I went inside Amazon's Grocery Store: Smart Carts & No Cashiers!

Amazon has already opened a dozen of these stores the past year in California and Illinois. Whatever you put in the cart, it automatically detects -- so by the time you're finished, there is no more checkout process. But it also feels like a distribution center. Will this be the future of shopping?

I know a lot of people LOVE going to the grocery store just to look at the fresh produce. Maybe this is a more 'old-style' attitude to shopping, but I still like looking at the quality of the meats I buy, inspecting the broccoli for any yellowing, picking exactly the right sized bunch of bananas. But for laundry detergent, cereal, packaged goods, I can easily order those online. So Wholefoods and the like which focus on fresh food can implement this system but maybe with a scanning QR code instead of keying in a ZIP code to make it less cumbersome and I think its quite attractive that you don't need to wait and line up to check out.

Excellent review and I am surprised it was not a perfect experience. I think grocery stores are here to stay for quite some time because it takes less time. For example, it usually takes less than 30 mins to select and vet around a hundred items by hand, but same items would take hours to vet and order online. Not to mention the shipping time. Online has an edge if one is buying the same exact things over and over again, but I do not know anybody who buys the exact same groceries with exact same amounts every time. We are still not full robotic, yet.

It all depends on your house location and age group (in terms of grocery shopping). I go both ways but sometimes it's really nice to see how the supermarket looks especially during holiday season

The only issue I would think is losing the cart after you go outside with it. Also how weather resistant are the carts.

I love this idea. Yea it's a bit slow but I'd go for it especially when I have my standard re-up grocery shopping and I'm not getting anything new. I like the flexibility. Wish they had these in Ontario, Canada where I live. 😁 Great video thx for sharing!

Both have advantages so I don't think either will be replaced unless there are external factors such as lockdowns causing grocery stores to have limited capacity or operating hours. Because with online grocery there are inconveniences as well such as needing someone to collect the delivered items, or some other practices. For example I do online shopping but I do not do online grocery shopping because being able to see shelves of choices of similar products is more satisfying and better for making choices. But for people who have limitations, such as difficulty walking or difficulty carrying heavy groceries, it might be much better for them to use online grocery shopping instead.

Ordering groceries online is a great concept. But, I really prefer to choose my own groceries. For example, someone who is filling your order may not take the time to make sure your cans are not bent, your bread is fresh, or, your produce doesn't have any bad spots on it. They also may not take time to make sure you are getting products that have the longest shelf life left on them. The workers are busy, so, that's all understandable. However, I've seen workers placing cold items in orders, then, they go about filling other orders on their big carts. Meanwhile, those cold items are getting warm or hot. So, I really prefer to do my own grocery shopping. I also prefer to choose the meats I may order. The smart cart would be a plus once you get used to how the system operates, though. 😉

The one major advantage I see to this, is that there are no long check out sections! Although, the cumbersome ness of entering product codes will have to be improved over time!
@stefan6412

You can´t. Because things like apples you have to weigh. That is the Achilles Heel of this method the scanning and putting in numbers for your items. The little time you save at the cashiers is not enough to compensate for that. For example i buy a lot of pasta (5-6 different sorts) which i usually put in the cart in less than 10 seconds. With this method i have to scan 10-12 packs of pasta so the app knows which sort i bought. That would take at least 1 minute. And then the nightmare of putting in numbers for all my fresh vegetables and fruit and weighing it. No thanks i stay with the traditional way of shopping.

Looks like this is more work than normal. Yeah you safe the time at the cash register but all the wasted time to scan everything you put in your cart. I usually don´t need more than 15 minutes to buy my groceries including the cash register time. This looks like it would take 30 minutes because of the scanning.

The Dutch have already been doing this for years. With a few differences though. Most stores have got handheld scanners at the front that you can take with you whilst grocery shopping, but with regular carts. At the end of the store you’ve got sort of a terminal where you check out using said scanner. Payment is manual though (Entering your debit card code etc). There are random checks so that customers don’t start stealing en masse. So the checkout isn’t completely automatic.

Yes, smart carts are good for whomever would rather not interact with anyone at a checkout lane or for the last customers to finish shopping in congested stores, but why run a cashierless store if that means something replaces cashiers? If every physical store no longer had employment of any type, how would we get the money we’d need in order to buy whatever we can’t live without?!
