The Bond Experience

Күн бұрын

Fleming's home at GoldenEye has been a Holy Grail of locations for me for a long time, so come along as I take you on a personal and intimate tour of the villa from a fan and historical point of view. Unprecedented access is generously given to us so we can walk in the footsteps of the creator of James Bond, while also better understanding WHY Fleming chose this spot and Jamaica itself for his creative muse. We discuss his daily routine, his choices for his surroundings, and explain the emotional feeling of being in his world even for just a day.
Special thanks to the wonderful people at GoldenEye! www.goldeneye.com/
BTW, this is my 700th video on KZfaq! Seems appropriate, eh?

When David is not running an advertising and marketing company, his hobby is The Bond Experience which is primarily a video blog where he discusses Bond experiences and the people and brands that help to create those experiences...
The mantra of living like Bond, one moment at a time emanates from a concept of experiencing the joy of collecting small moments in life that add up to amazing journeys and stories....whether it's through style, locations, literature, fitness, and the movies themselves the world of Bond is explored through its people and their stories.
Ultimately though, The Bond Experience channel is a celebration of the James Bond franchise and the many people that form a true community. Our core mission is to create a strong connection in the Bond community amongst all the fans, regardless of interest or demographic.

I truly enjoyed your highly fictionalized account of Ian Flemings Goldeneye house. We rented the estate in 1970 or ‘71. It consisted of only the house and a little side cabana a brief walk away where Fleming did his writing. That chair and desk are iffy and were not in a bedroom, if they existed at all. The house was pretty basic back then and was still as Fleming had left it. The 2 bedrooms had metal twin beds in them and were sparse. The maid’s dog liked to sleep under the beds where it was cool (no air conditioning back then) and left behind fleas! We itched. The main house had an open living area with pleasant, but not unusual furniture, and an ample dining table. The gardens surrounding the house were beautiful, however, and the maid or gardener, the house came with both of Fleming’s original staff, would cut huge bouquets of flowers and place them on the table and a sideboard. There were no windows as such, only louvers which were always left open, and the birds would fly in to the house and visit the flowers inside. It was wonderful. The maid/cook was the one hired by Fleming and she made all our meals. What we found most amusing was that despite Fleming’s imaginative gourmet writings, his cook was actually very ordinary. She served very Jamaican food - lots of chicken and fried bananas. Fried bananas with EVERY meal. We got so sick of them that after a while they became the subject of a lot of laughter. But the real reason that Fleming built his home here was the water. There was a private beach at the bottom of a tiny stairway down a cliff. That beach was a piece of heaven. I’ll never forget it. It was pristine and the water was as clear as the air and filled with hundreds of brilliantly colored fish, all friendly and unafraid and curious. The lone rock area was loaded with them. Much further out was what Fleming must have loved most - the reef! We rented scuba equipment and my husband, who knew Jacques Cousteau, spent a lot of time out there. I’ll never forget that experience. It was like flying. We were there for about two weeks and explored every inch of Goldeneye and the surrounding island. We took side trips to Kingston and explored what we could drive to. We ate dinners out a lot to avoid the fried bananas. The Playboy hotel, not far away, had just been built, and they had a good dining room. The two trees at the front of the house are original. The stone walls were lower. We spent a lot of time outside on that patio area enjoying our cocktails and the amazing view. Golden Eye was a fabulous non-commercial and utterly private place to stay. We vacationed there, escaping from New York City in early December with another couple, and created a memory still strong and wonderful to this day half a century later.

0:55 Not going to lie, I got chills just watching you prepare yourself. What a place to experience! 🥲 1:38 Now you mention it, that's TOTALLY Ian Fleming's outfit! Right down to the long length of the shirt! 😮 4:20 OMG I'm loving how vividly you're bringing Fleming's writing time to life. And, as a writer, I can agree that people are a distraction we can do without! 🤣 4:40 Was the pool there in Fleming's time? I kind of imagine him as the type of chap who'd rather swim in the ocean than a pool out of that stiff-upper-lip-ness. 5:30 OMG I've seen some beautiful beaches in my time, but that is PERFECTION. 😵 6:00 What you said right here is such a beautiful way to protect Fleming's legacy. People focus on his perceived sins of sexism or racism or whatever (yawn) but you're celebrating the defence of nature he embraced decades before it was politically correct. 8:00 Omg you got to sit on his chair! I want to do that one day! 10:00 This is it very typically colonial British home. I could be looking at pictures of my parents house in Africa, or even my grandparents house in India. They were all designed with those big, open windows and the single storey. It's so amazing to see how Fleming lived that same particular aesthetic that is so familiar to me. I love seeing this!! 🙀 12:40 "Curtains? Absolutely not!" God, you make him sound just like my father! 🤣 13:30 Omg I remember you doing the Bond book club about Dr. No live from Goldeneye!! 😮 16:40 The sound of those crickets is insane! 🤗 What a wonderful video, David! Thank you so much for making it!

What a beautiful job you did on this video! You completely transported me out of my Central Jersey Saturday morning to a place that - to Bond fans around the world - is truly one of the most important places in the World. And you really treated it with all the respect and reference it deserves. Think about it - all of the great enjoyment and pleasure Flemings creation has given to millions and millions of people around the entire planet was created right THERE. Where you were sitting and strolling around. WOW. Thank you David - Its very unlikely I will ever get there in real life... (lol!) But for a little while this morning ... I really felt like I was there visiting this wonderful place that was the actual birthplace of the creation of our favorite fictional character of all time. And I bet everyone who viewed this felt the exact same way. Tremendous job!!

British author Ian Fleming's villa Goldeneye... for some a bleak overmasculine bachelor barrack, for others a real paradise retreat at the northern shores of Jamaica ! In fact the house and furniture were built according to Fleming's input and directions... and then there were all the naval references, as Commander Fleming idolised Horatio Nelson. February 17, 1952 Ian Fleming started type writing "Casino Royale", starting a writing routine for 14 books, which finally payed for the good life at Goldeneye ( RIP Ian Fleming ) !

@@michaelpoplawski2998 Admiral Nelson's naval career brought him to the Baltic, Meditearranean, crossing the Atlantic to Jamaica & Tobago... a fascinating life ! Mr. Fleming considered the number 17 to be very lucky and chose it as his own code number when he was a master spy. I wonder if it was just a coincidence he stated writing on the 17th of the month? 1952 also adds up to 17. I remember years ago being on the computer of a large library looking to see it they had any books by him. They did not, which I thought strange. I proceeded to walk around the place seeing if any kind of book at all caught my eye. On the top shelf of one of the many many rows, I saw a book with the number 17 as part of the title. I didn't know about Mr. Fleming's connection to it at that time. 17 is my number for a thousand reasons I won't go into. The book was a biography about Ian Fleming! They didn't have any books BY him, but had one ABOUT him.

Been there many times in the late 80’s before Goldeneye was commercialized. Sat at that desk many times. My villa was down the road next to Bob Marley’s North Coast recoding studio and CB’s mother’s villa as well as Noel Cowards villa. When CB was off the island and no guests were booked, for $100 “Tip” and a bottle of Rum the caretaker would let you hang out for the day. It was very quiet and the only tourists were CB’s friends like Sting, Bono , etc. The villa was more “Spartan” as you mentioned with empathic on the simple life.
