I Went Into The WORST Parts of Fresno, California. This Is What I Saw.

What happened to this place? Can it be fixed?
Ask someone in Fresno where the bad part of town is, and they’ll probably tell you the east side of town, or more likely the city’s west side. West Fresno is far more rundown and dangerous than most other parts of town. And that’s saying a lot, cause Fresno is a very dangerous and drug riddled city overall.
My goal was to find the worst part of Fresno, a very complicated place in California's central valley. So I drove around on a day in late October of 2021 - asking people where to go and seeing what parts of town looked the worst.
Several people I talked to told me the worst part of Fresno is the city’s southwest side right off of MLK, so I went there. Here’s what it looks like there. This part of town has a lot of gang activity and shootings every night. Honestly, it’s bad, but not BAD bad. At least visually. And I have a duty to my KZfaq audience to show as honest a look at a city that I can. So I wasn’t settling for just kinda bad. Plus, you guys see gang infested ghettos all the time on this channel.
Now, if you looked hard enough in the greater Fresno area, you’d find just about anything. There’s a bunch of homeless people. There are nice fancy neighborhoods. Downtown is rundown, but there are some nice pockets around. Fresno has large areas with college kids and sort of a cultural diversity to it. Fresno has lots of ghettos and farms and…ghetto farms. Aha.
By the end of the day, I had found what I was looking for. Off to the far west end of town off of a road called Brawley Avenue, I discovered a community in disrepair. It’s where the farms meet the drug abusers. We’re here because this is what a poor neglected community looks like in california’s central valley. And there are many many more just like it.
Fresno is a very poor and dangerous place. If you look at the latest charts on cities with the highest poverty rates, you’ll find cities you’re familiar with - places like Detroit and Cleveland and Buffalo. But right there at number 8, even ahead of Memphis, is Fresno, population 550,000. It’s California’s 5th largest city, and a place with a complicated past. On one hand, it’s very poor and dangerous - some have called Fresno one of the most dangerous cities in the country -a place where there’s shootings and stabbings, car thefts and meth abuse. But on the other hand, it’s a very affordable place to live and one that’s been ruled by conservative politics for a long time. In fact, in my opinion, Fresno is pretty much the last affordable somewhat conservative place you can live in California anymore.
Because of its relative affordability, Fresno is growing fast. You have all these people leaving the Bay Area and southern california, looking for homes they can actually buy. But it’s not a very BOOMING place by any stretch. There aren’t a lot of good jobs here, and Fresno’s downtown certainly needs a big makeover and some attention, something I showed in another video I did.
In addition to the high crime and large homeless population, meth has really taken hold in Fresno. In areas like this, meth has become a tragic part of life, and it’s not showing signs of letting up. CNN once called Fresno the meth capital of the nation once. In case you didn’t know, the Central Valley of California is where meth labs first became a thing in the mid 1980s. While Columbia became known as the hub of the cocaine industry, pockets of the central valley like where we are right now were our version of that, but for meth production and distribution.
Clearly this part of Fresno is very poor and somewhat isolated from the rest of the community. Visually, it’s a very interesting place. It reminds me of parts of Mexico, and I’m not the only person to say that.

It's so crazy to see one of my favorite KZfaqrs driving around my neighborhood. I have lived in West Fresno almost all my life, and I am not a "HoodBilly". The area is slowly getting bad in terms of crime and poverty but it's not NEARLY as bad as places like Stockton, the Bay Area or LA. I just graduated college with a bachelor's in economics and started working for the local economic development agency here. I'm proud to call West Fresno my home and am committed to making it a better place to live.

Something that I noticed too and been told by the locals who grew up here is that some parts of the west side have calmed down due to people (primarily Mexicans) who moved to Fresno from other major cities and moved to the west part of Fresno for the cheap rents. Most of these Mexican communities are taking over the west side and these families are regular families who are working families just trying to make ends meet. I only lived in Fresno for one year and something I realized is that some of these people who lived in Fresno their whole life still don’t know a lot about their city. I was never a sheltered kid so when I moved to Fresno I took the time to ventured out and seen the good the bad and the ugly. A lot of my co workers are born and raised in Fresno and Clovis and I know more about their city then them themselves that people often are surprised when I tell them that I’m not from here. A lot of people I met live in nice areas of Fresno and Clovis and they stay in their area they are scared to venture out. I know she ventured out but not enough to know.

@@gailc2343 I’m not saying everything she said is wrong but he should have picked someone else. Like how do you not know if Fresno has grown or not. Look around construction hasn’t stopped last. Last year this time it was hard to get an apartment because a huge wave of people from SoCal and the Bay Area flocked here during the pandemic. Actually most Mexican Americans tend to be more liberal and vote democrat. I was conservative maybe till I was 25 years of age. Now that I’m 30 I am more liberal. As a liberal we also care about family unity too. Yes it’s disgusting that a lot of immigrants and children were not only deported but put in cages and treated inhumane under Obama but what did Donald Trump do when he was in office? Did he let these children go home to Mexico no he did not he kept them in those cages. Instead He put a Muslim ban the second he took office and threatened to revoke the U.S Citizenship of all u.s born children who were born to parents with illegal status. Where was this family unity values that you conservatives say you have? This fight isn’t about conservatives and liberals this is about the 1% making sure that they keep getting richer and richer while the rest of us 99% get poorer and poorer. The 1% don’t care if we are conservative or liberal. Also Obama did at least something to help. He started the DACA program which gave children with clean records who came here young illegally with their parents work permits and made attending college possible. Trump tried taking that away. In California people are able to get a drivers license regardless of immigration status. A lot of insurances took advantage. If a car hit you and you were uninsured their insurance refused to pay because you were unlicensed and on check points your car would be impounded if you are unlicensed they don’t care if your coming from work and your ineligible for a license. So Obama did at least did a little to help

The entire Central Valley has a very Grapes of Wrath feel to it. The majority of Fresno is bad unless you can live north of Shaw Ave, and even those residents are often the victims of crimes through burglary and car theft. It seems like the odds are always against you in Fresno no matter how hard to work to get ahead. The only way to move forward in Fresno is to save your money, to get a home or something else. I moved to Fresno 4 years ago from Orange County. My neighborhood is nice and lush with greenery. There's a fraction of the traffic and everyone seems to be like 40% more relaxed here. She's 26 & only lived in Fresno for 22 yrs! I've lived in Fresno for 40 years! Yes, every city has it's ghetto, drugged up parts & compared to L.A, S.F & the bigger cities in CA, the homeless in Fresno is not as bad, but like every body said, it's a problem in CA. Fresno has a rich cultural diversity & downtown has a lot of historical buildings with an art scene. Fresno is the agricultural city of the state. I worked in the field as well. Weather is not as bad. I rather have humid dry weather during the summer than humid with a lot moisture in the air. Fresno is in the middle surrounded by mountains & beaches a few hours away. I lived & grew up in every part of Fresno for 40 years. She may have some good points but This is not a true representation of Fresno.

Hi Nick, I live in Los Angeles. I have lived here for 53 years. There were always homeless in Skid Row. While the homeless were numerous in Skid Row, they didn't have these massive encampments. I would be interested in when and how these encampments spread across the city, across the state, and now in many states. There were anti camping laws in every city. It seems like they were enforced until they weren't. It didn't start with COVID. I recall a city sweep in 1984 for the Los Angeles Olympics. Some say, in California, it started in 1970 when the LPS laws were put in place making it difficult in involuntarily hospitalize someone psychiatrically. As a result, most of the state psychiatric facilities closed.

The lots on most of the homes are like 1/2 acre or more now we build 3-5 homes on the same amount of land. If you take Fresno out of the state numbers it would be in line with Appalachia. The place to move is Clovis or north of Shaw Ave. You drove past my cousins shop and turned before reaching the home my grandmother lived in for 40+ Year’s. The main reason why Fresno and so many other cities in California now face so many problems is the false of state government as stricter rules and regulations are not enforced. This is why high on crime as well as many people are barely able to survive because things are so expensive, such as housing. Imagine in San Francisco Bay Area. Imagine back in 1959, a brand new house, 2b, 2ba, 2 car garage, was selling for mere $19,000. Now that same house is 1.2 million dollars and this is not the high side, some will run over 5 millions and up. So if anyone wishing to purchase a house now these days, lender will require to put down approx. 20% down, that will be whopping 240,000 down, in many states, this down payment will pay off for the entire house, very few well to do can come up with such down payment. This is why there are so many homeless people in bay area also. Gasoline is close to $7.00 a gallon now in major cities in Calif. Food price has shot up also due to high inflation. Yes, sir, Californians are suffering left and right these days due to lack of government oversee. California is no longer what's used to be as "golden state" anymore.

grew up in the central valley in merced county in the 70s/80s and went to fresno state. left the area 1992, i never went back. fresno/central valley is the agricultural hub for the united states - migrant farm workers would be coming and going year long following the crops. the video looks pretty much the same as i recall back in my college days. back then, west fresno (my uncle lived there around modoc st) was run by african american gangs and east fresno was run by hispanic/mexican gangs (the notorious bulldog gang hijacked fresno state's colors and mascot to the point even in the 90s the college recommended hispanic students not wear fresno state attire as they would be mistaken as a gang member). fresno focused on the north side and to the border of clovis for development (basically close to fresno state) and that's were anyone with any money moved to back in the early 90s. looking at the fresno vids, seems like those areas are still the desirable part of fresno. downtown was always a pit. the motels off highway 99 have been a haven for prostitution even during my time there. the tower district had a little area with a brewery that was nice, but that was just a few blocks. other than that, nothing much to do in the 'no. a night out would be going to one of the restaurants down the street from fresno st that cleared out tables and the restaurant turned into a psudo-night club or a fraternity/house party. not many options... at least in my days there. oh, but one really cool thing this is long gone is the orange juice stands that used to be off highway 99.

I lived in Sanger for 10 years ... not in Fresno but within driving distance. I watched the homeless situation get worse with each passing year. By the time I moved away in 2016, there was homeless at every traffic light on Blackstone ... homeless would confront you at many gas stations ... and the train station was swarming with them. It wasn't all bad though: I would go to Grizzlies ballgames, dinner theater in the Tower district, meet with friends in some nice restaurants in nearby Clovis. But the homeless really overshadows all of that. Then factor in the crime, the heat, the smog, the smoke from wildfires, the taxes, the gas prices, the overall high cost of living, the poverty ... Fresno along with the entire Central Valley is not a great place to live.

Fresno has a lot of jobs. David sunflower seeds sunrise medical, the railroad, foster farms, trucking companies, there are tons of jobs, but they are concentrated on the east side. The problem with Fresno is the gang violence, homeless population, crime crime crime….there are older neighborhoods fig garden, tarpy, Mayfair. Biggest thing with Fresno is Ashland north is generally good. Everything south of that gets more and more run down. The more liberal politicians take over the worse it is. Kids in ghettos learn from criminals. Dad and mom seem to be a failure in those cases.

Growing up In San Jose all I would hear is Fresno is dangerous don’t move there and Fresno is hot don’t move there. Both are true but now that I been living in Fresno I can attest that outsiders and the news make it sound more worse than what it is. It is hot but I don’t notice it as much because I have good AC which wasn’t something I had in the Bay Area and you get used to it. Also as long as you stick to yourself and don’t get involved in drugs and gangs you’ll be fine. Most people who get shot are people running the streets and the homeless shooting each other unfortunately. Like any place pick a neighborhood you feel safe in

You know what the president of Salvador did? He rounded up the gang criminals and put them all together with their rivals. Imagine the Us government did the same with norenos sorenos and all that non sense gangs around and put them all in the same box. Then you wouldn’t have cities to compare to others all would be pleasant. No more graffiti walls with gang threats no more druggies or rap ghetto music bumping from bucket cars passing by.

Grew up there. West side has always had slower growth as it's considered prime ag land with growth directed "north" towards the foothills. The city itself is "lopsided". Downtown on one end and everything else is north ... too bad downtown isn't located around the Blackstone/Shaw area which is the real "city center". Good things are: probably the best road system in the state and one of the best in the country. Wide roads ... well maintained ... good freeway system. On the flip side of that ... everyone drives 50-60 MPH on surface streets because the roads are so good. Everything is so "fast paced". When you hear the word Fresno ... think "fast". Excellent food scene which is what I miss most ... it's a "foodie town" ... right up there with San Francisco & New Orleans ... but you don't hear much about that. Most of the city is nicely landscaped ... curbs, gutters, median islands and it's clean in most areas. Bad things are: crime rate is high ... schools are "wild". Lot of gang activity and "wannabes". That 3-4 month summer stretch is always hard ... it's just so hot. Air is "gunky". It looks clean when you're in the city and you look "up"... but when you get on the outskirts and look at the horizon you realize just "how bad the air really is".

Winters in Fresno are perfect. Plants still grow outside so Idk why you think it's super cold. There really isn't that much crime or murders or anything like that. It's all a matter of perspective. What do you expect from a farming town? Crops have to be grown and this area is perfect for growing because everything grows here. It's just really hot. We don't need more 700k houses built in the north side of town for bay area people to relocate to. We need more affordable low end houses built that people can actually afford for being a farming community.

Do a video on Tracy, CA. It’s the first city over the Altamont from the Bay Area. Use to be a quiet farming town that historically was centered around the railroad. 30K people in mid 90’s when we moved here from San Bruno. Now it’s 100K. Housing market is ridiculous. It’s nice, no real ghettos but alotta homeless especially at El Pescadero Park (it’s own city). Local politics are ah mess.

That has Roseville California was. My parents bought back in the late 80s for less than $90,000. It was a small railroad town and there was maybe 40,000 people. Now there's 150,000 and it's an upper middle class city with shopping and destinations galore.
