I went to a Delta IV Heavy Launch!

Took a break from Dissertation-y things today to visit Vandenberg and watch a Delta IV Heavy take off! The Delta IV Heavy is an enormously powerful rocket and it's pretty awesome to watch one in person. I took my new tripod rig and got some great footage despite the awful ground-level wind.

Awesome! Always wanted to get out to see a launch, and those Delta Heavy's are something else. I didn't realize you could see stage separation, very cool!

“See” is a bit generous xD you can hear people driving away. I should look up how far downrange it was when the three bright specs diverged... many many miles... seeing all that clearly is the advantage of nighttime (or better, dusk/dawn) launches!

That's a big rocket. In high school many, m-a-n-y years ago, our Jr. ROTC class took a field trip to Vand enburg AFB on the central coast of California. While we were there, we watched a Minuteman II lift-off. Definitely LOUD with super, duper sub-bass. It shook my tummy good!

I’ve been around Top Fuel engines many times. A rocket launch has to be even more jarring than that. Seeing one is on my bucket list.

I worked this launch as an engineer on the gsw avionics team 🙂. It was amazing how we were able to get it off first try, shocked everyone.

If they actually do that Firefly test launch in a few days (before I move) I’ll be there! I don’t have great hopes though because there wasn’t a time set as of a few days ago.

I went to see delta 4 heavy launch in Florida in Dec 2020 i think it was, feeling rumbling and seeing it light up night sky. Amazing!! 👏👏

@@AlphaPhoenixChannel Yes, that's the one I'm talking about! We're missing the milestones for 2^13, 2^14, and 2^15. I must say, I love this method of doing subscriber milestones so much more than the "normal" base 10 orders of magnitude milestones everyone else does.

Where did you watch the launch from if I may ask? I watched from Miguelito Park which was ~9 mi away (which was absolutely awesome), but I'm wondering if this spot was closer.

The sonic boom only happens when a vehicle travels at Mach 1. It’s so loud when the falcon boosters return but that’s actually them passing through Mach 1 while slowing down. A so civ boom is basically the maximum Doppler up-shift of a signal - the frequency of the wave goes to “infinity” and you get a massive spike of pressure. If you want to see it more clearly I’m sure the Wikipedia article for Doppler effect or sonic boom has the classic animation with circular sound waves emitted from a moving object traveling at different speeds

It doesn't have to be at a right angle to the direction of movement as it is at mach 1. My understanding is that the unbounded build-up you speak of would only happen at one point anyway, not along the entirety of the shock front.

Refer to the diagram of circles of sound as an object moves. The boom is not from the waves overlapping while traveling at speed of sound, but from the shockwave traveling over you.
