An amazing group of real musicians in the punk era with a lead vocalist who was like nothing that came before or after .Ian was a real one off ,What a legend

Aside from the killer band and songwriting, Dury was a phenomenal performer. His movements were so theatrical and precise, the expressiveness of his eyes alone could carry a music video. I love his spontaneous reaction when the mic causes some feedback. I guess he knew that his body was limited in movement so he made the most of what he had, and he used it fantastically. Not every frontman can be this charismatic while standing in one spot. An actor, a musician, a mime and a sad clown.

Newcastle Australia 1981 Civic Theatre - I was a teen, blown away, stood up and danced my arse off to the whole set - to the chagrin of the bouncers . My best friend and I loved 'New Boots and Panties' and 'Do It Yourself" (and Kilburn and the High Roads) and we used to sing all the lyrics all the way to school every day. Then they came to town and we saw them, it was the best band ever! to this day. In that year we saw Bowie, Cold Chisel and Ian Dury and the Blockheads and those three gigs were mind-blowingly great. I've seen great gigs since (including Wilco and Norman Watt Roy - twice!) but that particular gig remains an outstanding experience in my life.

If you are not from East London or Essex a lot of the lyrics might go over your head. A lot of in jokes, wordplay, innuendos and double entendres. God only knows what this German audience made of it all. But top marks for Ian Dury trying to converse with the audience. Still this band can’t half groove and that’s a universal language
@PeterSpaeter96
@PeterSpaeter96 4 ай бұрын
I suppose you're right about the East London or Essex bit. But as a partial apology for the German audience I'd like to point out that Ian's mashup of English and mock German is far more difficult to understand than if he had only spoken English. It doesn't quite seem to be meant to make sense at all.

I was lucky enough to see them at Buffalo State College , Buffalo NY April 28, 1978. To this day the BEST! live show I've ever seen. Right from the moment Kozmo Vinyl introduced them to the final note of the show pure magic. That night is burned into my brain. The ticket cost $4 AND they spelled Dury wrong on the ticket. We loved Lou Reed but the Blockheads blew him off the stage. Just saying

Apparently true in a few places on that tour - Lou was not well pleased..............(I saw Led Zep and Keith Richard's New Barbarians at Knebworth in 1979 and the next day, Ian Dury at the Hammersmith Odeon - London... - same - Incredible (and we got in free...........Lesley.....There's recording (9 songs) of 9.8.1979 on a site called G-u-i-t-a-r-s One oh one (use the right spelling and numbers)............also recommend "Hold on to your structure" DVD Hammersmith 1985.....I went to the one on the 12th.

I remember he tried to get the audience to sing along to the song 'Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll' and my friend and I were the ONLY TWO PEOPLE singing along. He put his hand above his eyes, peered out into the audience at us, waved, and called out, 'Thanks for trying anyway!' It was one of the best shows ever, and one of the most piss poor audiences!

I was lucky enough to see them in February 1979 in the very week that Rhythm Stick was #1. I was working at Chesters, a concert venue in Portrush in Ireland. We booked them a few months earlier, and some weeks before they were due we received their latest single from Stiff - Rhythm Stick c/w Clever Bastards. On the night my job was to look after them in the green room and they were lovely people. Ian was so friendly. I was wearing a silly hat I’d bought at a jumble sale and he signed his poster 'Bryan is a cocoon of hattie'. They were totally brilliant. His personality just filled the place. I’ve seen lots of live music and he is up there with the best. The following night they played at Queens University Belfast as part of the Rock Goes to College series. I also saw him with the Music Students in Dartford. They were great, and Ian was Ian, but they weren’t the Blockheads. We also had the second Be Stiff Tour at Chesters which was by far the biggest event we staged. Most of that tour was done by train but the Irish section was by road. Quite a small venue, and they turned up - a party of 52 in a coach with two artics. Dave Robinson was there, dandling a baby on his knee.
