Officially the most amazing thing I've ever done...
I was working with the Emily Dickinson museum and homestead for a week, and they gave me this incredible experience. I am so grateful to them for this x

In a weird way, it kind of makes me sad when people say, “I hope to a writer one day,” or anything along those lines because for me, if you write then you are a writer. You don’t need to wait for accolades or permission to be something that you already in a sense are, inherently. If you love to paint, then you’re a painter. If you love to dance, then you’re a dancer. I know Ruby means it in the sense that writing is something which she aspires to, but Ruby, you are a writer and a creator. You don’t need a stamp of approval to be what you are.

I visited her house in the winter of ‘96. We arrived very early, before the museum had opened. No one was there but us. An inch of wet snow had fallen overnight. We got out of the car to have a look at the grounds and noticed a small set of foot prints coming from Emily’s house and down the path to her brother’s house. I’m not one to believe in ghosts… but that day was memorable!

I don't quite know how to express it but something about you writing a poem in Emily Dickinson's bedroom just felt right. It really seemed like you belonged there, like you'd always sat there writing... No wonder it was such an incredible experience for you! I think, if Emily Dickinson was alive today, the two of you would be really good friends 🥰

You ARE a writer. I say this as someone who is just now being published for the first time (a short story in an anthology coming out next month). I used to say I'm aspiring to be a writer, then I'm aspiring to be a published writer. Now I saw I'm building a career as a writer. Because I am a writer! I just don't make a living off of it...yet.

Such a beautiful room! It suddenly dawned on me that it makes sense to have a small desk like that. If you think about it, if you're writing, reading, or even eating, you don't take up much space. The rest of a big ol' desk gets taken up with storage/holding stuff. I never thought about it that way. Your poem was lovely, Ruby! Since it's written in pencil, see if there's some way to laminate or spray with something to preserve it. I know it doesn't seem like it right now, but years go by quickly. As time passes, and depending on the quality of the pencil and the paper, it may fade and become unreadable. You don't want these memories lost. I'm so glad you had this opportunity. Thank you for sharing it with us.

I watched this video during my study break and It's so inspiring that I want to start writing again. I've had writer's block for nearly 5 years now, and every time I sit down to write something I can't seem to find the right words. Perhaps I'm putting so much pressure on myself thinking that whatever I write has to be good. This video opened my eyes to the possibility of writing for the pleasure of doing it, without the pressure of excelling at it. I'm gonna try to start writing poems again. On pieces of scrap paper and on bus tickets, anywhere really. Just like Emily did. Thank you Ruby, for such a wonderful video ♥ btw sorry if I have any grammatical or spelling mistakes, English isn't my first language :)

The things you say about perfectionism in writing have struck a chord with me. I have over the years thrown away countless journals and notebooks because the words I pinned to paper were not perfect. I saw flaws in my handwriting, the actual words pinned, and sometimes the subject matter. You have inspired me too start again to journal my thoughts. And this time I will do my best to not be so critical of my work, but allow the words to flow as they come. To allow the mistakes happen, because mistakes are often a natural part of life and growth.

You have certainly"breathed life into graphite". This is lovely writing. One thing though - Emily's scraps relate to two things you may not be aware of. 1) paper was really expensive. It made sense to recycle every scrap. Here's an example you'd probably relate to: Given the other books you mention, I think you'd enjoy L M Montgomery's Emily of New Moon (Emily is an aspiring writer). It's Edwardian, not civil war era, but even then paper is a luxury (which becomes a plot point). Rather than tearing new paper or scribbling over a page, may I recommend compiling your own notebooks of recycled paper - flyers, envelopes, receipts etc? 2) Emily Dickinson reputedly noted down ideas as they occured to her during the day. I remember reading a contemporary (the source eludes me) who said she always carried a pencil in her apron pocket. I've always thought that accounted for lots of her envelope and lolly wrapper poems. 3. (Cause I can't count) Have you read other letters of the period? I get the impression not too many writers followed the etiquette guide, especially to their friends and family. Perhaps it was intended like formal vs informal letters today...
