Daisy Braverman, a native Ladino speaker whose chilhood was spent between Izmir and Istanbul, two of the last Ladino-speaking communities anywhere, tells the story of her life at her home on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Moving to the United States for higher education -- she holds a PhD and has research interests in linguistics, Turkish, and Ladino -- she became involved with the Sephardic community in New York and spurred a Ladino-language theater revival. She also shares memories of the Sephardic cooking and culture she knew growing up.

That's amazing...after 500 years they kept the Ladino language ALive; and she speaks it (her Judeo Spanish) beautifully and better than most of the so called ''Hispanic'' youngsters born in Miami. Wonderful!.

Es para mí; español; una enorme sorpresa descubrir como pervive aislado un idioma, 530 años después del triste desarraigo físico de tantos españoles, que sin embargo han preservado la lengua, e intuyo que; al menos parcialmente; el alma de España. No puedo evitar que la emoción alcance mis ojos.

I’m a Turkish American living in NYC as well. What an incredible woman 💓 I was able to follow most of her Ladino using my Spanish.

Muito compreensível para os ouvidos de um falante do português brasileiro pelo sotaque totalmente igual ao nosso, apesar de ser uma língua derivada do castelhano medieval. Muito diferente do sotaque espanhol sibilante e do português lisboeta. É um espanhol com sotaque brasileiro...

Yo soy de abuelos andaluces de Espana. Te digo, yo entendi como 99% lo que ella habla. Es muy interesante. En mis genes dicen que tenemos una mezcla de Moro y de Sefardi, Yo creo esto tambien, y vamos, por la mayoria de que ella contaba es muy comfortable para nosotros. Su gramatica de espanol esta muy bien. Un saludo desde California.

Correcto, la sangre Sefardí está completamente integrada en los españoles y sean de la península o de Hispanoamérica, todos posiblemente tenemos algo de sefardí.

I just guessing (also as a response to Safakis NYC), Sephardic Jews must have been more fortunate in Turkey, because of the county's neutrality during the second world. One of the biggest communities lived in my hometown Thessaloniki, Greece until the German nazis send the majority of them (around 45.000 people) to the concentration camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

la escritura del Ladino se llama "Solitreo" y es un tipo de alfabeto Hebreo. Las letra no se parecen en nada al alfabeto Latino o Romano.

I'm Brazilian and understood 100% of what she said. Ladino and Portuguese have the same intonation and accent. When I speak Spanish I speak like that!

Is this spelling of Ladino standard, if there is even a standard, or is it usually only written with Hebrew letters? I feel that all those y's instead of i's and k's instead of q's, as well as the lack of silent h's somehow are unnecessarily making it look more different from Spanish than it really is. In general, as someone who speaks Spanish and Portuguese, this is very easy to understand. It's closer to Castellano than most other languages spoken in Spain.

@@michaelpardo8403 The transcription doesn't follow (phonetically) what DB says either. She either says Shabád or Shabá but never Shavát, like in the subtitles; pishin, not peshin, dizimos, not dezimos; prezentasyón, not presentasyón, pyesa not pieza etc. etc.
