I Went To The Most Liberal Place In West Virginia

You aren't gonna believe this part of West Virginia!
This is not your normal West Virginia. We’re in Morgantown, home to West Virginia University. It’s by far the most liberal place in this state. You could actually draw a circle for 500 miles and not find a higher concentration of Democrats.
People in Morgantown take pride in being ‘different’ then the rest of West Virginia. The liberals here’ll tell ya - we’re educated and a lot of us have good jobs. We have big world aspirations. We’re not dumb chew spitting inbred hicks.
I’m here because I wanted to see what it was like and talk to some of the people who live here in this mysterious, rare liberal land.
This was day 3 on my great Appalachian adventure, and the first stop in West Virginia - the only state that’s completely in the Appalachian region. We’re gonna spend the next four stops here in the mountain state. There’s plenty of time to see poverty and rundown and the effects of drugs. But we’re gonna begin in a different type of place. I think.

I was born and raised in the Appalachians. I'm now in Northern VA but have a lot of family in WV and have followed developments in WV. The issues impacting WV are many and complex. But here's a simple issue: people don't like condescension and one does not need a college education to recognize it. After watching this video, I can understand why the "drunk redneck" had his feathers ruffled in the beginning. He likely saw the condescension. Everyone has something of value to say - don't try to engage in conversation if you refuse to recognize that.

This was one of the most cherry picked videos about West Virginia and particularly Morgantown that I’ve ever seen. You left out that Morgantown is home to a Power 5 University, with research capabilities that are on par with the biggest higher education institutions in the world. You left out that Morgantown has one of the U.S. Government National Labs that is innovating every day to solve the world’s energy problems. You left out the beautiful neighborhoods of Suncrest, Cheat Lake, and the surrounding area that boast multi-million dollar homes and instead showed the run down parts that every city has, regardless of location. You tailored this video to what the vast majority of people’s preconceived notions of what West Virginia is like rather than showing what it truly is; a state with a wide diversity of view points, with people fiercely loyal to it and willing to help almost anyone, regardless of beliefs or differences. I implore you to revisit this and make a video that truly captures what the people stand for. It’s a true shame.

My family and I moved to the Bay Area a few years ago and I’m thinking of purchasing a single family home, but with real estate prices currently through the roof, is it still a good idea to buy a home or should I invest in stocks for now and just wait for a housing market correction? well you could put a downpayment on a home and as well diversify as much as you can into Ai and pharm. stocks like Pfizer and JnJ. Certain Ai companies are rumoured to be overvalued and might cause a market correction, I’d suggest you go with a managed portfolio, but even those don’t perform so well, so it’s best you reach out to a proper fiduciary to guide you, that’s what works for my spouse and I.

West Virginia has lots of charm and contrasts. One of the most beautiful states in america. I love that there's run down and abandoned places and that the cities didn't grow since the 1950s because that means they didn't tear town the old building and didn't replaced them. Be careful going around the Appalachians, Nick. This is the second time you have encountered aggressive behavior (in McCreary County, KY and now WV). There are a lot of good, God-fearing people living in that region but also some of the more hardcore, more intense people probably because they were hardened by poverty all their lives. When the government regulates their livelihoods to the point of extinction, it's easily understandable the bitterness and frustration they might feel when dealing with outsiders. When I was in the military, I had a few West Virginians in my platoon. They're some of the most humble, down to earth fellas I've ever associated with. Stay safe, bro and thank you for your videos.

As a student of journalism, myself, I consider the action of getting out into the world and showing viewers what it looks or feels like...and taking the time to seek out interviews with people in those places is definitely journalism. I went to college in Western Pennsylvania not far from West Virginia and drive through the state many times on my way to and from school. I took a trip down to the monogahaela national forrest for a weekend trip. On the trip I popped a tire. In the remote part of the state I was in, I did not have a spare and most shops close on Sunday not to mention Triple A would have been an hour or two away. A friendly local saw me struggling and gave me his spare tire. Later on the trip as I was leaving, my car began smoking. I pulled into a little roadside store and knowing i needed oil (2007 Camry). My card declined, I guess Wells Fargo thought I had no reason to be down there. I set the oil down at the counter and started walking out to my car. The woman who had been in line behind me stopped me at the door of the store and paid for my oil despite my objections. Do not trash these people. They are some of the kindest people I’ve met in America. I don’t think it mattered if the people that helped me were “progressive” or not. They were just good people.

Greetings from Brazil, man! I'm absolutely addicted to your channel. It is very good to see all of the nuances in american culture and politics while comparing to Brazil. I've once heard someone say the U.S. is going through a "Brazilification", specially in the most liberal areas, which I agree, since most liberal areas tend to have more lenient criminal laws (like not arresting people that steal goods up to a certain price tag, here in Brazil there isn't legislation about it, but the court system "legislates" on its own even though we come from a Civil Law [Roman tradition] background isntead of a Common Law [Anglo tradition] like you) but on that note, Brazil has been going through a Americanization process with more people fighting for individual freedoms, the right to bear arms, a more open economy, less state, etc. People here are getting more educated on libertarianism and confronting those ideas with the ideas imposed on us ever since our monarchy fell and the tide is turning. Whereas we used to have elections leaning almost 80% towards the left, the last 2 elections basically ended 51/49. Let's see what the future holds for us, brother. This october I'll go to Canada and I hope to travel to the U.S. someday, love your culture and history and I always wanted to get to know the real USA, as shown in your videos. Keep it up. Stay strong. Take care. And as brazilians always say on the internet: COME TO BRAZIL haha

You'll gain a lot of context and insight into the history of resources, industry, stratification of income and redlining in each neighborhood you're in. Anyways these interviews were pretty amazing and enlightening about what the culture thinks and how they perceive the outside world. Because "education" system is just a misleading name for in reality brainwashing centers, to destroy USA using that generation.

I mean a lot of them grew up in poverty, Giving them benefit of the doubt someone's view can be pretty hostile to a country or place that has just forgotten about them. Plus the fact rising prices and stagnate wages don't help encourage any patriotism.

The one thing I learned in this video that really stands out is that I didn't know they still made Yoohoo drinks! I don't think I've seen that stuff since the 90's.

Nick, be careful man. I thought that guitar was about to come down on your head, and pretty sure Mr. Drunky was thinking about doing it as well.

Well Morgantown sure seems different than the rest of the state. Most of the people I meet in WV are kind, caring, and would take the shirt off their own back to give to you. Same for eastern KY. But maybe I'm saying that just because of the circles I'm in. I say it doesn't really matter what part of the country you're in, you're going to run into some crazy people - and some very kind people.

From my little experience I had with WV, people are very kind and caring. My car was broken down in WV in a road trip last year. I went to different car parts stores looking for parts that I needed. Everyone I encountered is very nice and caring. They made sure I got everything I needed. Despite, I'm Asian and speak broken English, they are still very nice and kind to help me out.

@@engrishsheep That's wonderful! Yes, I had a similar experience here in KY about 5 min from WV. My truck fell off its ball joint here in the Kroger parking lot, and within 5 minutes or less, several men came out of nowhere, got on their backs and proceeded to give me several different opinions of what was wrong. Two women even came up to me and told me they would pray for me. There are so many good and kind people here. And of course, the people in my church are super friendly.

Nick this may just be a tech issue but I wanted to let you know. This is not the only video I've seen this so you may not be aware. I've gone to the about section describing your channel. There are sections where you address donations, music etc. When I hit the paragraphs nothing comes up. What I mean is that hitting these areas does not bring you to another site. I would actually have to cut and paste or just manually type in the info. I hope I'm explaining myself correctly. Marilyn from NYC
