I think the Washington Post article that published the photo along with it a seeking to find clarity on Jones racial views highlights an important point. You can help individual black people and still hold anti-black/racist sentiments. Those are not mutually exclusive. Slaveowners back in the day rationalized slavery by viewing blacks as racially inferior while freeing their slaves. Segregationist rationalized and justified segregation as a means to keep the races separate but equal all the while terrorizing blacks and destroying black neighborhoods. I found it interesting that his head coach told him not to go to the school that day but he disobey and went anyway and I also find it telling that he def was aware that racial segregation existed and he did have could not muster the courage to speak out or stop the injustice as he sought to do looking back.
