I think connor would have needed to play the "british prince charming" type of guy. So not just shake hands but like hold it as if you would kiss it (though not actually kiss it). and then talk about how much he misses english pastry or something and ask them if they know european pastry (Yes i am aware there is no european pastry, but its all about becoming a sterotype here)

When I lived in Takaoka, Toyama, there was a fantastic British pub called The White Hart. Sadly it closed back in 2015 but the food was actually pretty good.

So to make it simple it was an authentic experience
