Viki Diler talks about the causes of language shift in Judeo-Spanish of Istanbul
VLACH ID-number: ladi1251TRV0049a
Description:
In this interview fragment, Viki Diler speaks very honestly and candidly about the historical causes that led to a radical change in attitude towards the Judeo-Spanish language. Viki’s family belongs to a dwindling number of resilient families who continued to speak Judeo-Spanish at home despite the fear which sprang from the "Citizen Speak Turkish!" campaign initiated in the 1930s. Additionally, Viki lends us a perspective into the role Judeo-Spanish has played in forming her identity.

Es muy fascinante y bien interesante de escuchar este idioma tal parecido al castellano moderno, se usa expresiones que no usan en castellano moderno pero me comprendi casi todo lo que dicen. Aunque, todavia estoy aprendiendo castellano, al nivel intermedio. Ay, ¡qué me gusta aprender ladino también!

Her spanish dialect is so beautiful. Its so much softer then modern Spanish. It got a calm sound i like it.
@CS-wq1vu
@CS-wq1vu 2 ай бұрын
Her calmness is due to her being a Turkish speaker. Her intonation as well as her way of expressing herself is very Turkish and I could even add that she's very soft spoken as most Turkish women are. I'm Spanish and lived in Turkey, one of my cultural shocks while living there was that I was often understood as someone with way too much bravado or even masculine because of my voice, mannerisms and body language while talking. It took me some time to even understand that I shouldn't go around smiling to strangers when running errands, etc. There's also little stress in Turkish intonation, both in syllables and prosody. Add the vowel harmony from Turkish and all these factors add up to how she sounds. This is my observation.

@@CS-wq1vu thats a great observation. One thing about Ladino i also notice is that it is closer to italian and vulgar latin. Specifically how things are pronounced like "j"Turkish is a very gentile language. Growing up in MA we have huge neighborhoods with turks italians greeks and armenians. My experience with turks is that they are more quiet and soft spoken. They have huge heart for animals and will grow a garden almost any where. I really find them a serious kind and gentil people. It kindof reminds me of some of the native american languages i heard with how gentile it is yet with some stress. I would say the smiling thin works well where there is a strong Roman Influence. I think your bravado would do well in The USA. We have a huge italian portuguese french and hispanic influence over our culture.

No sé si en este canal hay sefardíes que quieran hablar su idioma conmigo por algún tipo de videollamada de vez en cuando, pero yo me ofrezco encantado para ello o para escribirnos. Cualquier cosa que pueda hacer para apoyar esta lengua para mí será un honor.

It's fascinating to listen to, because, while the basic structure is Spanish, the pronunciation and use of certain words here ("sentir" for "oir" and "caler" for "dever") are more like Catalan than Spanish. Also the verb "morar" used instead of "viver" is like Portuguese. I guess Ladino comes from a mixture of all the languages spoken in the Peninsula, not just Spanish...

@@williansouza4088 It would be interesting to know... Did old Spanish use those words? Plenty of Jews in the Iberian peninsula came from Catalonia, so why wouldn't Catalan have had an influence on what would be Ladino?

Not sure what your are trying to convey but as an Ashkenazi Jew, Yiddish has noting to do with turkish. Yiddish is based on Medieval High German just as Ladino is based Medieval Castilian. There is no turkish influence at all as far as I am aware, at least not in Yiddish. Yiddish only has some Slavic, Hebrew and Aramaic borrow words.
