 4, the other 2 being Aladdin and Lion King.

Something I love that you mentioned is that Ursula LITERALLY laid all the cards on the table. She basically told her, heres the deal/bet if you can get the Prince to fall in love with you and kiss you in 3 days, you get to be human permanently. Don't and you belong to me and in order to make all this happen your gonna pay with your voice. She didn't even have to lie to get her to sign the contract, she even showed what happens to those that can't pay or uphold the contract. All Ursula had to do was wait until Ariel was at her most vulnerable and desperate. Ariel could have swam out of there at anytime to get away. But Ursula made a bet on what she thought was impossible, true loves kiss in three days time, something fairy tales speak of. Thats why I think Ursula is a master class villain, she will tell you how screwed your gonna get in the deal and still get you to sign it anyway.

Deleted scenes show that there was a plan for Ursula to have been Triton's sister who was cast out of the palace for witchcraft and conspiracy against her brother. As it is, I think she is meant to pass as an ex advisor, in Sebastian's place.

Okay. So the ending in the original I don't think is totally bad, Though I think I might be thinking of one of the later rewrites by a different author. But she was given a chance to basically kill either the prince or the prince's fiance(Fuzzy memory)to save her self, But she refused and chose to be turned into a blood sea foam. But because of that choice, She became a part of the wind. Like an Angel or something. Again. Might be thinking of one of the rewrites.

Not a long on Ursula but from what I have heard from other videos and backstory apparently there a Disney book that claims that she is Airel's aunt also Airel's dad's half-sister. I don't know all the details but from what it sounded like she was kicked out for her dark magic gifts and she wanted to do unspeakable things. That's at least what I heard and found.
