MSPs have been told how a blind former health worker has been reduced to begging as a result of the UK government's welfare reforms.

This is so widespread its rediculous. My mother in law who had a stroke had been back and forward to a brain specialist at the hospital. As she was a social worker which needed computer work she had been signed off work. After several falls and accidents at home the specialist at the hospital stated there has been a serious cerebral impairment due to the stroke that had damaged her balance and memory. The DSS sent her for a jobcentre so called examination where these arse holes signed her fit for work. She had to be taken to the appointment after losing her driving licence due to the brain injury. The DSS stopped her money as she had not been actively searching for work. The staff at the DSS jobcentre were absolutely disgusted that she had been sent for back to work interviews and reported the staff concerned through their management. The statistics pushed by the government had a zero tolerance to unemployed people regardless of illness or injuries. The company doing those farse so called medicals being paid for the people they signed back to work had serious and sometimes life threatening many resulting in deaths or suicides because of the position they were put in. Needless to say the Scottish and UK government passed the buck on reports and complaints. Time the bastards in government are held accountable

If you have a condition that will never change then why should he have to see a medical assessor ever again? The anxiety of attending one of these appointments, even when you know you are qualified for your benefit, is through the roof. Bad enough that you have to live on benefits for the rest of your life, but to have your disability questioned constantly is pressure that is unnecessary.

My wife was visited by a so-called doctor and now fewer doctors will do the job they are using physiotherapists under the guise of Healthcare Professionals from Atos. My wife has arthritis plus other chronic conditions we explained that her joints dislocated easily. Maybe he did not believe us and he pulled on my wife's shoulder so hard he dislocated it!!! (To those who think disabled people are a burden on society I say this my wife today you tomorrow: what goes around comes around.) If capitalism cannot help the most vulnerable in society, then it has had its day. I think there is a growing realisation here and in America that capitalist greed and avarice has shown how that system corrupts: to quote Mr John Lennon; " there is room at the top they are telling you still but first you must learn how to smile as you kill." This of course has been going on a long time as the Bard himself put it; "That one can smile and smile and be a villain." A political system should be judged by the way it treats its most vulnerable members of society. Having said that we both blame those who took advantage of a benefits system that was the G in Great Britain and blame them for some of the draconian measures now because they enabled the genuine to be vilified so as to be persecuted with impunity. However, as explained above there is no need to make peoples life a misery it contravenes human rights and plain decency. This capitalist government is drooling as it imposes pain and misery on truly disabled people. I think it is common knowledge that sociopaths and psychopaths rule; this because they will do things no decent person would and here they are doing it to the weakest members of society. I have never been unemployed you say so I am fine: no you are next after they have dealt with the weak. It makes sense to start with the weak and when you get to the strongest they are so few they don't stand a chance so we must band together now and stop this carnage. Do not believe their lies your future unless you are a member of the one percent depends on it: if you don't when they come for you and your family you will only have yourself to blame. Although ordinary people can and do do well under capitalism they are in a minority. David Cameron on the other hand is an ex-Etonian who it has been said wrecked a restaurant with his over privileged fellow Etonians then proceeded to burn £50 notes in front of a homeless man. That's what we have for a Prime Minister who got where he is on nepotism. Look at what Gordon Bowden ex-R.A.F (KZfaq) has to say about what our Prime Minister has been up to -sadly it does not surprise me. Henchman Ian Duncan Smith is following his lead they know no bounds. Well, to quote the Bard again: goodness and mercy seem vile to the vile; filths savour but themselves."

The moment when you realize that the taxes you pay are enforced and thus count as a form of extortion. If you don't like the 'service' you're getting for paying taxes, you are not allowed to not pay under threat of being coerced (arrested) for earning a living. Can I tell my neighbour that a portion of their money is mine, and can I, upon doing this, force them to pay when I do? Of course not. I'd be arrested for extortion. Yet the tax system in place is exactly the same. The system in effect claims a higher power than you, yourself, have. This is unlawful, unethical, and blatantly evil.

there is no law that states you cannot film within your own home especially when being served by public officials. That is why they cannot provide evidence of the laws. Never turn them off.
@lang19525 жыл бұрын
I have cameras in my home with a notice on my front door, just like job centres have them, making it clear they are remotely controlled and monitored for my safety, the ATOS "doctor" came in and said I had to turn them off, I said I can't, so she went outside rang someone and said she was going if they weren't turned off and left. I eventually, option3, had to make a painful journey to a 1st floor office, the closest to me, where I was put in an office chair and wheeled into the assessment. I live in a 1st floor flat and it is difficult for me to get out so anywhere with stairs is designed to inflict pain. Their initial 1st option was 2 train journeys with long walks to the other side of London in the rush hour! ( I have FM which means any physical even slight contact is painful), the 2nd one took 15 steps before I could even get in the building, thank god for google earth I could check them out first and say no way. I put them on the spot about going up in a building as they had to guarantee MY safety, at the expense of theirs, in event of a fire and all the lifts out of action, they couldn't of course. It took 3 years before I finally got a medical diagnosis, even that was because I did the research and presented it to the consultant, instead of a string of seemingly unrelated, they were related, symptoms and I got no help from the SS in all that time. Now I have the medical help and the deterioration has stopped but they did not help my mental health and all the delays and lies, the very first one I ever saw lied, she "saw" something she couldn't possibly have seen and even if she had been able to "see" it would have been me sitting down to rest half way and not walking the full distance but no video evidence to prove otherwise, all of which has just made my condition worse by speeding up the inevitable damage. The EHRC finally funded me to take action against ATOS and the DWP as they made no provision for disabled people, before it got to court both of them agreed they would make provision for me in future, anyone can have copies of the letters if they want and the DWP are off the hook now, as far as they are concerned as I am retired. ATOS still send out appointment letters instead of picking up a telephone and calling me to make an agreed date, so it always gets cancelled as it clashes with pre-arranged medical appointments, how do they manage to know that?, I am not going to cancel those as it takes forever to get another one.

I have copd and rheumatoid arthritis as well as osteo arthritis. I have been penalised for breathing problems with copd, asthma, as well as lost control of my bladder. I was asked why do I have these issues, you're a young lady. It's your body why have you have all these issues. Is it because you like being like that to claim money from the tax payer. I ask "what do you mean by that?" I got told "well isn't it obvious you sooner claim benefits instead of looking for work" well I didn't know what to say after that. So I said have you read my notes from my GP or is that all my head too. Well if you can talk and use your hands then you should be fit for work, instead of being on benefits I was told. "do you have rheumatoid arthritis?" I asked her. "no I don't" she said. "well you don't know how painful it is then do you" I told her. "look it can't be that bad surely, you are on medication for it you should be better by now you are playing on it, making it worse than it is" she said. I was ready to let rip as I tried to tell her how it affects me day to day and suffer from tiredness and breathing difficulties. But she fails to understand as I told her I suffer from depression trying to end my life, she asked "why aren't you dead then?" "because they got to me in time that's why!" I told her as I was in tears. Can you imagine how I feel every morning when I can't get out of bed some mornings as I'm so ill with my rheumatoid arthritis, can you?! " I asked. I can imagine but it' can't be that bad, I am not saying some days it is but some people make it worse than it already is" she told me. It took one and a half hours, I was glad to be back home. I felt like I was being judged for my illness, not how it affects me.

The current guidelines mean that this man can avoid going for an assessment by getting appropriate medical evidence once every 3 years which states that he is completely blind and unable to use braille (assuming that is the case). A GP letter is perfect for this. As long as the evidence is submitted with the routine reapplication and is ideally less than 1 year old then he should be automatically put into the support group at the initial review stage. Without this they will usually ask for medical evidence from the GP. NHS GPs are contractually required to provide this within a set time frame, but often don't bother or leave it too long because they get hundreds of these requests and are nusy actually treating people, meaning that the claimant gets called for assessment due to lack of supporting evidence. If there is no recent evidence the policy from the DWP is to call for assessment. The 3 year rule in my opinion is fucking stupid for lifelong or degenerative conditions, but this is how it stands, so it's what you need to work around. A little bit of effort in getting decent, relevant and in date evidence from a GP or appropriate specialist and submitting this with the completed questionnaire can save someone from having to go through unnecessary assessments. A tip is to bring a copy of the ESA50 application form with you to the GP and get them to make SPECIFIC reference to the descriptors they believe that you meet (if any) and why you meet it in the letter. It's about taking ownership of your own health and financial wellbeing by putting in a little bit of effort at the application stage. The system is shit, but it is what it is.
@muskndusk8 жыл бұрын
+PaddyInf Not all GPs are willing to provide this evidence. For example, a gp I've been with for the last 2yrs (and don't like) was asked for evidence to support a claim and replied "I don't do that"! I have a friend/neighbour who has heart failure and when the guy asked him for a letter to give to the DWP was told by this gp that he should find a job!
@PaddyInf8 жыл бұрын
Then that is the fault of the GP. If they are unwilling to give you a letter saying you are not fit to work - maybe you are. If they are just bejng difficult then your problem should be with the GP. However if a serious condition is reported on the ESA50 the GP will routinely be asked for evidence by CHDA (who now do the assessments) usually using form ESA113. GPs are CONTRACTUALLY OBLIGED to complete this both in their NHS contract and by their governing body, the GMC. If they still don't provide this and in the absence of supporting evidence then CHDA has no option but to call you for assessment.
@muskndusk8 жыл бұрын
+PaddyInf I'm changing my GP. I don't like him anyway. I have a very serious condition (which I'm not naming because it carries social stigma) for which there is empirical evidence (scans) and it's been witnessed by the staff at the GP surgery. The meds for this illness (which don't work) have caused other illnesses: neutropenia and severe osteoporosis. When I received the appt letter for the assessment, I rang him and asked for a letter concerining my conditions which I could take with me. He told me: "you telling me that you have this condition is the same as you telling them"! In other words he didn't believe me despite prescribing meds for it and having scan results! I managed to get a printed summary of my history which only goes back to the 2yrs I've been his patient (I moved house). So I'm registering at another local practise.

+PaddyInf Found this on the Benefits and Work website: "some health professionals may refuse to write you a letter, saying that it’s now a matter for the DWP, or they may say they will only write a letter if you are willing to pay for it. Health professionals are not under any duty to provide you with supporting letters, so unfortunately they are within their rights to refuse or to ask for money. Sometimes a health professional will say that they will only write if the DWP contacts them. This may be because they can charge the DWP for providing evidence." etc .....

The people complaining and calling the government disgusting should donate money to this man. Each of you donate £1 a day, and this man would not have to depend on money given by government and taken from tax-payers. The problem with this country is that we're addicted to government spending. Despite the so-called 'savage cuts', the government debt is actually increasing. The 'cuts' are not cuts to the debt or even cuts to the deficit or even cuts to spending. The 'cuts' are reductions in projected increases in spending. So, if you previously planned to increase the budget by £20 million, but now you're going to increase it by 'only' £10 million, that's labelled a 'cut'. This country is hurtling towards bankruptcy. It's been living far beyond its means for far too long. Printing money or taxing more doesn't create wealth. It only destroys wealth. Ultimately, a welfare state bankrupts itself, which is what we're seeing now. If we all helped our friends and families as our means allowed, there would be no poverty.

If all the money hidden away by the City of London in tax havens was repatriated and taxed, this Country would be massively in surplus. The poor are constantly paying for the stinking rich and the gap keeps getting bigger and bigger. Amazing how they all talk about 'getting the best profits and keeping it... thats Capitalism', no socialising of the profits but as soon as their Ponzi scheme crashes it's 'I'm so important, my debt must be socialised'.

centrepointcentre Well, I oppose the bail-outs. The Labour Party chose to bail out the banks and then... complained about how much the bail-outs had cost! I don't blame the banks, or any individual or business, for taking money that's offered to them. I blame the government. Most critics of the bank bail-outs are utter hypocrites.

YorickReturns Have you ever thought about the consequences of them not bailing out the banks?

This isn't a question of tax payers versus benefit claimants, it's a question of the rich versus the poor and vulnerable and working class. In our capitalist system it's the wealthy who gobble up most of society's wealth by exploiting workers, and they should be made to pay since they're are the real scroungers and leeches not benefit claimants.

FirstHomeAgain So there's this 'wealth' that magically appears out of nowhere. And then 'the rich' gobble it up. Right...

I always thought that society is judged on how we take care of the sick and the vulnerable. . Maybe the Westminster parties with the ties to big businesses and the banks would pause for a second and think of those less fortunate.. I doubt that will ever be the case. IDC is not the right man and the tories are looking like they always do.. The rich persons party.. I'm amazed we haven't witnessed the reinstatement of fox hunting.
