Have you played this adventure before? If so, was it as a Player or a Dungeon Master?

Yes ran it twice, once with 5 and once with 9 players. Second time around as a (near)TPK and campaign ender, but both sets of players felt it was the best scenario they ever played. The fact you can (in fact almost have to) use the resources inside the city intelligently made it a challenge, players often fought over who to ally with (one tried to ally with a crippled red dragon I added, costing 7 of 9 lives).

Played it during university. Had fun but Was always disappointed that we never found the lair of the Yuan Ti or the goods they had been stealing. I bought it a few years ago and had to phone up my old DM and apologize . I've spent the last year or so off and on filling in a lot of the empty buildings. It's a great sand box but it's empty.

I am using the city as part of Isle of Dread. I am placing it inside the caldera instead of the normal island that is found there. I am coupling this with The Lost City and Zargon in place of the kopru as the BBEG.

Thanks for the review of i1. I’m glad to see continued interested in a mod I played in 1981. So I wanted to respond to your comments about how the module is set up, providing some background. The module was designed for tournament play in the 1980 Origins Convention. Groups had four hours (Yes, 4!) to smash their way into the city, grab as much loot as possible and then quickly escape. Doing what you said you dislike about the module is exactly what players were told to do for a win, and i1 was designed to accommodate this type of play. This design also made it easier for DMs to run at Origins as everything is set up and ready to run (players are dropped off at one entrance by a guide, so the GM were only supposed to read the 1 entrance they picked randomly ahead of time). I agree the add on self-development stuff Has great value for play expanded beyond the normal 4 hours. Personally, I thought this added to the value of the mod as it makes outlines in the sandbox that really develop the original setting you only get a small sampling of in intended play. So thanks again for your review. I would love to see you post your expansions.

Exactly... early modules and tournament play were gear up, explore dungeon, kill monsters, take loot and get out affairs.

Can you buy the early modules? Or has WofwC reprinted the modules? Can they be played with 5e?

You can buy the original modules on DMsGuild but they will be in their original 1e version. However, they are conversion files you can buy for each module on the DMsGuild as well.

Are there people that still play the old modules? I still have my Giant series i found in my closet.. Are there any were you can get players hand book without paying 200 dollars for? I reay loved the art from those set books....
