note that reason why the t-shirt sleeve is so comfortable while the armhole is cut so low is because the fabric is strechy. If you want more comfort in the arm on a less giving fabric, you'll want the armscye to be cut higher to allow for a full range of movement (an armscye cut lower will create friction and tension when rising the arm) and the sleeve can (and probably should) be left a bit larger than the armhole having the top eased into the correct length, the sleeve will then encapsulate the begining of the shoulder giving enough ease to rise the arms comfortable but not so much it becomes a puffed sleeve (it's also a great way to have a knitted jacket look more like a blazer because it's how tailored pieces are generally cut : make the head of the sleevehead a bit wider than normal, ease it into the armscye when sewing it in)

This is why dolman sleeves look like they will be comfortable, but actually require you to keep your arms pinned to your side. Any arm movement upwards moves the entire garment up, off the body, causing bystanders to woner if you are about to disrobe!

So should the curve on the sleeve be shallow or is that not necessary if the armscye is high.

I found this video in my feed today 8/29 after wondering for the last week or two about drafting sleeves of different styles and why the cap is shaped like it is and how you can know it will fit the armhole if you change either one for fit or style. When you showed the tube then cut it then unfolded it to reveal the classic shape of a sleeve, it was an “aha!” moment. I have questions on modifying sleeves for various styles like puffed or full (at the bottom), etc, or how to modify armhole for fit and style then changing the sleeve to fit it. I don’t draw well so I want to use something made then tweak for styles and fit. Thank you for making this- now I need to watch more of your videos!

Thanks for explaining sleeves so well. I mostly crochet and want to crochet sweaters for my friends and family. But I find many crochet patterns rely on the basic balloon sleeve, ending with a ribbing at the cuff. I, myself, do not care for that and I know if I make a sweater like that for my brother he won't wear it, either. It's fine for a cardigan, maybe. But with a pull-over, it should taper more and fit the shoulder properly. There are several techniques (raglan and fair isle, for instance) that attempt to address this, but I would simply like to make a traditional, tapered sleeve. As I am in the process of making one (from the bottom up) this information will come in handy. Thank you! I just happened to find your channel and this video on my home page (or how ever KZfaq terms the first page you see when you login), probably because I had done a search for 'crochet sweater sleeves.' The "sleeves" part must have stuck. Algorithms, go figure. But I can see it's a great channel for the finer points of sewing clothing and I'll keep it in mind. Thanks!

Hi Cornelius, love your content as always! I drafted a prototype shirt according to your other tutorials and it was a lot of fun! I do have some questions though. At 14:53 in this video you measure the straight line as the same measurement of the armhole - is that the length along the curve, including the seam allowance? And are the new lines that are drawn for the version of the pattern with seam allowances at 17:04 inside or outside of the original lines drawn? As an aside; I also attempted drafting a shirt according to the "tailored shirt" block on roughly page 233 of the Aldrich book. For the sleeves a lot of the measurements are based around fractions of the "arm scye measurement" - do you happen to know if this measurement refers to the circumference of the scye ? With or without seam allowances? I hope I am not being too demanding - I am just really keen to make this work and get it right. Cheers and greetings from Toronto
@CorneliusQuiring
@CorneliusQuiring 11 ай бұрын
The length of those straight lines is the length of the stitch lines on each pattern piece. The goal wit those straight lines is to just get us in the ballpark of the right length. It isn't 100% precise. The second set of lines are drawn inside the first batch of lines that I drew. As I recall reading in the book, seam allowances are included . Happy Sewing.

I've been learning how to draft sewing patterns (self-taught thanks to KZfaq) the past 2 years. When I was watching the part where you draft the sleeve, it looked like you used the measurements from the armhole front and back with no seam allowance included and when you drew out your sleeve cap that became the cutting line and you marked a seam line inside of those measurements. That may be why my sleeve caps have been coming out a bit too big requiring adjustments every time. As presented, I use the armhole measurements to create my sleeve, but once I draw in the curve from the desired cap height, I add the seam allowance on after I get the correct lengths and desired ease to more closely match the armhole (depending on how fitted it may be). I also got some other helpful pointers, but this one really jumped out at me. Thank you for a very helpful tutorial and wishing you continued success.

Last year I struggled searching for a vedio explaning how I draft a pattern for an arm sleeve. And so I gave up the whole sewing thing. I came back to it now and I'm super glad that your video was the first that came up. This vedio is a total gem and I'm pretty sure you've explain for us what could be normally learned through out a whole decade of experience. Thank you sir and hopefully I'll make this right this time. ✨
