During a crisis, is it better to write dystopian fiction that explores a potential threat, or is it best to write escapism that helps us forget our troubles? In this video, I explore the question and see if there's an answer.
Apologies for how tired I look in this one.

I pitched a plot during lockdown it's kind of like the handmaid's tale set in a dystopic society where your name is a number you don't have a name that dosent exist so it's just a number I've gone back and forth with it but I still want to do it I'm enjoying your video it's Really helpful 😊🤗. It's the story of this human who is actually a wolf she was born a wolf but takes a human form to blend in with society and her family / pack are wolves so I'm thinking of maybe touching on issues such as bigotry and discrimination , oppression told through the eyes of a wolf.

"If I were an agent..." I totally agree! Grit. Real s***. I wish it were that way too. I think there's a huge market for it. I've read so many books that are so similar that it's disappointing. They don't want to touch something that almost needs to exist. Escapism can be built into documented reality. IMO. Great video as always! Thanks!

Absolutely! That's what I love about literature - its ability to lean into those hard-hitting subjects. To explore a tough issue, dissect it, and see if we can learn more about it. I wish agents and publishers would take more risks, but I guess it's costly if they get it wrong! Thanks Rita, always a pleasure to hear from you :)

Some of the best historical art is based around confronting and accepting the situation at the time it was created, right? Art is great when it's a lens used to view a point in time through! Can't wait to read it!

Definitely! Imagine in 10 years when we look back at 2020 - we want to see art that reflected the feeling of the times, not just art that swept everything under the carpet. You'll be getting one of the four copies, along with my mum, wife and Luke. How lucky you are!

I think there's still a huge market for dystopian stories, so I'd be interested in reading yours :) Also, dystopian is a way for people to escape the reality and think "sh**, it can really be worse." I mean it can remind us that there's always worse than what we are living.

I totally agree! I think dystopian stories can actually be really hopeful, because they teach us where we could go wrong. They show us a path we can avoid. I think that's important during a time like this. Hopefully you'll get to read it one day :)

When I hear the words ‘dystopian / post-apocalyptic’ I have to roll my eyes. All too often it’s a lazy zombie/‘infected’ storyline with a small band of survivors trying to avoid getting bitten. Thank you Walking Dead / 28 Days Later - great shows but pretty much all there is to be said on the theme, for me. I enjoyed The Handmaid’s Tale more and it was probably you who mentioned it to me years ago as a more disturbing vision of how things might be some day (infertility being another repeated, but more plausible, theme in this genre). But for me, I love the realism of The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Written in six weeks. Little punctuation and no speech (at least quotation marks), as is the author’s sparse style of less is more. The description of the lead character -The Man - watching a solitary bird fly across a lake in this desolate world stopped me dead.

The Road is an incredible piece of work, and it was you who introduced it to me. I hated it when I first read it, but then I tried again and I couldn't put it down. It's so stripped back, so desolate, it really gives a sense of what "the man" is feeling, and what the world has become. It doesn't always have to be zombies, robots, asteroids, and so on. I wonder what the next great "end of the world" story will be.

I appreciate a good dystopian story :) just not with zombies because it gives me nightmares. But I think people are choosing escapism because they're afraid that the ones they read in the books (for example, a global pandemic) has actually happened and maybe they couldn't handle it. But I would love to read the story you wrote :) especially when you said it deals with a family :)

Zombies are definitely one of the more scary ones aren't they? I think it's because they're essentially human so maybe we can see ourselves in them. Hopefully one day you'll get to read my dystopian novel! :)

Oh that sounds cool! From what I've seen, readers are more than happy to read dystopian fiction during a time like this. It just seems that the traditional publishing avenues aren't as keen on it right now. Maybe that'll change - we'll see :)

I've said in my video about how to write pandemics and I feel like we're going to have lots of this real-world type of scenario once ppl stop being so triggered by it. That, or we'll NEVER see it again 😂 But I believe at some point it'll become cathartic for people an esxapism like you say. People will get to that point where it's just as enjoyable to write a dystopian as any other type of books. Definitely a cool discussion!

I think you're right Arabella! I guess different genres come in and out of fashion. Personally, I'm enjoying reading all kinds of dystopian fiction right now - everything from The Road to The Hunger Games. I'll check out your pandemic video, I don't believe I've seen that one yet. Feel free to post it as a link here :)
