When my daughter was little she started to wake up at the same time every night. It would drive me bananas as I had a new baby too. I tried a trick that stopped it. I set the alarm 15 mins to when she would normally wake up. I would go in and disturb her she would open her eyes roll over and go back to sleep. I did this for a week and it all stopped. No issue after that. The trick is stopping the cycle that the brain has gotten into. You could set your alarm to 20 mins beforehand and then turn it off roll over and go back to sleep. It does work 😁

Right, I just gave a long step by step set of instructions on how to cure insomnia (for most people), but I could have just said, "go camping." Of course, camping isn't a true cure unless you do it for a couple months in order for the circadian rhythm to develop, and that isn't practical for most people.

What about anxiety meds or melatonin?
@KitZunekaze
@KitZunekaze 4 жыл бұрын
@@carochan86 Melatonin can be dangerous if you have a form of actual insomnia, as it can lead to needing ever-increasing strengths of medications as your body grows resistant. I was told by my doctors to avoid such treatments and focus more on behavioral ones. Melatonin is relatively safe for health people to take to promote sleep. But in Insomniacs and those with chronic sleeping issues it can cause dependency, and addiction. And Anxiety medication may work, but that really depends on if the actual root cause is the anxiety. It's possible to have anxiety and insomnia and for the anxiety to not be the trigger for the insomnia. Just wanted to clarify, as someone who has suffered insomnia for the greater part of my life. In the end, see a doctor. Don't just try every treatment some guy on a youtube comment string yells out.

@KitZunekaze
@KitZunekaze 4 жыл бұрын
@@StacyForest738 No Melatonin. I do know both what it is, and what it does. And I was recommended specifically by my doctor to avoid it as it can be resisted by the body, which can cause a dependency if you rely on taking extra external melatonin to sleep. It's not a great option for people with insomnia, and should be taken at the advice of a doctor. It's not a good thing to suggest to people randomly without understanding their history, is all. It can cause dependancies. Behavioral treatments are usually the best for people suffering full blown insomnia.

I have this very good technic for getting sleep at the middle of the night when stressing about different stuff. Imagine you are in a small, messy 1920s detective's archive room. Then imagine you are now going to tidy up this messy mess. Get working, imagine yourself standing in the room picking up the different document of what you have on your mind. Put imaginary documents of your thoughts in imaginary folders, and put the folder in the archives around the office you imagine. When you have organized all the thoughts simply say to yourself, "oh this was a productive day", snap your fingers in your head and get instantly transported to nice chair on a beach. Start focusing on how nice it is sitting on the chair at the beach. If your start thinking about stuff again, simply shout to yourself, "beach!" to remind you that all the work of organizing has already been done, and it now is time to take some vacation. I find it fun to really get in to the spirit of it, and try to be really elaborate when describing the places i am at.

AH-HEM- (random person on the internet giving advice to another random person on the internet) - Exercise a little right before bed. My main 2 are push ups and pull ups because they make me tired fast without getting too sweaty (also quiet). The main goal is to get your motor neurons tired/used up, not get sweaty or pumped up. This is really helpful for people like us (desk job) that don't get physically tired from our jobs. You can even do this when you wake up in the middle of the night, just do push ups until failure, lay on the ground, do more, lay, do more, then crawl to bed and pass out. Brain can't think because so tired from the push ups. Body so tired from push ups. Shut down achieved. This has been my thing ever since I started having a zero period in high school and AP classes had me up late doing homework, I needed something to "turn my brain off" after studying late at night. Again I'm not a medical professional, see statement at top of comment. Side benefit you get some exercise. Good luck on your sleep journey, whatever you decide to try next (don't give up, sleep is important =D)

At a self-management group for CFS/ME we were taught that it is the time when you wake up, which is more important than the time you go to bed. Your body gets used to getting up at the same time, after a while this has an effect on your sleep pattern.

When I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, I started sleeping with a CPAP machine. I remember learning that the brain required time to recover from long term sleep loss, almost like recovering from an injury, usually requiring 2 - 6 weeks. Once on the CPAP, I started sleeping much better. After 4 weeks, I truly woke up, and really became aware of the world around me. (A common result is that patients become really angry about the way they'd been treated before CPAP therapy - it happened to me. But I digress.) The point is, it really takes more than 1 week to adapt to a new sleep pattern. It's a reasonable start, but to really change your habits, it's going to take 2-3 weeks of consistently going to bed at the same time every night. You referenced a fixed time period for sleeping, and whatever sleep you got during that time was what you got that day. "Restricted sleep"? When you wake up in the middle of the night and can't fall back asleep quickly they say you're supposed to get out of bed. Reason being you want your mind to associate being in bed with being asleep not with being awake in the middle of night. if you feel like you're really awake and are tossing and turning and can't go back to sleep, leave the room, read a book, do something relaxing, and then you'll eventually get tired (hopefully) and go back to bed to sleep.

When I was a kid and couldn't sleep, my mom had me move to the couch with a blanket and pillow. It worked every time. As an adult, I've found it effective as well. I go to the couch rather than toss and turn and wake up my wife, and go lie down on the couch. I always fall asleep immediately and only wake when the sun comes up and I'm amazed to be in the living room and it's morning. I never knew why it worked, but that's probably it: When you can't sleep, you're associating the problem with being in bed. That incongruence is what bothers you: "Why can't I sleep??? After all, I'M IN BED!" But if you're on the couch, you're like, "I don't HAVE to sleep if I don't want. I can just hang out he.... SNORE."

It works for me. Get up, go to the TV room, get on a recliner or couch. Put something on TV that you are just barely interested in. You will inadvertently fall asleep. When you wake up briefly, shut off TV, roll out of the chair and roll back into bed. No stops. I choose something from my KZfaq feed that fits the bill!

Things that have worked fairly well for me: 1. Going to bed/getting up at the same time everyday even on the weekend. 2. Stop looking at my phone 30min to an hour before bed. 3. Having a cup of hot something before bed. ie steamed milk and honey, chamomile, hot water with lemon etc. 4. Right before bed I turn out all the lights using only candle light to finish up changing/brushing teeth and put on soft piano music to get my mind ready for sleep.

Yes, hyperthyroidism can affect a LOT of things. Poor sleep, more anxiety, shaky hands, etc. There's literally like 20 possible symptoms, and it presents differently in different people, so it is under diagnosed. I wasn't diagnosed until college, and even then it was a fluke. My health class gave extra credit if we went to the campus doctor for a blood sugar test, and I figured I might as well see if I had low iron like my mom. I talked to the doctor about my symptoms and he said I've probably had hyperthyroidism my entire life. Got a blood test, and it was WAY past the normal range.

Meh if he's finishing them before noon, then not necessarily. I have my daily cup of coffee every morning (usually just the one), and I sleep like a champ. That's enough caffeine half-lives to get the caffeine levels low enough that they shouldn't really hurt. It was almost like being on a swing or night shift so I did all the things the standard day-sleeper does: black out shades, cool room, no screens for an hour before bed... I even used a diffuser for added white noise. I found the changed noises coming from outside my bedroom window was the biggest challenge that I didn't know how to combat. I just couldn't get used to it. I do still love my blackout shades though.
