Hi, I am really sorry for my pronunciation of…pretty much everything. I did a lot of research, and it turns out there are people on the internet just making up pronunciations 😅 Next time I do a video like this I will be sure to find someone local to help me do it right. Thank you for watching and please be sure to go support the hero of today’s essay - Iam Tongi 🎉 @officialiamtongi

I appreciate you doing the extensive research and I thank you for acknowledging the beauty and more importantly the continuous struggles we live through in Hawaii. “Priced out of paradise” pretty much explains it. Do not apologize for your pronunciation as you did just perfectly. Believe it or not, the okina’s (‘) and kahako’s (ā) are actually part of the Hawaiian alphabet, meaning ITS THAT IMPORTANT and you said pronounced the words like Ha’aha’a and Lōkahi correctly 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽Mahalo for taking the time out to learn our culture and history❤️ Aloha Nui

I'm 54, for the first time in my life I balled like a baby listening to someone sing. He pretty much made me human once again, I'm raising two boys alone, and I couldnt Imagine leaving them . Iam is so young , He was meant to be up there changing the world. with that kind of power he could help us all and make the world an equal place of living and striving for everyone. We need Iam today, We need Iam to help us all become human . To start caring for each-other as Iam was cared for from all the world on that very first audition.

Hi JM, I totally resonate with that. I tend to be a bit of an emotional crybaby, but it has to really tug at my heartstrings. There is something about Iam that just gets to me every time he sings or talks about his father. "We need Iam to help us all become human" - that is exactly what I hoped people would learn from my video. Sounds like you already understand the power and importance of being human, of caring for those around us like humanity was always supposed to. I really appreciate you being here. Thank you for your comment and for taking the time to check out my video. 💜

This is awesome! Thank you for helping the rest of the world and the mainland (continental US) learn about Hawaii’s history as we know it is only taught here in Hawaii and not on the mainland. Calvin, thank you for your comment. This was exactly the purpose of my video. I spent almost 20 years in school and never once heard of a Hawaiian Monarchy 😔 Westerners have issues respecting the cultures of the islands they visit, and I feel it is much worse for Hawai'i since they see it as a part of the US. I hope this video reaches many, because it changed the way I see Hawaii (and other 'tourist destinations') as a whole. I never really had much interest in visiting because it seemed like a really far flight to go to the beach. (I live in Florida, beaches are everywhere.) Now, I feel like it is totally worth a visit just to learn about the culture and be surrounded by people who are true to their history. I hope I can make some friends there to have the opportunity to stay local, as I'm not really into all the tourist stuff...especially after what I've learned smh

As a part Hawaiian thank you for show casing the diversity of Hawaii you have nailed many wrongs that went on in our humble island, but many of us who are still here have made adjustments in our daily lives just to live here and I wouldn’t change it. Music has always been part of lives of our people of all cultural background if you get invited to kamainas homes you would undoubtedly be mesmerized by seeing a ukulele or guitar ready to be played and serenaded by music and that is life.

Hi Lani, thank you for leaving a comment and checking out my video. I thought it was so special when I heard that Iam used to take his guitar everywhere - even in school, where the teachers had to ask him to put it away haha 😆 To see him and his father in the home videos on his KZfaq channel makes me believe you even more, and I pray one day I get invited into kamainas homes if I ever make it to Hawaii. 🌺 Ever since I made this video, I have no interest in participating in Westernized Hawaiian tourism. I've noticed a lot of people say the same thing and I think that might be why I love him so much. Bob Marley is one of my favorite singers ever and the reason I fell in love with reggae. To hear Iam bring the Island flair to all his covers makes the songs so much better 😆 I would rather hear his version than the original singer. I don't think he will change... he's always loved to share good music and as long as he has a chance to do just that, I believe his good upbringing will serve him well. Thanks for your comment!

Very very impressed with your video which I found on the World Upside Right channel. Hawaii has a population of only 1.4 million and we are so very proud of any Hawaii-born person who achieves national celebrity--and I believe that we have more Hawaii-born talent per capita than any other state, from singers, actors, and athletes to even a President! The three Hawaii news channels will always mention anyone newsworthy who has a "Hawaii connection" and support or promote those who are deserving. Cheering on "one of our own" has been ingrained in us. Possibly it's because we're such a small population, but also due to our culture of aloha. Thank you for recognizing Iam and our state. P.S. I'm of Japanese ancestry and my father fought in WW2 in the 442nd regiment, another pride of Hawaii. 2:37

Aloha, wow after just watching this video, like Iam Tongi, you’ve also touched my heart. The research you’ve done to create the art of this video’s story is the meaning of ALOHA. Thank you for show casing the culture and straggles of Hawaii. Your pronunciations of our Hawaiian word’s meant more and sank in even deeper then the meaning in itself, it was heart warming, all because you took the time to learn and do it correctly. You are a artist and a great story teller. Polynesians didn’t only use voice language to communicate, it also included body language such as Hula to express the emotions of the journey whatever it maybe. Again, thank you for this heart touching video!!!

Iam has certainly opened the door that will bring interest to mainlanders to visit Hawai'i. Like me, he has some issues with ADHD and it can make it tough to speak up sometimes. I know he will find his voice soon, and I believe people will listen to him - especially people in his generation. Idk there’s a soothing tone to his voice. Like it’s hertz has to be 432 or something because I am transported when I hear him sing. He literally resurrected American Idol single-handedly. I ate up every episode. Recorded the season and listen to his songs still. I bought his new single on iTunes. I bawled every time I saw his audition because I’m a daddy’s girl and I miss my dad. It’s that Iam factor that drew me in and to this day I’m still arguing with anyone who is negative towards him or his music. Makes me so protective and I never want to see him cry again.

Grace, this is such a wonderful video essay. We are from Hawaii but now live in Washington state. We've been talking a lot about how much the world could use some of that aloha spirit and love what you said about it and the Hawaiian values. You may enjoy a book by a friend of ours. It's called "Aloha State of Mind" by Leialoha Humpherys. In it, she shares several Hawaiian values and how to adopt them in our lives and carry and share aloha wherever we are. We had her on our podcast where she talked about some of her favorite values and it aligns so well with what you shared here. Mahalo again for your wonderful video.

Isnt Seattle almost as expensive as living in Hawaii? I was born and raised in Hawaii myself, but moved to the 9th island, Las Vegas lol.
@GSSG__official
@GSSG__official Жыл бұрын
I know, right! I was thinking about that when I was doing the research. In my work with homeless individuals in Florida, I learned that some people will stay in a bad spot or go to a place that isn’t much better if they have a “village” of sorts. Resources are really important, especially if you’re struggling. Maybe Rodney and Lillie were able to connect with family or friends out there, or got a good job? Maybe they moved to the outskirts of Seattle where it might be a little more affordable. 🤔 I used to live in Vegas in the years before the shooting. First by UNLV then in Centennial Hills… It was pretty cheap even by the strip, but moving up to the edge of the city was the best thing we did because it was so inexpensive. I wonder if Seattle has any cheaper spots like that? I was first introduced to Hawaiian food in Vegas and I really hope I can go try some authentic foods on the island 🙏 Iam got me hungry for short ribs! Thanks for the comment 🙏 stay cool in Vegas this summer 🥵

Not entirely. I think the only other areas in America that are just as expensive or more expensive than Hawaii, would probably be New York City and Miami Florida.

@@TheMixedPlateFrequency Hawaii is the 3rd most expensive place to live in the United States after Los Angeles and San Diego according to a recent U.S. News survey. Miami was 4th, and New York was the 11th most expensive place to live. Seattle is 13th on the list.
@GSSG__official
@GSSG__official Жыл бұрын
There are many places in Miami that fall outside of the 'fancy' areas (i.e. South Beach, Brickell, etc.), where prices are more reasonable. I think that same is probably true of most metros, so it's possible there are some places in Seattle that aren't nearly as bad as Hawaii. For someone moving from the 3rd most expensive place to the 13th most expensive place, logic would say accommodations would still be more affordable in the latter.

Hi Linda, I am a Messianic Jewish believer of The Way. I appreciate you sharing your perspective on Yeshua (the name means Salvation in Hebrew). Please keep in mind this is not a religious channel; in order to reach more people to allow Iam to share his message, I did not share my religious beliefs. Did you know Iam is a believer, too? He and his father Rodney shared a number of Christian songs on his KZfaq channel, You should check it out. While Yeshua saved the world, I pray Iam can save us from ourselves to start. Be blessed and have peace, for we our saved regardless.

Hawaii was saved by the US. I’d love to hear from people today if Hawaii was taken control of by Japan instead. Not sure they would have the same stories to tell. I get why people are upset about martial law. I feel like we were close to that while Trump was in office. I think we are all still in jeopardy as long as anyone uses their feelings instead of rules or laws to rule a civilization. To many people have feelings that judge and criticize instead of evenly rule and help everyone.
