I have long nails though and cats really seem to like that & cats melt when your scratch the base of their tale when they trust you. On petting techniques: if you're unsure, you can observe how the cat licks/cleans themselves. Try to copy their rhythm and how much pressure they use.

Connor should make his way to Cat island with a pocket full of treats. I am sure he could make some friends there.

I find getting down on one knee and offering my hand out in front of me right at their nose level to be the best way. Most cats are curious and will close the distance for a sniff. I wait for that interaction to end and if they stay in place I'll try for a gentle scratch at the base of the ear or along the cheek. I use careful slow movements so they aren't startled and can easily move away if they want. Also don't follow right away if they leave, try again a bit later. Following them when they are trying to get away just makes them mad.

I think part of it might also be that Connor is white, which is unfamiliar to them. I've seen dogs react negatively to people from other races because they didn't have any exposure to them growing up. Basically just looks like something alien to them.

Yeah omg and when he went in to pet the white cat on the belly first I feared for his life! Smell first with the back of the hand, then they'll guide you with their nose and head where they want to be pet. Then pet the head/ears/chin and maybe upper back. Most cats I meet love being rubbed under the chin and scratched behind the ears. Never go for the butt or belly unless you want to be scratched/bitten as it's a sensitive area. He was lucky the white cat decided to leave instead of attacking. Many cats would swat with a closed paw or gently place their mouth over your hand in warning, and if you kept doing it they'd attack.

Very good advice David. It has to be their idea. Or at least you need to make them think it is. The number one personality trait of a cat is they are contrary.

In cat body language, a human who is scared of cats and/or trying to pretend they don't exist is being polite in cat body language. Someone who is hunching their shoulders to appear smaller (not a threat), crossing their legs (can't run after you), avoiding eye contact (not challenging you), keeping their hands close to their body (not lunging at you or swiping human-paws to start a fight with you), and who will freeze when sniffed (introduction) is much more approachable then a giant who is sitting tall (fluffed fur), with their legs spread (easy to lunge and more fluffed fur), making eye contact (challenging, almost like saying insults), with wide or grabbing hands (cats swat one another to start fights and in fights), and who takes any approach as permission to pet (without so much as a Hello sniff to see if they smell weird. Rude.). Unlike humans and dogs, cats are firmly in the MIDDLE of the food chain, and they know it. Giants that act aggressive in cat body language are best to be avoided so they don't become predators. The cats in the video look like they were trying very hard to be polite in telling Connor he was the equivalent of the creepy guy talking about getting married and having kids halfway through the first date.

Things I learned by having cats all my life: - Cats like to be pet in different parts, if the cat you are dealing with is a friendly one, they tend to lead the way where they want to be pet /you can also infer it from their face) - If the cat is not as friendly just sit down near it, don't do anything, if they want love, they will let you know - Playing with cats it's tricky, some like to fight hard, some like to go and fetch things, some like normal toys, some just like lay down, observe a cat 10-20 mins, you can learn a lot from it (except when they are sleeping) - Never, I say, Never, wake up a cat, some of them get really mad - Slowly blinking to them calm down the cats if they are young and even some older cats, just don't over do it, since that could be seen as picking a fight with them
